DAWN.COM | Pakistan | Waziristan operation nearing end: Gilani

LAHORE: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said that now that the military operation in South Waziristan is nearing conclusion, the government is considering a new military operation in Orakzai Agency.

Gilani was speaking to the media after attending the Government College University's annual convocation in Lahore, on Saturday.

The Prime Minister said that evidence of Indian involvement in terrorist activities is limited to the Balochistan province. He added that if new evidence of involvement in other areas is found then the government will take up the matter with India. Commenting on the movement of American nationals in Pakistan, the Prime Minister said that no one is above the law.

Gilani also said that measures to build the capacity of law enforcement agencies will be instituted nationwide.

Orakzai Agency has long been the main base of Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud.

The military still issues daily reports of its battlefield actions in South Waziristan, but it is clear the activity has slowed down.

Many militants in South Waziristan are believed to have gone to Orakzai.

I think this is a premature announcemonet by Gilani - there's still chances for more major battles to take place in Waziristan
