No: 196, 7 August 2012, Press Release Regarding Declarations Made by Iranian Officials

We strongly condemn statements full of false accusations regarding our country and extremely inappropriate threats made by some Iranian officials, particularly the statement of Hasan Firuzabadi, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, that has been published on the website of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Turkey is a country that acts in line with its goals and principles in its foreign policy and has a great State tradition. Iranian officials with whom we have neighborhood relations for centuries should first and foremost know and comprehend this fact. In fact, Turkey’s principled attitude regarding the Iranian nuclear program adopted during the voting in the UN Security Council is public knowledge. While Turkey’s scrupulous attitude in its foreign policies has been known by all, the continuation of statements made by Iranian officials assuming various functions is an unacceptably irresponsible act.

On the other hand, everybody knows who is responsible internally and externally for the human tragedy caused by the regime in Syria and who is to be blamed for the consequences of the hundreds of manslaughter every day. They will surely pay the price before history and the human conscience one day.

Furthermore, we consider the kidnapping of Iranian citizens in Syria entirely from a humanitarian perspective. As a matter of fact, following the phone call made by H.E. Mr. Salehi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, to H.E. Mr. Davutoğlu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, and requesting our assistance on this issue, we are exerting every effort, with humanitarian considerations once again and as a requirement of our friendship towards the Iranian people, as we have always done so in previous cases.

H.E. Mr. Davutoğlu will also bring these matters to the attention of H.E. Mr Salihi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran, whom he will meet today.

We call upon the Iranian officials to put an end to unfounded statements targeting our country and act in a way that would suit the spirit of neighborly relations.”
