Cloudy skies actually balance out the light and prevent harsh shadows.

Did you or the camera choose these settings?

I did. None of these were shot at Auto. Tried taking picture at different settings. Wasted the first day actually (these pictures are from first day though)

A good way to learn is to take a photo in Auto mode without flash and see what settings the camera chooses, and then go from there according to the type of photo that you want to take.
