UN report leaves Zardari as the most logical suspect in the Benazir murder case?

‘Benazir’s security in-charge was in touch with Baitullah Mehsud’

ISLAMABAD: The author of a book, “Who Assassinated Benazir Bhutto”, alleged that the security in charge of Mohtarma Shaheed Benazir Bhutto was in contact with Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Baitullah Mehsud. In an exclusive talk with a private news channel, the writer of the book, Shakeel Anjum, claimed that Benazir Bhutto’s security in charge Khalid Shahanshah was in contact with Baitullah Mehsud. Shahanshah had travelled to Waziristan several times during 2007, he added.

Officials named in UN report suspended

ISLAMABAD: Four days after the release of the UN Commission’s report on Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, the federal government went into action and suspended eight officials, including former City Police Officer (CPO) Saud Aziz, who were responsible for former prime minister’s security at the venue of her last public meeting.

Their names were also included on the Exit Control List (ECL).

These officials have been suspended and the contract of Director-General of Civil Defence Brig (retd) Javed Iqbal Cheema has been cancelled. Brig Cheema, as the spokesman for the interior ministry, was the first government official to state that Ms Bhutto had died because of injuries she sustained when she hit the lever of the escape hatch of the vehicle she was travelling in. He was serving as DG National Crisis Management Cell (MCMC), a department of the interior ministry, at that time.

However, on Sunday there was no official word about the fate of the PPP leaders identified by the UN report for having provided ‘insufficient’ security cover to Ms Bhutto. These PPP leaders include high-profile government functionaries such as Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza.

Aware perhaps of the fingers being pointed at him, Mr Mirza claimed on Sunday that he and Rehman Malik were under investigation and that he had volunteered himself for it. However, there has been no confirmation of this from the interior minister.

Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar confirmed the suspension of the eight officials and said the orders had come from the prime minister. “The action on the UN report has been started on the directives of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.”

He added that the officials’ names had been placed on the ECL.

Those who have been suspended include former Rawalpindi CPO Saud Aziz; former District Coordination Officer (DCO) Rawalpindi Irfan Elahi; Former Inspector General Police, Rawalpindi, Chaudhry Abdul Majeed; Superintendent Police Ashfaq Anwar; SP Operations Yaseen Farooq and Khurram Shahzad. The suspended officers are expected to be presented before the second Joint Investigation Team (JIT), which is investigating the murder of Ms Bhutto, in a couple of days. They are expected to testify before the JIT.

Sources within the PPP say an FIR would also be registered against former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf, the suspended officials and some PPP leaders who had been made responsible for her security by the party. The decision to take action in the light of the UN report was taken by the PPP Core Committee meeting held on Saturday. The meeting was chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari.

Some PPP leaders are willing to confirm this. For instance, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has promised action against all those responsible for Ms Bhutto’s death. “Action will be taken against all those who have been identified in the UN report including those who were in the black Mercedes,” he told a private television channel.

The UN Commission’s report says that the black Mercedes was part of the security detail as the back-up vehicle. This Mercedes was supposed to follow the vehicle of Ms Bhutto as she left Liaquat Bagh. However, the report concludes that the Mercedes left ahead of Ms Bhutto and it exited the venue a few minutes before the shooting and the blast took place, which claimed the lives of the PPP chairperson and some party workers.

According to dissident PPP leader Senator Safdar Abbasi, who was in Ms Bhutto’s vehicle, Mr Rehman Malik, Law Minister Babar Awan and Presidential Spokesman Farhatullah Babar were in the black Mercedes.

However, these are not the only PPP leaders who have been thrust into the limelight by the UN report. The commission’s findings also mention that Ms Bhutto’s then security advisor Zulfiqar Mirza and others had formed a security force —Janisaraan-i-Benazir Bhutto — comprising 5,000 volunteers who were supposed to form a human shield around her at public meetings. But, it appears, that this force was missing from Liaquat Bagh at the time of her killing.

Some security analysts believe that the UN Commission’ report has provided enough lead to initiate criminal investigations to catch the planners, abettors, financiers and killers.

Sources close to Saud Aziz say that he is ready to face justice and that he is confident that he can fight his case at any forum. According to the sources, he is claiming that he has not received any such orders.

Mr Aziz is also reported to have questioned why no action had been taken against Musharraf, who had been directly held responsible by the UN commission for the then government’s neglect of Ms Bhutto’s security.

What the hell is this crime scene washing? what possibly on road could have been found and when PPP don't trust local investigations and invited UN than why are they willing to trust inspection record of site from same authorities only if it had not been washed, little longer!
Local authorites have to do their job as they deem appropirate and SOP... they need not to consult UN before washing bomb blast site which happens to be the middle of a busy road.

IMO, the crime scene was the vehicle of BB! does any one knows, who washed the car of BB? and when? riding associates are equall suspects.

The biggest question remains why Rehman Malik barred state security cheif was barred from riding along BB?
The big question about UN report is how come they completely ignore the murder of Khalid Shahansha owing to her position of being BB's security cheif.
Why UN is reporting BB a very important personality as she had left Pakistan on her own accord with trail of corruptions.
Only, US X files can reveal what BB negotiated in US and what Zardari was doing in US?

What small minded people don't understand is that if BB was a pain in neck for Musharraf. NS was a bigger pain in neck. MMA was another pain after 2004. CJP was the biggest pain. See, he could not have bulldozed all of them. Musharraf does not benefit from anyone's murder. Remember his words, "Who is the maximum gainer' ???

Shahid Masood of GEO rightly asked in his interview with Naheed Khan and Safdar Abbasi, 'where is that Blackberry BB used?'

I ask further - Who was the last person she talked to on phone? What prompted her to stick her neck out? Why did her daughter tried to commit suicide in Dubai later on?

Regarding autopsy. Even I, through personal contacts, can request doctors to lay off autopsy, of someone close. This is Pakistan. What laws say....even the implementers won't know.

DAWN.COM | Pakistan | "Benazir's assassination spot washed on CPO's order"

LAHORE: Director General Rescue 1122 Dr Rizwan Naseer said on Tuesday that the then CPO Rawalpindi Saud Aziz had given out the order to wash the scene of Benazir Bhutto's assassination.

Dr. Naseer was addressing a news conference at the Lahore Press Club upon the completion of 500,000 operations including 200,000 accident rescue operations since the inception of Rescue 1122 in October 2004.

He said that Rescue 1122 had completed its inquiry of the sequence of events after Benazir Bhutto's killing and that Rescue 1122 was not directly responsible for the washing of the assassination spot.

If some thing is important here its the question of "Who killed Benazir ?"

Every thing else about What if ,Why ,How etc are all secondary.

and its obvious...Mr. 10% gained everything! (sympathy)
wat can we say, our people r stupid enough to fall for tricks from our corrupt politicians...

well i don't know too much about pak politics, but few days ago fatima bhutto was in india,i saw the interview, she was saying she didnt want zardari to be presd.
is the only reason was his father killing or BB assassination

Reality is that someone has killed her through a criminal conspiracy.

Repeating "It was her fault" ad-nauseam seems to be favorite way to escape from this reality for the lotus eaters of her country.

But iam sure the tens of millions of people in pak to whom her life mattered are actually wide awake and looking for answers.

dude what you do is install security doors n perform a security check... dont install one install 50... install 100 it was still worth her life... wasnt it???

so its not the responsibility of the state to provide protection?

well i think they did, because nothing happened till she was giving a speech but when she hit the road than it happened....
and u kno that there were thousands of people around her car....so i dont kno how can one perform security checks overthere..

Not exposing yourself to public was not even an option for a leader of Benazir's magnitude. She was leading an election campaign for her party that was out of power since 11 long years and were getting very little opportunity to multiply their wealth from the money of the tax payers and then spend on their election campaigns.
Benazir did not commit suicide, she was murdered and it is the responsibility of the state to safe guard every citizens life and wealth, so the primary responsibility falls in the hands of the then government machinery.
But in Benazirs case the inner most security circle was the responsibility of PPP lead by Rehman Malik who ran away from the scene taking her decoy or backup vehicle and the protocol provided by the state.
Here are a few points.

Head of Protocol ran away and became the Interior Minister.
Chief protocol officer (khalid Shehshah) who was acting funny on the stage was shot few days later.
Postmortem was not conducted.
Crime scene was washed away along with all the evidence, on the orders of CP Rawalpindi Saud Aziz
Benazir's dupatta went missing.
Her Blackberry is gone.
Her will has basic grammatical mistakes (oxford graduate)
Her son tried to commit suicide in dubai.

Husband becomes the President of the country.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out what exactly happened.

But when we have accepted Zardari as the President of Pakistan, nothing else should come as a surprise to us.:pakistan:
