What's new

F-22s are corroding, need costly fix

when you have ferraris you also need to have separate road for them simple as that.

I owned a 348 for 3 years... I paid about $2000 on some brake parts and a good service and that was it.
I own a bmw for 2 years and I have paid about $5000 so far on various little things going wrong here and there.. so ......

You're the only person I know who finds a German car to be less reliable than a Ferrari.

One of my friends who owned a Ferrari in California reckoned it cost him $1/mile in upkeep (parking, service, registration, insurance -- everything except gas). An average Japanese economy car costs around 5c/mile.

RAM or radar absorbent material contained ferrite, minute iron balls (in paint) that is more prompt to oxidise, F-117, B-2 and F-22 are thus heavy on oxidation prevention maintenance compare with non-stealth aircraft. Until new type of RAM is used, they will remain very costly to maintain.

May be a thick sun tan lotion will help.:lol:

Source for this, please. Then I will determine the degree of debunking. :D

I had it insured as a classic/weekend car with a mileage limit per year.
for the three years i used it, it was not very fuel efficient but it was reliable and trouble free. Obviously I got it second hand, so I had to replace brake discs and two calipers + a good overall service.

The BMW i got is a M3, the insurance is a rip off, the engine is full of troubles, the SMG is shot to bits every 10000 miles, various electronic bits in the car light up all the time, I had to change the fuel pump, the brake lines got corroded, the MAF and catalyst went.. too much to mention really ... .
No i don't think a Ferrari is more reliable than a german car, I am just saying that just because you expect one not to be, it doesn't make it so

That is utter nonsense, so does metallic paint in cars and boats, that doesn't make them rust more.

besides, there isn't a military on this planet that doesn't combat rust in its equipment...

Who said other combat planes don't rust ? We spent hours inspecting planes to make sure we are trouble free and making minor repairs and replacements here and there.. F16s, M2000s, F1s,F5s they all had their little troubles here and there... it is natural ...

The raptor line may be opened again now that the GOP is in power in the house...rust or no rust.

Why do you think the 'evil Chinese' mantra is being hyped up?

The hype over terrorism doesn't do much to sustain the military-industrial complex.

I wanted to add that the first flight of the Jxx would help the GOP immensely!!

Can the expert here vividly describe what exactly happens to F-22 ?

Can the expert here vividly describe what exactly happens to F-22 ?

what happens is that some of the aluminium skin panels (i.e. some of the bits that make up the skin of the plane) and some bits of the substructure i.e. the skeleton the panels attach to), have some rust on them.

it is probably because of the way they were manufactured and treated with the RAM coatings. Although it is probably (but not certain) a side effect of the new RAM coatings + paint, this is not the first time something like this happens on planes ships and vehicles.
LM said it has a way of minimising this.. i believe them.

it is rust for the name of God, it is not the end of the world.

Should nt military planes be made from rust free material... Like stainless steel or something... I m no expert so you can laugh if you find my comment funny...

Planes are made from a plethora of materials.

stainless steel, titanium, aluminium, composites etc.

hence in some points all around, some rust may develop, it's no big thing really

No different than how China hype up the 'evil Americans'.

The hype over terrorism doesn't do much to sustain the military-industrial complex.
But Osama bin Laden and the imams who hype up the 'Christian crusaders' terrorism are doing quite well to sustain a constant supply of jihadists, no?

"Teething" problems in my view. In a multi-billion dollar project, $300M is small change to fix a problem discovered after attaining full operational capability.
