India successfully testfires 'maneuverable' BrahMos supersonic cruise missile

I hope you know the India has also give quite a few surprises in the past. Two can play this game.

have we said anything about that ?? You are a growing country and have money to do lot of things in the defence field. No doubt about that, failure and success are part of it, some things fail and some pass, and some pass after being failed on times. That is how things works.

But my post was to the other member who had some real misconceptions in his head.

If this is such a wonderful weapon, who won't Russians use it. mmmm

I think they have better weapons and refuse to use Brahmos. What is the missile that is of longer ranged and lighter? The problem with Brahmos is its weight and size. Its too heavy that each plane can only carry one? Can MKI carry 2?

The Russian military already have something better. I'm certain. I just don't have the name of the missile that has similar ability as Brahmos but longer range

thogh it is a joint development the missile is get developed india specific, its india's need to go for a supersonic missile, russia's need is long range missile what they have in plenty and what brahmos lack

if this is really a bad missile why russia is not ready to sell it to other nations even thogh india is ready to market it,russia is not ready to part with the tech which means their is something substantial in it

Russia needs a longer missile because its planes would not be able to get any where close to a US task force. India probably doesn't have this concern as it won't' face the US 5th fleet. Unless if India is stupid enough to challenge or interfere with the 5th fleet in Indian Ocean. In this case, Brahmos would be totally inaffective against the US fleet anyway because its plane would not be able to get close to the US ships and Brahmos can easily be handled by the evolved sea sparrow missile.

A bit of reality...

Maneuvers increases time to target and consume fuel, which negatively affects range.

Question: At which stage of flight does the missile begins its maneuver?

The question is very important as there are two main crucial factors affecting the targeting system. Line-of-sight (LoS) rate change between missile and target and sensor capability.

If the missile performs its maneuvers AFTER it has chosen a target, does its maneuvers take it outside of its sensor physical scan limits? If it does, what is the reacquisition method and how will this method compensate for the chance that during the return maneuver, the sensor encounter additional targets that may or may not have the same return signal strength? This is regardless of sensor type: radar or infrared or hybrid.

On the other hand, if after the missile chose a target, begins its maneuvers and those maneuvers DOES NOT take it beyond its sensor physical scan limits, meaning that during these maneuvers the missile maintains continuous track of the chosen target, then its maneuvers will be severely limited in all axis and in rate change., thereby increasing its vulnerability to countermeasures.

thats whta i said it is developed according to suit needs

india wants speed
russia wants range
thats simple

but bhramos with its its newly found maneuverability can overwhelm any defensive systems

brahmos still would be defeated by the evolved sea sparrow if for some reason the radar controller fall asleep. US are usually very good at selling defensive weapons such as evolved sea sparrows and i can imagine Pakistan getting some in a few years.

by that time we will also evolve brahmos to a much greater extent

and the new found love of america towards india make as also eligible to get this sparrow missiles

and by the way the fully manuverable supersonic brahmos is 1st of its type in the world as no other nation even have supersonic missiles,i will really like to see how much sheild sparrow can provide against brahmos in case of an indo-pak conflict

of course. India can get many US weapons now. Its the matter of whether India is too prideful to ask for them.

A bit of reality...

In a missile versus ship scenario, if the missile miss the ship even by one meter, the ship win. The defense method does not need to destroy the attacking missile, just need to make it miss by that one meter.

but another reality is that ships dont move that fast to dodge a missile, thats to a maneuverable one

The only capable defence against Brahmos is the evolved Sea Sparrow. US will soon massively export this missile.

Genious??????

Why u wanna derail this thread?

We have already discussed it to death with u in your post to a different thread?

As the Brahmos has a land to land version already deployed, can u explain how a ship based Sea Sparrow will defend it?

Do you really think that being in motion is the only defense for a ship? Ever heard of chaff/flare? This is about making the missile miss its target by any means available.

This is from an Indian blog:

Just got off the phone with BrahMos CEO Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, delighted with the 11.30AM test of the Naval BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in a vertical launch from the Indian Navy destroyer INS Ranvir. Dr Pillai reveals the test was specifically aimed at testing the missile's accuracy when its flight path was infused with "diversionary manoueuvers" to mask the general direction of the launcher warship. The missile, vertically launched from a Vertical Launcher built for the BrahMos, was rolled in all directions successfully before before it smashed into the hull of INS Meen a decommissioned target vessel. Photos of actual launch will be posted shortly. Stay tuned. "

The bold part and the underline part to me suggest that the maneuvering is before it comes into the attacking phase as its aim is to hide the location of the launching ship. So my guess is when it is fired, then it does the maneuvering phase, once done, it goes in a straight path towards its target. No "S" kind of maneuvering phase at the end of the attack profile.
