What's new

PA's New Haider MBT is the T99A- Type 99 MBT

Honestly I'd try taking the 1500hp Ukrainian 6TD-3, putting into the VT-4, then incorporating some Altay elements (e.g. armour technology, active protection, etc) to the VT-4. We'd have something similar to the K2 Black Panther.

Thinking on the same line sir, we must form some alliance or something :P
Though "thinking on same lines" is not a prerequisite for alliances anymore
We have good experience in tank manufacturing and i still feel that customization will be the BEST way forward for us. Rather then buying anyone type we must try to look to select one basic machine and put in different subsystems to suite our needs.

JUST AS AN EXAMPLE, go for T99 A as main tank, engage Ukraine for engine (just like old days) Use different sources for sensors and sights (IF required), same for active protection system. This way we will get exactly what we want, this seems to be the only way!
And, that basic machine (that is the main body or the chassis) can be used as sort of a standard for IFV, APC, engineering and recovery vehicles etc

The must for a new tank is active defense against atgms. Jamming systems like shotra are always vulnurable and workarounds are easy to develop to overcome those jammers. As we see in Syrian conflict T90 relies on its armor rather than shotra which failed in several videos. Modular design would be better which can also be used to upgrade older Alqhalid tanks in your inventory. China can develop a system to upgrade your tanks with these similar to arena or trophy active defense add ons.

Secondly reactive armor should be of concern. Other than era there are reactive armor types like non explosive reactive armor that can withstand tandem charge double warhead atgm since the first charge fails to detonate any explosive in armor. NERA and NxRA are also lighter than ERA. A combination of both can be used. From frontal aspect there is more armor and ERA would increase the defense against other tanks rounds like sabot or heat. You can also see atgm coming from front more easily apply generate fog and other measures. From side aspects where there is less armor layers of NERA and NxRA can be applied on top of the main armor to withstand rpg and atgm rounds from sides or back.

Thirdly the crew training equipment needs an update. It is the heart of the system. A crew with high situational awareness can for example detect and evade an atgm attack by maneuver and fog generation etc without active defense or armor coming into scene. It is not a jeep with a cannon. Just like pilots there should be simulators to train the crew against all types of odds such as atgm ambush. mine fields. outnumbered tank warfare. enemy air support etc. The crew should be trained effectively and quickly to take the most appropriate action under those conditions.

New Ukrainian engine for Haider or AK 2

Ukraine’s defence industry, the availability of an exportable 1500hp engine is a very welcome addition. In fact, a 1500hp power-rating has essentially become the standard for new MBT designs; the Hyundai Rotem K2 Black Panther, NORINCO VT-4, and Otokar Altay, among others. Given how proactive Turkey has been in recent months with securing joint-development and production agreements with Ukraine, it will be worth seeing if this new engine could make its way into the hands of Otokar and FNSS.

In a previous piece, we suggested that Pakistan could consider producing the 6TD-series of engines under license; the design could be scaled across thousands of al-Khalid and Haider-based designs over the next several decades. The fact that a 1500hp engine is available bodes well for the idea, especially if it manages to operate well in Pakistan’s diverse operational conditions. In such a scenario, the Haider program could also be impacted (by resulting in serious consideration of the Oplot-M or a heavily customized VT-4). Besides new tanks, Pakistan could theoretically retrofit existing designs, such as the al-Khalid, with the more powerful powerplant.

This is an assumption our part, but today could be the right time to try and secure a manufacturing plant for the 6TD line (1200hp and 1500hp). Ukraine’s precarious economic and political situation is a concern, but its technology base cannot be ignored; Pakistan could have meaningful latitude in securing licensed manufacturing rights at a relatively attractive cost.

The engine would enable the Pakistan Army to comfortably source its various tank designs – it would have limited concern of supply-side restrictions, especially in the long-term. It may also enhance Pakistan’s ability to export tanks as well (more so in the long-term when designs such as the al-Khalid 2 make an appearance). But the emphasis should be on having an engine available that is fully suited for Pakistan’s intrinsic needs without supply-side restrictions.

we shouldn't waste money to upgrade AL-Khalid with these new engines They are doing well with 1200hp. but it could be a bridge for Altay. if we are willing to Buy it but of course Sanction proof. so we can ask turkey to fit Altay with these Ukranian Engines and Pakistan should manufacture it in Taxila under license.

Pakistan must consider the 1500 HP engen for AK if we want to add adfidion add on armor. Otherwise performance of tank will suffer and without add on armor the tank will not fair well in future.

I think if we consider growing Turkey Pak Military cooperation it won't be surprise if we see It combine the technology from both Chinese and Turkish technology with either Ukrainian engine or Turkish PowerPack to meet the unique requirement of Pak army .

@Quwa it seems sir the type 99 is being finalized and the approach is same as we discussed previously. A Hull to be massively modified with fire control, optics, protection systems and engine. I just hope type 99 was the best choice as main frame with things like steel specs and design up to the mark. If so, this new project will shape and define our armoured corps of future!!

Saw a news article someplace T-84 Oplots return for testing again in Pakistan.

So still Al-Haider decision not finalized.

To be labelled as AK2? What a pity. PLA has already inducted the ZTZ-99A2 variant with all those upgrades.

This is not AK 2 but AL HAIDER Tank. AK 2 is separately being developed

It seems fishy. The AK2 has been discussed to death and still no one really has any credible info on it's design. In the past you have stated that there is no such thing as AK2.
