"The Turkish Defense and Aviation Industry has passed a new threshold in exports. The sector, which exports US$433 Million in December and US$3.224 Billion between January 1 and December 31, 2021, may exceed the US$4 Billion band in 2022 and push the US$5+ Billion target if it continues at this pace."

The Turkish defense industry has exported 228 products to 170 countries in several geographies within the past ten years, Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) Chairperson Ismail Demir said on Saturday.

“When we look at the point our defense industry has reached in the last 20 years, as Turkey has made progress in every field, the numbers show this fact much better,” Demir said at the Global Strategies in Defense and Aerospace Industry Conference in the Antalya province.

“While only 62 defense projects were carried out nearly 20 years ago, today this number has exceeded 750. About half of these projects have been launched in the last 5 years.”

“While defense projects with a budget of $5.5 billion were carried out, the project volume of approximately $60 billion has been reached with an increase of approximately 11 times at the point we have reached,” he added.

Saying that the defense and aerospace exports increased by 40% in the first 11 months of this year compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching $2.794 billion,” Demir said: “We expect to complete 2021 with an export of over $3 billion.”

Turkey’s defense industry has been developing in leaps and bounds in recent years with local production while the companies eye opportunities to expand their revenues with new export deals. Demir himself has recently played up the great potential of Turkey's defense industry.
The country is in the process of rolling out new defense industry products and developing already existing ones with new sophisticated systems with the number of countries interested gaining pace.

Great news, the drone industry in particular has been a great attraction.

"The Turkish Defense and Aviation Sector started 2022 very fast in terms of exports. According to the export data of TIM (Turkish Exporters Assembly) announced today, the sector exported US$306,811 million worth of defense and aerospace products in January 2022. This shows an increase of 84.2% compared to January 2021, when the export record in the field of defense was set with US$3,224 Billion. If this momentum continues, the target of US$4 Billion in 2022 will be easily exceeded.

I think there are two points that draw attention in the export data. First of all, a defense and aerospace export item amounting to US$27.844 Million was calculated for the Automotive sector in TİM data, and if we include this figure, the export figure reaches the level of US$334.665 Million. On the other hand, Burkina Faso surpassed even the USA with approximately US$66.924 Million. Apart from the ASFAT product 4 MEMATT, I think Otokar, ASELSAN and MKEK products have also started to come into service... Let's see how figures will come for Burkina Faso export in February. In October 2021, also there are 2 MEMATTs were given to TOGO."

In 2022, Turkish defense and aerospace industries will reach the export threshold of 5 billion dollars. From 2030s, annual average export of the sector will be around 10 billion dollars.

We have past 10 years of history and data to look at

as regulations and policies change and more investment is put into defence sector exports are growing

number of patent and technologies developing in defence sector from Turkey is growing

so this is a long term sustainable programme and not a 1 trip poney

if they cross $4 billion in 2022 $5 billion can be done by 2024 or even 2025

now that would make Turkey some of the biggest defence exporters in the World

Turkey will do well - they have the advantage of having built an military-industrial complex on western NATO standards through collaborations and technology transfers and now have a solid foundation to build on top of for their own intellectual property. You can see this in the tanks, SAM systems and UAV's they are manufacturing. Turkey is on the path to become an alternative to China, USA and western countries ( i dont include Russia as they still seem to be selling Soviet era junk and customers can see that now and are avoiding the Russians where possible... )
