@fatman sir, Thanks for this information ...

Its bit strange that there is no Bofors (155mm) in service, and no info about Smerch MBRL?

I may be wrong but it seems bit out dated.

The list shows 410 nos delivered to IA but interesting that the current status is not available. Many of the Howitzers were cannibalized for lack of spares, I just hope that the new tender gets finalised immediately after the elections.

410 - 100 = 310 in service. since the 100 cannibilized is a estimate, therefore exact numbers in service are not available. countries sometimes dont provide complete details and therefore some estimates need to be made.JMHO.:enjoy:

It's not possibel that all of gun laying in junk yard due to lack of spares. some of the non functioning units can be stripped and used as spare parts for others.

Nos some between 300~400 seems realistics.

What about Smerch MBRL and Pinaka - some website claimes Inda have 20~50 units in service?

In 2006 IA had palced order for 40 nos. each of Pinaka MBRL, on TATA Power and Larsen & Toubro. Deliveries were supposed to commence from 2007. In my opinion the orders would have been completed by now.

Indian Army to celebrate 71st Armour Day

New Delhi, Apr 30 (ANI): The Indian Army would celebrate 71st Armour Day tomorrow to honour the arrival of mechanism in the Indian cavalry regiments.

Armour Day is celebrated each year on May 1. On this day in 1938, the Scindia Horse became the first regiment to convert to tanks.

The first equipments they adapted were Vickers light tanks and Chevrolet armoured cars.

With the passage of time, the Indian Army became better equipped. In 1943, the Indian Armour updated itself to the Sherman tanks (M4) of American origin.

This transformation in the army was initiated post independence with the coming in of the Centurions Mark 7 and AMX-13 light tanks.

Since then, the Armoured Corps has operated the indigenous Vijayanta tank, the Russian T-54 and T-55 tanks and the T-72 main battle tank, which has been the workhorse of the corps for the past three decades.

The combination of forces and modern machines resulted in a first-rated performance in the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war. With the help of machinery, the forces were successful in destroying the sophisticated Pakistani Patton tanks to form the famous graveyard, "Patton Nagar" near Khemkaran in Punjab.

The show of action was so magnificent that Lt Col AB Tarapore was posthumously honoured with the Param Vir Chakra for his valiant action against the Pakistanis in the Shakargarh bulge.

In 1971, the Corps had a proud victory again. Tanks were at the forefront of action in the Western and Eastern fronts fighting the Pakistan forces.

2nd Lt. Arun Khetarpal fought gallantly and sacrificed himself in the battle of Basantar River earning his regiment, the Poona Horse, yet another Param Vir Chakra.

The mechanized forces have time and again shown their supremacy and achieving the desired strategic plans.

The Corps are still in the constant process of modernization. The authorities are renewing the existing task forces to bring them at par with the best. (ANI)

Chinese activity prompts Indian infrastructure plans

Rahul Bedi JDW Correspondent - New Delhi

The biannual Indian army commanders' conference in New Delhi has deliberated extensively on infrastructural development along India's 5,045 km frontier with China in response to similarly heightened activity on the other side.

A strategic requirement for "heightened connectivity" of India's mountainous Ladakh region with the rest of the country via an all-weather road and an ambitious rail link were among the major areas of discussion at the conference, which ended on 24 April.

The proposed transportation network includes 72 roads, three airstrips and numerous bridges along the undefined line of actual control (LoAC). It would enable India's military swiftly to deploy its forces to the region and sustain them logistically, army officers said. Many of these projects in north-eastern India are also being developed as a reaction to the increased Chinese presence in neighbouring Myanmar.

Army units that have been deployed along the LoAC ever since the 1962 war with China remain exclusively dependent on animal transport and airdrops for supplies. China continues to dispute more than 120,600 km 2 of territory with India.

There has been little or no indication of an early resolution of these conflicting claims, despite continuing negotiations and the recent upswing in diplomatic, political, commercial and even military ties between the world's two most populous countries.

The People's Liberation Army is better served not only by all-weather roads on the Chinese side of the LoAC but also by a railway to Tibet, as well as links to the region via the Karakoram highway in neighbouring Pakistan, which runs close to India's northern border.

The army commanders' conference discussed plans for the quasi-military Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to speedily construct an all-weather road and a 498 km railway line to the Ladakh region's main town of Leh. This would overcome the annual problem of closing off the crucial crossing during heavy snow and would involve building a tunnel through the 16,000 ft-high Bara-lacha Pass.

Indian Rail is believed to be finalising the feasibility report on constructing this line, which would cost around INR220 billion (USD4.4 billion) and would carry 6,000 passengers daily.

Indian army marks 25th anniversary of taking world highest battlefield in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, April 14 (Xinhua) – Indian Army Monday marked 25th anniversary of taking Siachen glacier, the world's highest battleground in India-controlled Kashmir, said an Indian defense ministry statement.

A ceremony was organized by the Indian army Monday to mark the anniversary at the base camp in Siachen, said the statement.

"On 13 April 1984, troops of Northern Command launched Operation Meghdoot to prevent Pakistan army from clandestinely occupying the glaciated Siachen," said the statement. "The strategic passes of Bilafond La and Sia La were occupied by our troops braving the inhospitable weather and terrain."

Siachen is referred to as the highest, coldest and perhaps the most unforgiving battlefield.

Top Indian army and Indian Air Force officers attended the silver jubilee celebrations and laid floral wreaths at the Siachen war memorial on the occasion, according to the statement.

India also initiated a process to open the glacier for 20-day civilian trekking expedition in 2007.

However, Pakistan and separatist leaders in India-controlled Kashmir protested the move and urged international community to stop India from using disputed region for such pursuits, resulting in a diplomatic row between New Delhi and Islamabad.
