Two U.S. soldiers have gone missing in Afghanistan, as separate bomb attacks claimed the lives of five American troops.

The missing soldiers left their military compound Friday but never returned.

The Afghan chief for Charkh district, located in Logar province in the south, said an armoured vehicle was spotted Friday night. There were two people inside, but it's unclear if they were the missing soldiers.

"They stopped in the main bazaar of Charkh district. The Taliban saw them in the bazaar," district chief Samer Gul told The Associated Press. "They didn't touch them in the bazaar, but notified other Taliban that a four-wheel vehicle was coming their way."

Meanwhile, four U.S. soldiers died in a single bomb blast Saturday amid the latest push by international forces to target Taliban hot spots. Another soldier died in a separate bomb attack, NATO said in a statement.

Including the deaths on Saturday, NATO has lost 75 soldiers in Afghanistan this month.

Fifty-six of these July deaths were American soldiers.

The rising American casualties are making it harder for U.S. President Barack Obama to win support for the war as he sends in thousands of reinforcement troops into Afghanistan.

The U.S.-led international forces are targeting Taliban strongholds in the southern part of Afghanistan in a bid to strengthen the control the Afghan government holds there.

Also Saturday, the Afghan Interior Ministry said five Afghan civilians were killed by a bomb in Uruzgan province's Chora district.

yes, they can rest in peace now after ruining others
A totally uncalled for comment.......

A soldier is a soldier.....He obeys order....No matter what.....And every soldier fights for his just cause.....So please show some respect.....They died for their country....Even if you don't like that country doesn't mean you start disrespecting the dead soldiers.....

sorry mate you are wrong here, first they are human then soldiers, every soldier must know human values and rights of other and surely these yakees understand right and wrong from barracks to their personal lives. Though there are heros in America as well who opposed these misadventures of US govt backed by proactive zionist lobby, and some soldiers even refused to go to these illegal wars, i believe those wo/men should be respected but not who just obey orders even by knowing that his/her acts would be unjust.

and yes those who fight bravely and die for their country are always respected, even by the enemies, but in the end all that matters is who had a just cause, and whole world knows who is wrong here and actual reasons behind occupying the muslim lands.

dont forget that Pakistani soldiers were also captured and butchered in front of the cameras by the Taliban, in fact they had been captured in very large numbers compare to these 2 soldiers. it is war not a chocolate party, being killed and captured is part of this game, dont cheer for their capture or death, it is not good. and you cant judge wrongly who is wrong or right. the taliban are the wrong people, they had been and they are wrong. they have killed their own peopole by thousands of thousands every time, they have destroyed and sold out their country, how more wrong could it get? some people just cant stop their joy for every gain of the taliban, but trust me, if these monsters gain a victory, you will be one of their first victim.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, July 25, 2010 (AFP) - The Taliban said Sunday that one of two American soldiers missing since Friday had been killed in a gun battle with the insurgents, while the other was captured alive.

"One of the two was killed in the exchange of fire and we arrested the second alive," said Zabihullah Mujahid, after earlier denying the Taliban were involved in the disappearance of the pair in eastern Logar province.

"We have taken both the body and the captured soldier with us and they have been carried to a safe location. We claim responsibility for it now," he told AFP.

"We have not made any decisions on their fate and what we will demand for their release. That is a decision to be made later," he said.

He said the pair had been attacked after arriving in Charkh district, in the south of the volatile province, just south of Kabul.

"Our mujahideen attacked them," he said, echoing earlier reports from local officials that they had been ambushed as they drove into an area of Logar known to be dominated by Taliban-linked militants.
He had no explanation for why he had earlier denied that the Taliban were involved in the disappearance of the pair, who went missing around 8 pm (1530 GMT) on Friday.

Local officials said the Americans were wearing uniform, though their vehicle was believed to be an unmarked, armoured four-wheel-drive.
It was recovered on Saturday "a bit off where it should have been," another official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

At least two local radio stations broadcast descriptions of the soldiers, and offered rewards of ten thousand dollars for the safe return of each man.

An ISAF official said no information had been received.

"There is no confirmation that they are dead or have been kidnapped," he said, adding: "There are rumours that one of them is dead."

All reports were unsubstantiated, he added.

Military helicopters were sweeping the area where the men went missing, in a massive land and air manhunt, the officials said.
