Mumbai: Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab has pleaded for mercy in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks case. His mercy petition has been sent to the President's office.

Last month, the Supreme Court rejected a plea by Kasab, the only terrorist caught alive during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, to commute the death sentence handed to him by the Bombay High Court to life imprisonment.

Confirming the death sentence, the top court observed that the primary and foremost offence that Kasab was charged with was waging war against India and "We are left with no option, but to uphold the sentence."

The two Judge bench also rejected the 25-year-old's contention that he was not given a free and fair trial in the case. The bench observed that the failure of the government to provide him with an advocate at the pre-trial stage did not vitiate trial court proceedings against him. It also held that the confessional statement given by Kasab, which he retracted during trial, was very much voluntary except for a very small portion.

Kasab had moved the Supreme Court on February 14 this year against the High Court verdict of October 10 last year, which upheld a lower court order sentencing the terrorist to death. The lower court had pronounced its judgement on May 6, 2010, 18 months after Kasab was captured.

Over 160 people were killed in the 2008 Mumbai attacks when 10 Pakistani terrorists sailed from Karachi to Mumbai to show India a side of terror it had never dreamt possible. While Kasab was captured, all the other terrorists who had sailed with him and attacked Mumbai were killed during counter-terror operations.

Oh looks like Manmohan is going to accept this plea! Killing Qassab doesn't get India anything but keeping him alive would keep giving India the world sympathy and a reminder of 26/11 which India would like to cash every bit every time over and over again.

BUT - If politics is the name of the game then it can turn either way.

should have tortured this guy to the limits, and forced him to desecrate every doctrine he stands for. Broken him as a man, milked him of all info, and handed him over to the ******* mob, or better yet, send a good old video to hafiz saeed, or put it on the net, for deterrence purposes

Oh, we have done that already...the guy came ready to die, now he begs to live....that actually sums up pretty much the difference between Pakistan & India......

This is where India would have to decide between Country's Interest and Political Interest. Country's Interest says keep kassab alive but this would be at big political cost. By the way if India accepts his plea, this is going to ignite Hindu Extremism and possibly another round of Hindu Muslim clashes. There will be 10s of thoughts going around this one decision and either way India would gain and loose. But as a Pakistani, I would want India to give this devil justice which means to hang him. He was NO mujahid and must not be given 0.01% mercy.

Like innocent Afghans, Pashtoons or Pakistanis dying being innocent, I mourn for the death of Indians who were mattered by this butcher. Qassab deserves the reward for his deeds.

What are you talking about? Indian Muslims despise this guy and his buddies as much as all other Indians-they are Indians first after all. After 26/11 no Muslim cemetary would accept the bodies of the deceased terrorists as they said they weren't Muslims and so the GoI had to bury them in an unknown location.

Like the article said-PRESIDENT, so Pranab Mukerjee NOT MMS-he is the PM. And the case is in the hands of the judicary and the Pres now, political interference is not possible s stop talking nonsense if you could.

Free and Fair trial? LOL. He was caught on camera for gods sakes

he was told he has an acting job in a Bollywood blockbuster and he has to play a part of a terrorist. He cannot understand why his country is treating him like a stranger
As you can see from his interviews he has down syndromes and keep repeating what he is told.
mere ko tere ko, yeah he is from punjab my a$s since when punjabis start speaking mere ko tere ko

You are :welcome:
