ISLAMABAD:
With figures of malnutrition rising every year, 50% of Pakistan’s population remains food insecure, according to the UN World Food Program (WFP).
In an exclusive interview with The Express Tribune, WFP representative and Country Director for Pakistan Jean Luc Siblot said that while Pakistan’s government has taken an initiative to cater to the problem, the process will still require much time and resources.
“The recent agreement to donate 500,000 metric tonnes of wheat by the newly created Pakistan Ministry of Food Security and Research (MFSR) might be a step to combat malnutrition and improve food security among vulnerable groups across the country,” said Siblot. “This donation is the largest in recent years by any country where WFP has operations.”
Siblot, who recently came to Pakistan, stressed that the on-ground situation is very different from how the international media portrays it. A huge part of the population is malnourished and this needs to be given top priority.
One result of recurrent natural and man-made crises has been a sharp increase in food insecurity across the country, despite sufficient national food production to meet the needs of Pakistan’s 170 million people. According to WFP, some 83 million people, almost 50 per cent of the population, were food insecure by 2010 – a massive increase from 38 per cent in 2003. In the aftermath of the 2010 flooding, this figure is believed to have risen to 90 million people and may have increased further after the recent floods.
“People do not have access to food items which have the nutritional value to meet their requirements. This would lead to issues with biological and mental development of the people,” Siblot informed.
The WFP representative believes the actual challenge is raising fund for transforming wheat into products that target certain segments of the population, such as baby food and high-energy biscuits. According to him, Pakistan does have resources but lacks the capacity to cater to this problem.
“The reason why the government has asked WFP for support is because our priorities are very well defined” he said.
The agency is likely to make an appeal to raise approximately US$100 million in funds needed for this process. According to Siblot this donation will encourage the international community to step up and support Pakistan in addressing food insecurity in the country. The WFP will begin the project in a few months, as soon as the donation is handed over to the agency by the government. The donation, valued at $144 million, will be handed over to the agency soon.
“The rate of malnutrition, especially amongst children and lactating mothers, is very alarming and something to worry about” stressed Siblot.

World should support pakistan.. very sad situation especially in flood affected area.

Govt must take these matters seriously. I believe that there is major mismanagement. those responsible need to be brought to account. This is heart breaking to see stats like this

I think voluntary work and donations in which we all should get involved is not enough. Our corrupt political leaders need to be forced to address these issues. This more serious than the crax they normally talk about

my heart cry for them...in there any way I can donate ?

With respect - your intention is clear with the posting of the thread. Then you come on here pretending your heart crys for them? Why are you attempting to start a troll fest by opening this? Are you from a nation that never experiences from such sad situations. Is their NO children in India that are going to go to sleep that are not malnourished and desperate for food?
Malnutrition and poverty are a sad site in our region which due to the corruption of certain government officials are rife in our region. If you want to donate why dont you open the door and walk around - you will find plenty of children and people not as fortunate as yourself.
You along with several others are the kinds of weasels that we want to remove from our site. Im glad none of your fellow Indians have thanked you as that says alot.
What i will say is trolls of the likes of you that attempt cheap shots using the words of malnutrition and children belong in the gutter.
I pray that malnutrition be it in Pakistan and India becomes a subject that we can be proud to leave in the past in the near future - and no one child sleeps hungry at night.....

I think it`s a counter thread for an another thread on Indian hunger & malnutrition...

Kids play it`s seems... I am away from both cos "Aaj waise hi ek mazak pe Oscar ki nazar-e-inayat ho gayi hai mujh pe"..

@ topic ...
Both the nations are facing same situation but we are here to discuss how to over come from this situation instead of throwing mud on each other...

As if your uncle is really worried about the poor people or dalits in India!
So you better tell this to your chacha too.:)

why mind about others???

make yourself perfect mate...

Growing population, growing needs and it's about time for all of us to grow up.. Instead of cheap point scoring on each other, if we are really worried, we should rather help the needy.. Insulting the needy is actually insulting the humanity and insulting the creator.. Please do not fall to the level of few on this forum.. In AB Vajpayee's words - "Yeh hamari garima ko shobha nahi deta"

not many seems worry here... simply throwing links of poverty`ll do nothing in the discussion ...

In India we have some schemes for children in govt. school like mid day meal.. Pakistan have any running schemes for children ??

Growing population, growing needs

The problem as pointed out in the article is not food scarcity, rather lack of access or inability to buy the right kind of food. Reasons are many; primarily displacement of large number of people due to floods and military operations in FATA. Then there is also rising inflation which means basic food items simply cost too much. But growing population is no doubt a cause of concern in terms of food security, if not now then for the near future.

Better management and economic policies along with awareness among the people on the importance of nutrition appear to be the answer.

Rightly said, I think we should take up a region as a case study and attempt to eradicate poverty, malnutrition, hunger, female infanticide, illiteracy and unemployment - all these are interlinked somehow and if successful expand it to another region and so on. And pass on the methods used to neighboring countries if the drive is successful.

In India we do have such schemes but as the fate has it for us, all such schemes are corruption marred but still some kids in certain areas are getting benefited where real considerate people are involved.

Don't know much about what's happening at ground level in Pakistan.. I sincerely hope nobody is exploiting them for this very basic need of theirs.. Empty stomach is the root cause of many ills in the society..
