The USS Chung-Hoon sailed though the Taiwan Strait.(Twitter: @US7thFleet)

A US warship has sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait, as part of what the US military calls routine activity, but which has riled China.

Key points:

  • The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Chung-Hoon carried out the transit
  • China's embassy in Washington urged the US to "immediately stop provoking troubles"
  • Its Chinese People's Liberation Army says it organised troops to monitor and guard the ship's transit

In recent years, US warships — and, on occasion, those from allied nations such as Britain and Canada — have sailed through the Taiwan Strait, drawing the ire of China, which claims Taiwan, against the objections of its democratically elected government.

In a statement, the US military said the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Chung-Hoon carried out the transit.

"Chung-Hoon's transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the United States' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific," the statement added.

In a separate statement, Liu Pengyu — the spokesman for China's embassy in Washington — said China firmly opposed the move and urged the United States to "immediately stop provoking troubles, escalating tensions and undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait".

"US warships frequently flex muscles in the name of exercising freedom of navigation. This is not about keeping the region free and open," the statement said.

"China will continue to stay on high alert and is ready to respond to all threats and provocations at any time, and will resolutely safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity."

A spokesman for the Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army said it had organised troops to monitor and guard the ship's transit, and "all movements were under control".

Taiwan's Defence Ministry said the ship sailed in a northerly direction through the strait, that its forces had monitored its passage and observed nothing out of the ordinary.

The narrow Taiwan Strait has been a frequent source of military tension since the defeated Republic of China government fled to Taiwan in 1949, after losing a civil war with the communists, who established the People's Republic of China.

While the US has no formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it is bound by law to provide the island with the means to defend itself.

China has never ruled out using force to bring Taiwan under its control.

Taiwan vows to defend itself if attacked, saying Beijing's sovereignty claims are void as the People's Republic of China has never governed the island.

A Chinese military plane came within 6 metres of a US air force aircraft in the contested South China Sea last month and forced it to take evasive manoeuvres to avoid a collision in international airspace.

The close encounter followed what the US has called a recent trend of increasingly dangerous behaviour by Chinese military aircraft.

The CCP is always angry and crying for the last 70 years, their feelings always get hurt, but they never do anything about it. Taiwan has proven to be stronger than the CCP.

usa carrier in SCS is slightly better, but still is a kamikaze mission like sailling across the TW straits just like running naked in front of ur opponent's house to 'embarrass' him. lol
The main purpose is just to please the kids back home.

Just show of force. In a war its a different story. It be like sending an Ohio class ballistic missile sub near Iran when they didn't really need to.

Yes, the keyword is 'show'. The kids will enjoy it while the pros will too, seeing it as a comedy.
The fact that usa responded this way is more significant than the show itself.
And yes, it's different in a war, or anything close to one, like when PLA blockaded TW earlier, u won't see usa ships near these areas.

They constantly do it with an specific period for one purpose, and its not other than "seperation" process. These routine flights into Taiwan, passing through the Strait actually inflicts political damage on Chinese hegemony in the area. Goal is giving Taiwan independence from PRC as a symbolic show of Taiwanese seperation process.

From military view, yes it is not a significant development. A destroyer that could be sunken in a matter of minutes by Chinese coastal defense forces. But politically it is a huge damage. It would be like China constantly sending a warship to pass through bay of pigs while trying to arm and to give independence to puerto rico from Washington.

Perhaps because the US is a responsible country that you didn't see them in battle formation off Taiwan?
