Latest Update: 04.25.13, 16:53 / Israel News

It has been cleared for publication that Israeli F-16 fighter jets downed a drone off of Haifa's coastline at around noon Thursday.

The unmanned aircraft apparently entered Israel's airspace from the north and was heading south. Explosions were heard in the area.

Israel Navy vessels were searching for the wreckage. The drone was apparently sent by Hezbollah in Lebanon. The warplanes were scrambled from the Ramat David airbase. Reports of Israeli flyovers in Lebanon followed the drone's interception.

The IDF's Spokesperson's Unit issued a statement saying, "Today the (army) thwarted the penetration of an unmanned aircraft into Israeli territory. Shortly after 1 pm a drone was identified as it was flying north to south from the Lebanese coastline. The air defense system tracked for (several) minutes it while it was still in Lebanese territory, and it was tracked throughout its flight until the interception. IAF planes were scrambled, as were combat helicopters, after it was determined that the aircraft was not friendly, and certainly not (an Israeli) aircraft. The Air Force commander authorized the interception."

The drone was downed over the sea, some eight to 10 kilometers off Haifa's coastline after being identified by IAF radars at 13:30 pm. It was downed at exactly 13:40 pm by two F-16 fighter jets on the first attempt.

The army noted that the downed drone was relatively small, and it remains unclear whether it was carrying explosives, like other attack drones in Hezbollah's possession. The IDF does not know at this time what the drone's destination was, but said it was headed south.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received an update on the attempted infiltration of Israeli airspace when he was on a flight to the country’s north. The PM’s plane landed for a short time, until the drone was shot down, and then continued on its way.

“I see this attempt to cross into Israeli territory as a very serious issue. We will continue to do whatever is necessary to ensure the citizens of Israel remain safe,” the PM said in a statement.

Hez playing with fire.

Already taking casualties in Syria and now looking to provoke another front?

Maybe time for a pincer movement.

It will be good when Hez are finished. It will be a better region for the Lebanese, Syrians and Israelis.

such a laughable comment !!! :D

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attempted to violate Israeli airspace from the north at approximately 2 p.m. this afternoon (Thursday, April 22). The UAV was tracked by IDF ground and aerial surveillance for the duration of its flight path as it attempted to approach Israel's coast. Israel Air Force aircraft intercepted the UAV and successfully downed the target five nautical miles off the coast of the northern Israeli city of Haifa.

IDF naval forces are currently searching the area.

This is the second time in the past seven months that a UAV has been intercepted in Israeli airspace.

UAVs pose a serious threat to the State of Israel's security. The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to violate Israel's sovereignty or harm its security.

In October 2012 the IDF downed a UAV over the northern Negev. The UAV had infiltrated Israeli airspace from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea. The craft was identified by IDF control systems and was tracked for the length of its flight path in Israeli territory by ground and aerial surveillance, including IAF fighter jets. After several minutes, the craft was successfully brought down in the northern Negev desert, to avoid potential harm to a populated area.

During the Second Lebanon War in August 2006, Israel Air Force fighter jets intercepted two Ababil UAVs launched by Hezbollah toward Haifa. The UAVs were located and identified by the IAF's northern air-defense and aerial control units before it managed to cross the border from Lebanon into Israel. The UAVs were downed by F-16C fighter jets – one fell in the Mediterranean Sea in Lebanese territory while the other was taken down north of Haifa.

Yes. I'm sure the Lebanese thought war with Israel in 2006 was worth it to get back a handful of the Mullah's children.

Hez have brought nothing but destruction. A democratic Lebanon hijacked. Wars provoked and the so-called "defender of Lebanon" now fighting in Syria.

No one wants them. Only Shia support them. Druze, Christians and Sunnis in Lebanon want them out.

Thanks for your kind gift, but no one wants it. You can have it back.

You'll need them for when your next protest movement starts up again.

such a laughable comment !!! :D

Very Better than Iranian's reply....
First of see it Hezbollah and some trroops of your claimed elite forces can stand against FSA, then talk to Israel, FSA already caught the key Syria Military felicities in Homs

Endless supply of Sunni fighters. They are lining up from North Africa. Even European Arabs are heading over. Chechens too, those guys are brutal.

You cannot compete with those numbers.

Don't get me wrong bro, I don't support either side. You're both savages to me  - but I think after Syria, there's a good chance chickens might come home to roost in Iran. Certainly Lebanon Shia will feel some heat.

I can only see defeat for you. Even if it takes 10 years.

Meanwhile, civilians pay the price.

Ya Keep Laughing, Everyone know the End of your proxy is going to be in the hands of both FSA and some Sunnis of Lebanon..

you mean your proxy !? :coffee:

Nope, ControlledPair is right. The Suuni had gained support and the longer the conflict goes the more support they'll get. You will see what happens to Hezbo, Assad and Iran. Remember, the Shia are minority in the Middle East and the world. What is Assad and Iran doing is regrettable, we already saw what the Shia are doing to the Suuni. They'll sure pay the price.
