Look awfully like the GDP ranking of nations in 1980, so what is your point.

Need to know what they mean by 'university'. India has more elite standalone 'institutions' than universities and many of them don't give out 'degrees'. IITs (only engineering), IISc (Only Science), AIIMS (Only Medicine), IIMs (only managament)- so they aren't affiliated to universities but qualitywise are waaaaaayyyyyyyyy up there. Hell a PGDBM from IIM A can get you a strait job in McKinsey but an MBA from one of our 'universities' will be down in the dumps. But ya, India still has a long way to go in terms of higher education.

Academic Ranking of World Universities
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaJump to: navigation, search
The Academic Ranking of World Universities is compiled by Shanghai Jiaotong University.[1] It is one of the two most prominent world university rankings, along with the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.[2][3] The ranking compared 1200 higher education institutions worldwide according to a formula that took into account alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (10 percent), staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals (20 percent), highly-cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories (20 percent), articles published in Nature and Science (20 percent), the Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index (20 percent) and the per capita academic performance (on the indicators above) of an institution (10 percent). The methodology is set out in an academic article by its originators, N.C. Liu and Y. Cheng.[4] Liu and Cheng explain that the original purpose of doing the ranking was "to find out the gap between Chinese universities and world-class universities, particularly in terms of academic or research performance."[5] The rankings have been conducted since 2003 and then updated annually.

No point I am just interested in peoples opinions and conclusions.

Why you listed ROK there?

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Since you are trying to prove your point of communism is bad for education, you know South Korea is not DPRK, right??

Criticism

College and university rankings often stimulate controversy (see Criticism of college and university rankings (North America) and Criticism of college and university rankings (2007 United States)) and the ARWU is no exception. A 2007 paper published in the journal Scientometrics found that the results from the Shanghai rankings could not be reproduced from raw data using the method described by Liu and Cheng.[17]

In a report from April 2009, J-C. Billaut, D. Bouyssou and Ph. Vincke analyze how the ARWU works, using their insights as specialists of Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM). Their main conclusions are that the criteria that are used are not relevant, that the aggregation methodology is plagued by a number of major problems and that the whole exercise suffers from an insufficient attention paid to fundamental structuring issues.[18]

The ARWU researchers themselves, N.C Liu and Y Cheng,[5] think that the quality of universities cannot be precisely measured by mere numbers and any ranking can be controversial. They suggest that university and college rankings should be used with caution and their methodologies must be understood clearly before reporting or using the results.

You know that actually makes sense. And I'm actually gonna tell you something funny...for Indians colleges are places where you go to study:smitten:...N I MEAN IT LITERALLY. So the fact that they haven't been path breakers in many fields isn't very important for us.
Point is that the brutal competition required to get through these places (200,000 applicants for IITs Vs some 2000 selected, some 150,000 applicants for IIMs Vs some 1500 selected) usually is higher than that of even Harvard or Stanford. So by getting through them is very prestigious.
You'll be suprised to know the number of people who've left MIT/Yale/Princeton and joined IIT/IIMA etc....happens every year. So they take the best of the pack in tems of merit and give them a first class education. Oly now are they begniing to look at using cutting edge research to contribute to the academic community.

Watch This....a CBS 60 Mins feature o IITs

there is a simple explanation for this, american universities are 100+ years older and much better funded.

they'll always be 100 years older than the asian ones but the funding advantage over asia will go away with time.

Are you sure thats the only reason?

well done america, 168 uni is a great number. it would be great if you could also give the number of unis per capita in these countries.

As much as I love pulling the leg of some of these Chinese and Indian kids in this chat room. I firmly belive the worlds only hope is that countries like China, Indian and Middle East become economically and intellectually strong. Can you imagine what the world would be like if China, India and the Middle East had been able to match the west in discoveries, inventions and knowledge for the last century. For ever invention or discovery that has come out of those countries in the last century a 1000 has come from the west.

You (again) admit that you are trolling this forum.

What is your purpose in trolling this forum... and in laughing at the dead Chinese civilians who died during the Cultural revolution?

If your intention is to make the USA look as bad as possible, it worked. George Bush couldn't have done a better job at turning people against the USA.
