I have looked at the MMRCA from every angle. IMO

Capability
Current & future IAF fighter mix
Politicalgain/loss
Original MMRCA requirement
Future threat
Mix of PLAAF & PAF fleet today and the next decade
Cost of maintenance
Cost of purchase
Ease of induction

To me this baby just ticks all the boxes.

Saab JAS 39 Gripen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The gripen will come to india with a new Raven Aesa Radar this was paramount for IAF.

Full 100% TOT with Saab willing to move the entire production line to india.

Can use both european & American weapons including both Amraam & Meteore.

Will cost 40% less than Rafael or Typhoon.

No End User agreements and add on baggage that American euipment demands.

IAF could induct 126 4.5 generation fighters for under $8 billion

Why spend $13 billion on the same thing only more load and more mainteanance and stil use same weapons ie Rafale or Typhoon.

True, LCA is just a platform which we can make to the Gripen IN standard.

E lta is coming to come up with AESA of their EL/M 20 82 radar, we can integrate it.

What if US engines/others equipements on Gripen got an embargo?

Also the range and weapon load is also different in both planes. I think a twin engined plane have more range, combat radious and can carry more weapons.

But my reason goes beyond this.

IAF will already have 330 twin engined fighters ie SU30MKI & mig29smt.

The cost to maintain equip and fly these will seriously cost the IAF annually.

I don,t think the IAF can afford to have 500 of its 600 combat fleet twin engined.

The best most efficient air forces in the world are going 50/50 or less

Israel 75/25 ie F16/F35/F15
plaaf 50/50 ieSU30SU27/SU11/J8 V J10/FC1
usa 60/40 ie F35 F16 V F22/F15S
France 50/50 MIRAGE2000/RAFALE
RAF F35/gr9 harriers/ Typhoon.

For india just imagiine a 60/40

SU30MKI/MIG29SMT V GRIPEN NG & LCA1 LCAMK2 MIRAGE2000-5

IMO

IAF will face single engine FC20 /J10 from PLAAF and F16/52 & Thunder from PAF.

For these planes surely a small efficient fleet of highly advanced GRIPEN NG with aesa radar and the best BVR in the world in meteore makes sense.

IAF has its heavey punch long range fighter in SU30MKI

WHY ANOTHER...

Remember if the IAF is inefficient and too costly to maintain both the Navy and the Army will suffer with cost too as a spin off.

India needs to be smarter

What else will SAAB bring.

Loads guys

The swedes are highly efficient aero space power with 4 decades of experience. Very independant and techincal strong.

They have offered to join INDIA IN THE AMCA programme.

Again no fear of SANCTIONS ie USA or cost double hicks like Russia on Gorskhov.

Just a highly efficent partnership for a fifth gen fighter by 2025.

To me it just makes sense

Finally for those worried by effect on LCA the gripen will act as a stop gap and a back up the the TEJAS programme.

Stop gap until mk2 comes in 2017 the gripen can start by 2012 to give IAF the quality low cost MMRCA that it badley needs. It can fill the gap between 2012-2018

Supplement after 2018 IMAGINE a fleet of 126 Gripens with meteore and Raven Aesa and 120 tejas mk1 & mk2 sharing the same american GE414 engine and some if not all of the weapons.

To me a IAF fleet of

272 su30mki

126 gripen ng

120 tejas mk1 & mk2

Just makes economic & operational sense.

Gripen NG can handle any single engined fighter in the world injcluding both F16/52 and FC20.

What abt LCA? we can make it to the Gripen standard, from 2016 onwards we can get LCA MK-2 with AESA and other advanced stuff, so Y this fuss?

Totally agree with Storm Force...We need cheap solution...These birds with LCA will make a nice Mid-Low combination..

We will make Tejas to Gripen standard in few years.
Gripen will cost us $40 million each.
Tejas will cost us $21 million each.
So why spend money on a fighter which will be comparable to our Tejas?
We should buy Rafale/Typhoon and add Tejas for supplementary.
That means we will spend more money now for Rafale/Typhoon and can have Tejas more in numbers(which is up to Gripen standard)

The decision would go in Yankees favor - Nothing else than Super hornet will win the contest.
