30 Filipino police commandos killed in clash with rebels

30 commandos in single day combat..!!! great loss for Philippines Army.. RIP..

they didn't get any air-support while they ambushed.. ?

Its the most tragic loss in its history for the Police not the Army, the death toll already reach 50 including 11 injured. Air force could not just conduct airstrike cuz these could derail the ongoing peace talks with the MILF. Even if they do ignore the peace deal, they need coordination with the trapped PNP-SAF on the ground to avoid friendly fire which in this case none because the police did not coordinate with the AFP and the MILF, Why? maybe because of the bounty.

Some rumors say the SAF enter there to serve the warrant mostly in civilian attire but their haircut and bearing gave them up, civilian runners of the BIFF notice it and so they were ambushed. Upon hearing the gunfight the MILF join the fray

To those who are not familiar with the dynamics of armed groups in Mindanao

1. Under the peace process, MILF camps recognized by the peace panels are allowed including their weapons until finalization of the peace process.
2. There are parts in Mindanao where BIFF and MILF are indeed ' neighbors' and coexisting peacefully but there are also areas where they are in conflict and sometimes engage in gunfights.
3. Clan and kinship overrule group affiliation in most cases so there are incidents where even MILF commanders fight each other over a family dispute.
4. The MILF and BIFF camps in Mamasapano are indeed close to each other and many of the fighters from each camp are relatives. The MILF camp is recognized by the peace panel but the BIFF is not. Under the agreement, the AFP cannot enter the MILF camps without coordination same as MILF cannot move freely out of their camps without coordinating with the AFP.

45IB troops and a number of Scout Rangers were deployed to answer late call for assistance but encountered a strong blocking force that they had to clear first before they could reach the pinned SAF operatives.

Why? they were killed because no good training. We have strong police commando vs Philippines.

50 families are grieving now, do you really want to compare now who is good and not

RIP for the fallen, rather than grieving we should taking moral lesson from this accident, learned from that and then we can doing better in future.

Uncoordinated operation like this one is very risky, i don't know what in the mind of those Police officer, going to bastion of rebel forces to catch one of their leader without armored vehicles and back up from Armed forces.

Brutality marked killing of cops in Mamasapano clash—survivor

The members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force were brutally killed when they tried to serve an arrest warrant on a "high value target" in the area, believed to be a rebel stronghold.

In a report on GMA News "24 Oras," the survivor said that the rebels took away the uniforms and night vision goggles from the police officers. They also used the firearms of the SAF members to shoot them at a close range.

To save himself, the survivor hid under the water lilies floating on a river. He was shot twice by a sniper but the rebels stopped pursuing him, thinking he was already dead.

"Ini-sniper ako pero buti nalang nakatakas ako," he said.

When he went out of the river, another group of rebels also attacked him and tried to take away his gun but he fought back.

"Lahat sila, eight. Talagang niratrat ko talaga," the survivor said.

"Pumunta ako sa may mais para 'di ako makita hanggang sa nagtanong ako sa matanda, 'Saan ang daan dito?' Buti't tinuro," he added.

He then reached the place where police officers and the military were waiting.

"Humiwalay na talaga ako kasi lahat sila may tama sila. Wala na, hopeless na," he also said.

Finding Marwan

Mamasapano mayor Benzar Ampatuan said that the local government was not informed about the SAF operation to capture Malaysian bomb maker and Jemaah Islamiyah member Zulkifli Bin Hir, also known as "Marwan."

"Wala talagang nasabi talaga... even the ground commander. Nalaman ko nalang na may operatives tayo sa loob around 7 a.m. dahil dumating pa sa bahay ko ang mga police natin, provincial police, at saka 'yung isang sundalo natin," he said.

The team that had a clash with the rebels in Barangay Tukanalipao from 5 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday was a special unit of the SAF called "Seaborne," which was from Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan. This group was also trained in the United States.

According to GMA News' intelligence sources, the group had been going around the area for five times already in search of Marwan.

It was only when they intercepted a cellphone call from their target that they launched the operation to target him.

However, the 70-member unit did not manage to win over the 300 members of BIFF coddling the terrorist plus other members of MILF, the report said. —NB, GMA News

@Ayan81 according to survivor testimony, the Police goes in full battle dress, and they even using NVG surely this is not cover ops attire to me. They intended to catch/arrest Marwan in their flashy uniform/combat gear. And 50 to 100 police officers is not a small number either ......

Why not send the Army, even they are police SWAT/commando they are still a light force for urban fighting only

We condole with our friends in the Philippines. Hopefully stability and rule of law is re-established in Mindanao.

So surely it's due to lack of background support and mismanagement of officers.. dmmn..!! they didn't got even a armoured car in such a large scale ops... it lead to death for them..

This is why we should have bought A129s instead of AW109 - those can be used to strafe the terrorists position, hell we should rather summary execute terrorists rather than bring them to the justice.

Though it makes you wonder why the SAF and the military didn't cooperate...

This is why we should NOT negotiate with terorrists

and as for conkhi, let him be, he thinks that GIGN alone is better than everyone's counter-terrorism units and can kick everyone left and right without significant losses.

Philippines should not be "dealing" with this terrorist group. They should exterminate them all: Abu Sayaff, MNLF, MILF et al.

Philippines should really retaliate on them terrorist. I can't imagine 50 Police SAF massacred.
In 2003 during Indonesian Anti-Insurgency mission in Aceh, 7 Marines were ambushed and killed brutally by GAM when patrolling. The Generals were so pissed and angered, then we retaliating by conducting massive operation even Napalm are almost involved

Why there are no armored vehicles when u guys conduct the operation?

None its far from the main roads plus the SAF is special commando unit no tanks
