What's new

Your age, profession, and marital status?

From my above post:

"My thesis was in experimental solid state physics. The hardest part is finding a topic, a research project, that is both doable in a reasonable period of time and worthy of a Ph. D. It is probably just as hard today to do an experimental physics Ph.D. as it was 40 years ago when I did mine. "

Lol!! You can't do an experimental physics PhD thesis through internet research! (Or in the library for that matter) You have to build an apparatus, prepare samples, take data and explain what you see according to the best theoretical understanding that prevails at the time. The key to success is the quality and creativity of the measurement apparatus that you build. You will only pass your thesis committee exam if your experiment uncovers new data or phenomena that advances the field you in which you are working.

That sounds hard  My dad is pushing to do my Phd. at some point in my life. Is it really worth doing it?

Hmmm

24 characters .... should be easy to crack

Factorial 24 means 24 x 23 x 22 x 21 x 20 x 19 x 17 x 16 x 15 x 14 x 13 x 12 x 11 x 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 =____________________________________________________________________________________??

Answer that and that would be the number of ways ways you can arrange 24 characters and then divide it with
24-9 = 15
hence
divide the above number with 15 x 14 x 13 x 12 x 11 x 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1

Plain mathematics...... if you are good at.

You seriously thought I was going to do the math in my head ?

My browser won't let me see the next page (16) in this thread. I think varigeo asked me "What field?" for my thesis?

My PhD thesis was in solid state physics. Specifically I did electro-optical measurements of the surfaces of semiconductor materials, especially silicon, germanium and gallium arsenide. By perturbing the surface with an electric field you shift the band structure which shifts the optical properties. You can then infer some important characteristics about the energy band parameters by fitting your data to various numerically calculated band theories. In essence my experimental results provided the data needed by the theoretical physicists working out various alternative semiconductor band theories. Semiconductor band theories, then, in turn, allow the tailoring of the bands to produce desired effects, such as developing light-emitting diodes of a particular color. the band tailoring is done by adjusting the percentage of various impurities and where these impurities will be bound in the semiconductor materials crystal lattice.

Its fun. Its the only thing that you do for your own self surmounting odds at every turn. Gives you a sense of accomplishment - every step of the way!

Age 26, returned twice from Iraq deployment. Waiting to be shipped to Afghanistan in next 3 months. just recently finished 400 hours of A-10 wreaking Havoc.

After being unemployed for more than 2 years i decided to join the Air Force.

For real? You need to get 'black tagged' then.

Just remembered the good old days of High School Mathematics thanks to your post about cracking a 24 character password combination of Elmo........ I was wondering if some one has time resources and a few more information available one could really crack her credit card.

It's a bug in Firefox 5+. I'm using Chrome ATM to browse PDF.

Thanks, I just switched to Chrome and I can now see page 16. I have had this problem for quite a while. It seemed that once I posted I could not see the next page of posts until there were several more pages of posts. I thought I was being punished by the mods for an infraction that i have that has not yet expired!

Thanks so much TDU! You young whippersnappers are good for something after all!! Now maybe you can help me program my voice mailbox on my cell phone????

@TruthSeeker I was asking Zabanya .....

Thanks anyway

Yes now that TDU helped avoid the Firefox bug I see that your question was for Zabanya. Sorry.

You really have a lot of a spare time on your hand.
