Sachin Tendulkar - myth or man?

To us he is no more a person
Now but a whole climate of opinion
Under whom we conduct our different lives."
W H Auden, from his elegy to Sigmund Freud

In India, Sachin Tendulkar ceased being a person long ago. To a small group of friends and colleagues, he is human with all the frailties that implies. But to the vast majority he is merely a figure on television, indistinguishable from characters such as Superman and Batman.

The illusion is strengthened by the number of occasions he arrives when the team is in trouble and takes them to safety, whipping out his killer straight drive and unstoppable cover drive to deal with the enemy's vicious outswingers or off breaks.

When he does well his fans discover that life has meaning after all; when he fails occasionally they feel suicidal. Then he scores again and the wheel is set in motion once more. The cycle of birth and rebirth is never seen more clearly and more often than on the cricket fields of India.

Auden's lines say it well. Being a non-person means that your ambitions are not your own. Others decide how many runs you should make before you retire. It is always the next milestone that is important.

On the eve of the World Cup final, the ambitions have crystallised. All Tendulkar's fans ask for is that India win the title, and that Tendulkar himself scores his 100th international century.

Where Tendulkar is concerned, it is not a case of whether he is great, but how great

Currently he has 51 centuries in Tests and 48 in one-day internationals. The next best combined aggregate is former Australia captain Ricky Ponting's 69. The adjective 'Bradmanesque' will have to be replaced by 'Tendulkarine' for the next generation.

In two decades, Tendulkar has been both symbol of a resurgent India, the coming powerhouse, and one of the first sportsmen to benefit from the changed economic climate.

Asked on his first tour of England in 1990 whether he found the endorsements a distraction, the 17-year-old replied: "I am aware it is the cricket that is bringing me these opportunities. If I neglect that, the other will slip away."

Now, a few weeks short of his 38th birthday, as he prepares for his second final (after 2003) in his sixth World Cup, it is easy to imagine that even his rivals will be hoping he gets a century. For Tendulkar is that rare sportsman, one who is worshipped beyond boundaries as much for what he brings to the game as a batsman as for his demeanour as a person.

Sachin Tendulkar
Like Alexander the Great, he has no more worlds to conquer

"When fans call you 'God'," said the Sri Lankan great Muthiah Muralitharan, "it is difficult not to believe it yourself, but Sachin is the most grounded person I know."

The campaign to award the nation's highest civilian honour to a sportsman might reek of cuteness anywhere else, but in India there is no embarrassment in suggesting that Tendulkar be placed in the same category as the great leaders, scientists and social workers.

This could well be Tendulkar's last World Cup, but will it also be his last one-day international? It is a format of the game that he caused to burst into life again with a double century against South Africa last year and by taking India, the nerve centre of the game, into the final of the World Cup.

Like Alexander the Great, he has no more worlds to conquer, goes one argument. Tendulkar's injured body parts have been discussed more ardently than Cleopatra's nose.

Since he was a boy of 16, international cricket is the only thing Tendulkar has known. His idea of relaxation after a cricket match is to play more cricket matches. He is willing to bat anywhere. At international stadiums, neighbourhood parks, even in his drawing room in the days when his children were growing up and were pressed into service as bowlers.

Can such a man walk away into the sunset merely because he has achieved everything?

The best thing about him he is very humanly :)

that's what makes him special. one has to wonder how someone who has achieved so much in every aspect of life can remain so grounded?? can't think of any other individual, at least in india!

He is neither a myth nor a man...For some people he is An Over rated and Hyped player from India.

hes a nice guy like gilli

but if tendulkar is a myth bradman is a god and ponting a donkey:)

actually nah they both preety equal.

I see india as the dominant team in the future unless australia can pull some players out its a$$

Yeah, and some guy spouted that opinion on another thread in this forum too.
That sort of opinion is bandied about by people who lack comprehension skills or are purely jealous of his attributes as a cricketer.
In any case he will be judged by Cricketing History; not by individuals. And there is time for that yet. It will happen when he hangs up his gloves and pads. That is when his record will speak for him.

Otherwise as a human being; he surprisingly a very well grounded person, never mind what the media may try to depict him as; so far nobody has been able to sling mud at him as a person.

Because of his involvement in cricket peoples interest remain in cricket in 1996-2001 era where cricket become boring for Indian fans . \
He was one man army for Indian cricket that time

It doesn't matter for his fan what other people call him but for some people
Cricket is Sachin and Sachin is Cricket

He is great. Thankfully, India is not dependent on his form anymore.
But some people cant just stop praising him, and jealously guard him against any criticism. He is definitely overrated.

He is normal he is just supported by his cricket board

In pakistan , when a cricketer appraoches a mile stone that will eclipse some old Pakistani player's mile stones , he is suddenly kept out of the team by selectors so that player cannot out shine them.

Example:
Inzimam or Yousif Mohammad , they were kept out of team when they wanted to reach 10,000 runs, infact most obvious is the example of how Mohammad Yousif was banned after he had a steller season with bat scored like runs a bucket ...they were both capable of reaching 10,000 runs mile stones but for some reason ... cricketing gods in Pakistan did not wanted them to contine.... both missed alot of test series in last 5 years of their lives

other example is during wasim akram's time , waqar younis was mysteriously kept out due to professional jealousy

PCB never supports players well being , it looks to "tax cricketers income" example when Shoaib went to play in India all the greedy , PCB officials banned him for nonesense accusations so they can get "BHATTA" tax , from Shoaib under the table to give him forgiveness ... none sense tax money like he was friendly to fans at the stadium or things of that nature or signing autographs or going out with his friends in night

The problem is not the crickters the problem lies in PCB itself ..

The 10% core is all currupt and its like a dead kill on road, but they stay in power behind the scenes, the only people who get the axe are the players who are simple minded who opt to become coaches or trainers....

These road kill officials love to be in administrative jobs hiding away from public scrutiny

These are all shady characters - Even not all selectors are currupt 1-2 are legit the other 8 are all bought out , who ellect special players

There is just too much professional jealousy in Pakaistani PCB

Also Pakistani team does not plays enough Test cricket series , they MUST play regular 6 test series games vs quality opposition , and ample amount of ODI .

20/20 should be played for 1 month only in 12 month season

Even Ramiz Raja got sick of the CEO post in PCB he said he loves to commentate in games, and can't handle corporate politics of PCB , 95% of PCB is crook !! organization

I dont comment on his play but as a human he is so down to earth and composed. what a player who has NO scandal to his credit so far.

there can be criticism on his play which should be digested as every player has plus as well as minus points viz a viz his game. he has some weakness too.
