WASHINGTON: The US State Department has posted on its website a new map of India reflecting its long- standing position on the country's geographical boundaries, acknowledging that it had earlier made a "goof up" that triggered strong protest from New Delhi.

"We made a goof up and we fixed it and we're now back in compliance with our own cartographical policy," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters at her daily news conference on Wednesday evening. Her remarks came as she announced the posting of the new and corrected maps of India on the website of the State Department and its travel-related sites.

The previous controversial maps, which showed portions of Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan, were removed by the State Department in November after India's strong objection.

India maintains that the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country.

"I'm thrilled and relieved to tell you that we have now put the revised maps up on our website," Nuland said. ;)

"What you will see when you look at these maps is that they reflect the fact that the United States takes no position on the dispute and urges all the parties to seek a peaceful resolution to resolving the claims," she said.

"What you'll see on the maps is consistent with what the "What you'll see on the maps is consistent with what the US geographic position has been consistently: that there is a dashed line representing the 1972 Line of Control, reflecting Kashmir's unresolved status," Nuland said.

"We neglected to actually label that dotted line in the last round of maps. It has now been labeled. The maps also add our standard disclaimer with regard to Kashmir that says that names and boundary representations are not necessarily authoritative. As I said, that reflects the fact that this is in dispute and the US takes no position on the dispute," she said.

WASHINGTON: The US State Department says it erred in its depiction of disputed Kashmir in maps on its website and after six weeks has posted revised ones.

Spokeswoman expressed relief on Wednesday the new maps of India and Pakistan were now online and complied with US cartographical policy.

The new maps have a dashed line for the 1972 Line of Control that divides Kashmir. Nuland said that reflected its unresolved status.

India and Pakistan have fought two wars over the Himalayan territory, and each claim the portion that the other controls.

Indian journalists have repeatedly raised the map issue since complaints emerged in late November.:taz:

India objected that all of Jammu and Kashmir was not shown as part of India. Pakistan also complained.

good move by usa , hope they don't do such mistakes again

Such a short-lived victory dance by near-sighted Indians. They'll change the map again in the future if it serves their own purposes.

Short lived? I'll give you an example of what a "short lived dance" is. People celebrating talibans wont attack any more and waking up the next day far a disastrous news!

Hmm...change a map.. make friends..
So in other words.. India should make maps that show Kashmir as a Part of Pakistan, Pakistan should publish maps that show Kashmir as a part of India.. China should make maps that show in independent tibet.. and everybody gets to keep their land.
After all.. if the map says it.. must be so.

Sir as usual a good shot by you.

What utter nonsense, some of the splinter groups may have called a ceasefire, but did Pakistan call it a day.
In fact, the scum bags got a good new year call.

Not a bad idea at all. A map is a map.
I was once told by an old-timer who knew Faiz Ahmed Faiz; that in a conversation between friends, poets and other literrateurs, Faiz Sahab said about borders (or words to that effect): "ahkir yeh toh sirf kagaz pe lakeer hai. Main to dil ki darrarein peh sochta hun."
