Work on BrahMos supersonic missile (air and under water version) over, trials to wait

BrahMos Aerospace, an Indo-Russian joint venture, has completed the work on aerial and underwater versions of a supersonic cruise missile, but the test-fire of the two variants is held up for the time being in the absence of platforms for trials. The test-fire of underwater version of the missile will take place early next year while the trial of air-borne variant is likely to be held in 2012, BrahMos Aerospace said.
Alexander Leonov, Director General of NPO Mashinostroyenia which is the Russian partner of the joint venture, said work on both aerial and submarine versions of the missile has been completed and they are ready for trial.

He said BrahMos scientists are now waiting for the Su-30MKI aircraft to be provided by Indian Air Force to act as a platform for testing the aerial version while a specially designed submerged vehicle will be used for trial of the submarine version.

In the absence of a specially designed submarine to conduct the test, a submerged platform will be used for carrying out the trial of underwater version of the missile.

Marketing Director of Brahmos Praveen Pathak said IAF has already identified two Sukhoi 30 fighter jets for testing the aerial version, which is set to take place in 2012. He said induction of the missile into the IAF is likely to begin in 2013.

"As per our estimate, we will be able to complete by end of 2012 all the development trials of airbrone version and induction should start by 2013," Pathak told PTI.

Leonov said Indian Navy only wants to integrate the missile on Indian manufactured submarines, which is why test has to be carried out from a specially designed submerged vehicle.

"As far as I know the submarines where the missiles are likely to be integrated will be manufactured in India. The missile is ready for installations

Does this mean. P-75A will also not able to fire Brahmos..?

My guess is it will be testfired from arihant next year...

300 kms underwater version does make much sense when we can go for 700 kms Shaurya missile. Why should our submarines go close to the enemy to fire the Brahmos when it can safely fir the Shaurya from 700 kms away ?

I would like DRDO to develop a submarine version of 1000 kms Nirbhay instead.

1000 km range cruise missile will be a very good option.

May be Drdo developing this under water version of bramhos for attacking warships !!!! :D

But i don't know is it possible to attack a warship from a sub with cruise missile..:undecided:

This will be basically an An-Sh version..To destroy the enemy's high valued ships..For ground targets we will have 1000 km range missiles.

I am not sure if I understand what you say.

How can we destroy "ships" with an Submarine launched Brahmos ?

The main Brahmos is primarily an anti-ship missile. The air launched version makes sense as it can be fired deep into enemy territory by our Sukhois but the submarine version with 300 kms hardly makes any sense atleast when Shaurya is there.

Absolutely, submarines launched missiles are not used for anti ship purposes. their only purpose is to go after land based high value targets.

This seems to be the case. There is a submarine launched variant of the Harpoon (UGM-84A) which has a similar role. Obviously undersea launched version of the Brahmos would be similar.

This would definitely widen the strategic options available to the Navy greatly. Instead of sending an aircraft/ship within 300 kms of the enemy target, they can now send a sub. For the enemy, the difficultly in detecting a sub that far away from their naval group is virtually astronomical.

Thats the point, why send a sub within 300 kms of enemy territory when we can fire a Shaurya from 700 kms away ?

I know submarines are hard to detect but still there is a risk of our subs running into Pakistan's anti-submarine capabilities.

Why the needless risk ?

Nirbhay is a sub sonic Missile, Its 1000km, but DRDO has successfully Tested 3500Km ranged K-4 SLBM.... We need supersonic and Hypersonic SLCM

I don't believe the Shaurya has Anti-Ship Capability. I was just talking in the context of Anti-Ship role of the subs.

MOSCOW (PTI): BrahMos Aerospace, an Indo-Russian joint venture, has completed the work on aerial and underwater versions of a supersonic cruise missile, but the test-fire of the two variants is held up for the time being in the absence of platforms for trials.

The test-fire of underwater version of the missile will take place early next year while the trial of air-borne variant is likely to be held in 2012, BrahMos Aerospace said.

"As far as I know the submarines where the missiles are likely to be integrated will be manufactured in India. The missile is ready for installations," he said.

The 290-km range missile, which can carry a conventional warhead of up to 300 kg, is already in service with the Navy as its Shivalik class frigates have been equipped with it.

BrahMos has also been inducted into the Army. The missile can fly at 2.8 times the speed of sound.

One regiment of the BrahMos I variant, consists of 67 missiles, five mobile autonomous launchers on 12x12 'Tatra' vehicles and two mobile command posts, among other equipment, is already operational in the Army.

India and Russia have so far invested 300 million dollars in BrahMos Aerospace, which was established to design, develop, produce and market the missile by using the technological skills and capabilities of both countries.

Pathak said several countries have shown interest in buying the missile and negotiations are currently underway with them.

"We have got applications from various countries.

Negotiations are currently going on with them," he said.

Lenov said BrahMos Aerospace is also planning to develop a hypersonic version of the missile to be called BrahMos-II which may have speed in the range of 5 to 7 Mach to make it the fastest cruise missile in the world.

"The combination of (India's) requirement and achievable level of speed will determine the future configuration," he said.

Under water version of Brahmos with 300 km range this is not actually what Indian Navy wants but they have no option in class of missile.
The most important thing in this is that DRDO can learn a lot in co-development process how to make underwater cruise missile and then they may can make a similar missile with 500 to 700 km range in future.
