Avalanche traps about 150 Pakistani soldiers

I haven't seen the pictures but if it were of a couple of guys smoking then this is why:

These guys work in shift, after about an hour of digging, it becomes physically impossible to dig on any longer, the lactic acid build-up is fast due to lack of oxygen and takes longer to shake off as the oxygen debt takes it's time. As for the smoking part, that's just to warm the lungs. EVERYBODY IN SIACHEN SMOKES, that's the only way to warm your lungs, otherwise, prolonged deep breathing makes you feel like you have a freezer in your chest and may lead to the lungs being filled with water. I think that's called oedema or something.

I have been deployed to Alaska and Antartica, we didn't smoke outdoors as the air is very dry, and smoking dries the lungs even worse...those guys are asking for problems.

this is no ordinary avalanche..this is second biggest glacier on non-polar region. As we know indian subcontinent is crushing against eurasian plateu causing himalayas to grow every year. growing hills mean steap angle causing rivers flow quickly and empties in the sea , flash floods and avalanche of this nature. Add climate change to the mix it is not pretty picture. this is wake up call for indo-pak. take it easy on human activities in that area. we intelligent humans as we know are here on earth for last 10,000 years, we dont know what mother earth can throw at us which is changing it self for millions of years.. lets not wait for next tragedy..
RIP

global warming is responsible for melting our glaciers, soon all glaciers in pakistan will vanish

Global warming is not news, my sister lives in green bay, 11,000 years ago it was under 2 miles of ice, glaciers have been melting a loooong time.

Excerpts from Live press conference of ISPR..

Between 3-5 Am the glacier fell..Its 70 KM from Sakardu...Takes 7 hours...139 people were there at the time.
Local rescue teams reached the site..But realized the magnitude of the disaster was beyond them.
Out of the 139..11 are civilians.
HQ was at 13000 feet.
Transporting heavy machinery was not easy for us.....

We thank the nation for supporting us and standing behind us...

Thats all was what shown live on PTV of the news briefing by ISPR..

It takes quiet long to happen, nature gives more than sufficient time to mend ways but once it brings itself to neutral position, it's really unbearable. As far as routine slides and avalanches are concerned, people know about them, locations are known and suitable measures are adopted until those come down. For this particular site, there used to be a big slide but that would stop much short but this time it was unprecedented. Someone told me there was a cricket ground also and after running a double, lungs feel lungs feel like coming out of mouth.

Hi,

Indeed they have been---but now they have reached a critical point where melting is much much faster than it was in the past.

we should respect nature and avoid destroying it...
but such accelerated warming of climate has happened in the past.....when volcanic eruptions release large quantities of CO2 and Methane and sulphur.

Both Pakistan and India has worlds largest concenteration of mountain glaciers.....May be both can join hands in research in this field...

Where have all the bodies gone ( I mean no disrespect ). JCB's should have cleared the snow by now.

Reason one is that it is too deep.

Reason 2 is that once they get closer to the suspected location, they have to use hands,, because the use of machinery might accidentally damage the bodies.

Reason 3 is that the ice is damn hard.

unless thermite or something is being used.

i dont understand one think, team from USA arrived first then germans came, but germans have reached the site and USA team is nit going because of bad weather, it doesnt make any sense, can somebody explain?
