Who was the greatest 20th century mathematician? China's Chen Jingrun or

HE was a mathematician,,,he had a beautiful brain ,, unlike u ....so here his looks don,t matter,,,,

He was also notoriously ugly (no surprise there).

Greatest Mathematicians of the Modern Era:

Leonhard Euler

Henri Poincaré

Carl Gauss

Alex. Grothendieck

Pierre de Fermat

David Hilbert

Not the 20th century, but the last 400 years or so.

And none of them is an American. :omghaha: China was occupied by Mongols during the time, so China's lack of science from 1500s till after 1950 is understandable.

Many of them lived before the existence of an America, or a Canada.

But hey, I know what all of them are anyway, regardless of nationality.

Give me one reason why I should believe you over Michio Kaku.

You are no one. For all it matters you may be a Pakistani or a Bangladeshi masquerading as a American white trash to hide your
inferiority complex.

This doesn't excuse the fact that America produced no great mathematician from the 1600s when America was settled by English colonists to 2013. :coffee:

I never heard of Chen Jingrun.

Chen is one of the greatest mathematicians ever, on the same pedestal as Ramanujan. :coffee:

Yes it does. English Colonialists were not exactly focused on sitting down in Universities all day and pondering on new theorems.

Besides, those same Englishman were doing PRECISELY that.... just over in England. Big f'ing difference.

I don't know of Michio Kaku ever saying that all of the Mathematicians I named were less influential or great than Ramanajajaja or whatever.

All I see is a quote about how this guy wasted his time copying off of Westerners or something. No surprise, seeing as how he is the best India has to offer and yet no one has really ever heard of him.

And of course we don't even know that Kaku ever said this (not that I give two Indian street poops), as it is common knowledge by now that Indians have a history of quoting individuals for saying things that they never did say.

And what's the excuse that the English colonists in America since the 1600s were not focused on pondering math? :woot: Besides James Watson, Francis Crick, Edwin Hubble, I can't think of a world renowned American born scientist. Compared to Chinese scientists in times other than Mongol occupation, that's pretty scanty coming out of America.

James Watson, Frances Crick, Edwin Hubble... ummm, you just kinda named a few.

It's interesting that you would want to limit it to "American born" instead of just American, which makes no sense whatsoever as Americans are not just those that were born here. I guess it's only to 'level the playing field' seeing as how all 20th century scientists ended up becoming American citizens.

Anyway, just a few: Robert Oppenheimer, Richard Feynman, Robert Goddard, Carl Sagan, Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, Orville & Wilbur Wright, George Eastman, Elisha Otis, Samuel Morse, Edwin Armstrong.... I can keep going but it would take far too much time to list all of them.

I almost forgot one of my personal favorites, Craig Venter.

Edit: Seeing as how you now edited your comment to compare the number of Chinese scientists to American one's, I'm having a good laugh.

Any one of the people I listed above has accomplished more than the entire Chinese civilization has in science and technology in the last 400 years or so.

Thomas Edison and the Wright brothers are inventors, not exactly scientists. If we count invention, America lags behind China in number of inventors. Bi Sheng, for example, invented movable type printing in the 1040s. This achievement is on par with that of the Wright brothers' airplane.

It is worthwhile to note that Thomas Edison ripped off of Nikola Tesla. Tesla significantly improved upon Edison's design, but Edison cheated his contract with Tesla and never paid Tesla the 10,000 bucks.

Nikola Tesla is an American too, but oh wait he was born somewhere else!! Doesn't count then... Haha, LMFAO.

This MUST be a joke, MUST BE. I have not even heard Indians make such a hilarious claim. Modern medicine, the first modern rockets, the internet, the nuclear bomb, the Moon Landings, friggin Penicillin for gods sake.

But you know what? Hey! Maybe your right! List some Chinese inventions that we use today, for which we should be ever grateful to them for.

Wernher von Braun was not born in America. In fact, had Americans not forcibly brought him to America, I doubt he would have ever obtained American citizenship. Ditto with Albert Einstein, who was the brains behind the Manhattan project, though in his case it was escaping to America rather than forcibly brought to America.

On top of my head, I can think of toothbrush, paper money, toilet paper, positive and negative numbers, stern post rudder, ship bulkhead partition, paper. List of Chinese inventions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Post the Wiki page for American inventions - I dare you.

The problem with you guys is that you cannot comprehend what Kaku has quoted, and here you are listing the greatest Mathematicians of 20th century! . By the way from which Madrasa are you?
