JULY 4: Dozens of lawmakers in India's Andhra Pradesh state have resigned over their demand for the creation of a new state in southern India called Telangana.
So far 74 legislators from the ruling Congress and opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) have quit and more resignations are threatened. Andhra Pradesh saw violent protests for and against the proposal last year.
Correspondents say the resignations could destabilise the Congress government in the southern state.
A minority government could lead to fresh elections there or direct rule from the centre.
An official report on the proposal for Telangana set out a range of options, which included maintaining the status quo, granting greater powers for Telangana within Andhra Pradesh and full-blown statehood.
The BBC's Soutik Biswas in Delhi says the resignations, cutting across party lines, will plunge Andhra Pradesh into a fresh round of unrest.
With a population of 40 million, the proposed Telangana state comprises 10 of Andhra Pradesh's 23 districts, including the state capital and India's sixth most populous city, Hyderabad.
All the legislators who have resigned belong to the Telangana region - there are 117 lawmakers in the 294-seat assembly who belong to the area.
And the party leading the demand for statehood, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), is sticking to its position.
Opponents of the move are unhappy that Hyderabad, home to many major information technology and pharmaceutical companies, could become Telangana's new capital.
The final decision on a new state lies with the Indian parliament. But the state assembly must also pass a resolution approving its creation.
Deep divisions have emerged over the Telangana issue in the past year.
In December 2009, India's Congress party-led government promised that the new state would be formed but later said more talks were needed.
The announcement prompted widespread protests in the state, and a student committed suicide in support of the formation of Telangana.
PTI report adds: Eleven out of 15 ministers of Andhra Pradesh cabinet hailing from Telangana region on Monday resigned from their posts as well as membership of the legislative assembly on separate statehood issue but maintained that it was “not to defy” Congress high command.
After submitting their resignation from assembly membership to Deputy Speaker Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, a group of ministers drove to Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy’s camp office and put in their papars.
Four other ministers from Telangana, including Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha, chose not to follow in the footsteps of their colleagues.

Where should it go then? It seems a very interesting and useful news item. The much expected and anticipated break up of India.

One expects a level of maturity while reading the news.

The much anticipated ' break up' of Indian is nothing but a short sighted ploy by politicians. These blokes can threaten en masse resignation to seek another state but resent the lok pal bill coz it shall lead to transparency.

The ' break up ' is a win win for all - Politicians & babus - More Chief Ministers, more state ministers, more state secretaries, more IG Police, more direct allotment of funds et all.

Further the elections in the state are due,if they do not monkey around they will not get elected.

This is for info of the uninitiated .

I am from Hyderabad and i haven't heard anybody here speaking of declaring Independence from India, how the hell did Munshi babu get this news.

Why would the demand for a separate state warrant to independence I don't understand and that is break up of india wow .

First Operation Searchlight has to happen. similar to how many bangladeshis got killed.

Then Operation Blitz has to happen. Again number of bangladeshis got maimed.

Then a power, equivalent of USA or Russia has to intervene.

Otherwise you could keep dreaming.

Similar break up killed 3 million bangladeshis, yet it wants break up of another country. Very peacefull indeed.

Islam is a religion of Peace, I don't know if you a disgrace to your country or religion.

Can't we all just ignore munshiji and discuss the topic at hand?

I've heard that the region of Telengna is quite affuent as compared to other parts of AP. They feel that they are being exploited by the state ruling class and the taxes are spent on other regions. Would any Andhraiite like to comment on that?
