Xiaomi tops Bangladesh smartphone market for first time ever in Q2​

It captured the top spot for the first time with a share of 28.8% and 134% YoY growth

Bangladesh’s smartphone market shipments declined 3% YoY in Q2 2022, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Monitor Service.

The market declined due to soaring inflation and rising commodity prices, which resulted in a weakened consumer purchasing power for electronics, reads a press release.
However, Bangladesh performed well as one of the most stable economies in South Asia.

Commenting on the brands in the market, Senior Analyst Karn Chauhan said: “In Q2 2022, Xiaomi captured the top spot for the first time in Bangladesh’s smartphone market with a share of 28.8% and 134% YoY growth. Xiaomi’s growing offline presence, well-developed local manufacturing facility and a wide entry-level portfolio with features like larger display size, huge battery capacity and the improved camera helped it to reach the top spot. Eid festivities also helped Xiaomi drive significant volumes. Going forward, the brand will continue to focus on offline expansion and adding more features to the entry-level segment.”

“Samsung’s newly added budget smartphones and their steady performance in the entry- and mid-price levels took the brand to the second spot with a 17.3% market share and 65% YoY growth. Samsung’s active promotions and marketing helped it remain in the top three despite falling from its first position in Q1 2022. Vivo took third place with a 10.1% share driven by its strong omnichannel presence and ability to target a range of entry- and mid-level price bands,” he added.

Commenting on the market dynamics, Chauhan said: “Bangladesh’s smartphone market experienced a good start with Eid celebrations during April. The month contributed almost half of the quarter’s total shipment volumes. However, the volumes declined adversely in May and June due to smartphone costs rising by up to 10% on increasing component prices and the addition of VAT. OEMs are expected to increase smartphone prices by up to another 20% in the coming months.”

Report is about smart phones....not all phones...in BD only a small section of the people buy smart phones..

Samsung ,Symphony, Xiaomi phones are all assembled in BD as I understand, probably the rest also.

Not sure why Walton is suddenly missing.... news article from earlier in the year from same source.

This report is about "shipments", i.e. imports of branded phones, not total sales.

So Walton is into Feature phones? I thought very highly of Walton.
 
People purchase Xiaomi because of it provides bang for the buck and huge after market custom operating system community. Bangladeshi brands rule low end segment of the market...
 
What's the name of the UK made mobile phone brand? Rolls Royce cell phone?
UK does not have UK made phone as such, there are phones that are assembled here.

However UK have these:

- ARM chips- 95% of all smart phones globally has these or has chips based on ARM design. UK gets revenue from almost every mobile phones sold anywhere.

- Apple technical design bureau is based in US and UK only.

- The same is for Google.

The mobile technology as well as internet has been developed in UK and it leads on R&D. UK is the brain and a market maker. It does not produce much of the physical products in country - this I think should change.

However, UK is making 100s of billions per year from this sector because effectively the technology is developed by us.

U.K. is a post industrial economy.

For such a small country it’s not possible to straddle the knowledge economy and manufacturing economy.

U.K. and USA lead the world in innovation. They dominate the top 10 university rankings.

In terms of knowledge base, ranking go something like this..

1. U.K. / USA

2. Germany / France / Holland

Big gap then

3. Japan / China / South Korea
 
Xiaomi started producing it’s first “Made in Bangladesh” smartphones in December 2021 with the Redmi 9A model, sold at a promotional price of around $100.

XIAOMI brand has a very strong marketing campaign in place in Bangladesh for their locally assembled cellphones which started in Q1 of this year (discounts up to $40 and a free T-shirt with every purchase). Which accounts for the large market share. However it remains to be seen whether Xiaomi can sustain this.

Imported Mi phones do not have this facility and moreover attract tariff penalty for fully assembled imported phones, unless smuggled from India (which I seriously doubt).

Walton's margin got hit because they use some pricey imported components (SoC, Camera and cellphone SMD components) so their pricing is under pressure.

But high parts prices will not last forever - market will take care of it. Similarly Xiaomi local assembler cannot keep up discounts forever. Cellphone brands in Bangladesh are always in flux marketshare-wise. New models come online all the time with new innovations and features.

Here are some of Walton's recent cellphone models below. Although they may not be as advanced as some of the Chinese brands feature-wise, they are really not that far behind. I'd argue they are quality wise a lot better than some of the smaller Indian brands like Karbonn etc. (yes even featurephones for middle and lower middle class folks).

We have to remember, Walton has its sights set on much bigger things than cellphones. For example recent Zanussi and Italian appliance brand-name and factory purchase etc. just to name one example. I know a. lot which I cannot disclose right now. They are going to be much bigger than just an OEM mfr.
