The Arjun BLT is claimed to be superior to older Soviet bridgelayers

The Arjun BLT (or Bridge Layer Tank) is a combat engineering vehicle, designed to carry, lay and retrieve an assault bridge. It was developed by DRDO. The reason this bridgelayer was developed, is because the current Indian AVLBs are not capable of supporting the Arjun MBTs, that are much heavier than the previous tanks, operated by the Indian Army. It is worth mentioning that to date there were no production orders on this armored bridgelayer.

This combat engineering vehicle is based on the Arjun main battle tank, which is in limited service with the Indian Army. The turret was replaced with a bridgelaying system. It can handle larger loads and uses cantilever type bridgelaying method, where bridge is laid horizontally. The main advantage of such design, is that it can not be observed some distance away by the enemy.

It is an MLC-70 class bridge, with a payload capacity of 70 t. It provides passage for wheeled or tracked military vehicles. It is also capable of supporting the lighter T-72 or T-90 main battle tanks, that are currently in service with the Indian Army.

The Arjun BLT can carry two types of bridges. A steel bridge can span a gap of 24 m, while aluminum bridge can span a gap of 26 m. The bridge can be recovered from either end. On travelling the bridge is carried in two halves one on top of the other. It is claimed that Arjun based armored bridgelayer is superior to the T-72 based units.

This armored bridgelayer has a crew of two, including driver and commander (bridge operator).

The Arjun BLT has the same level of cross-country mobility as the Arjun main battle tank. Vehicle is powered by a German MTU MB 838 Ka-501 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1 400 hp.

Am still not getting one thing !!!
Please if any one from IA looking at my Post, enlighten me please.

>How come the M1-Abrams fought the gulf war and it weighs around 67.6 short tons ? Even though Iraq infrstructure is good for nothing .
>How come Challenger 2 operated by OMAN ?
>What these Small number of Abraham(100+) doing Afganistan ?
> You didn't asked your GQSR, how come the T90 going to stand when it doesn't offers great advantages over T80U operated by PA.
>All the best tanks in the World Weighed more than 65 Tonnes.
>Why didn't you stopped T90 tank orders immedately when you found serious problem in tank electronics and engine ?

Am not going to accept this lame excuse in the name of effective and reliable equipment.
:argh:

I read somewhere that the biggest criticism of this tank was that its very tall. So with very sensitive tracking devices, its radar signature will be very big.

Radar signature? How many AT systems does PA have that can strike a tank
out of visual range? None. WTF are you talking about? Dont compare tank
battles to air warfare, shows your lackluster knowledge of things.

before you even think of crossing Pakistani bridges, think of the armor piercing shells coming its way.

Foolish. Attack helicopters would clean up the majority of AT weapon wielders much
before the tank actually arrives on scene, besides Arjun's armor is the best in world
after the M1A2's & Chobam-II. It has been tested against APFSDS, TOW, HEAT, DA
rounds and all of them failed to penetrate the armor.

The armor could nullify a hit from a T-72's gun at point blank range.

Remember the bravado of the 1965 attackers of Lahore? That they will have the wine at the Lahore Gymkhana in the evening. Little did they know then they will not be even able to cross the borders.

Remember the bravado of 1971 at Longewala. A whole brigade of PA troops with
close to 400 vehicles came to Longewala and a small batch of 120 IA troops killed
them all.

Besides how do you compare wars of the 60s to that of 21st century? Maybe it
makes sense for you as majority of your tank fleet is of 60s origin but it makes
a stegosaurs' brain-worth sense to us Indians, stop living in yesterday for your
own good. 1971 was a hard lesson. People who fail to learn from a hard lesson will
have to go through it again. Astaravista!

Main points :

  • ‘At Present, the Army has Decided to Induct 118 Arjun Mk-2 Tanks Instead of 124’
  • In all, the army’s armour profile through 2015-2020 could comprise of approximately 1700 T-90S, 1800-2000 upgraded T-72M1s, and 250-500 Arjun’s. Surely, prospective orders for the FMBT, which at the very least would be for 1000-1500 tanks,
  • they also admit that the Arjun is appreciably more modern in comparison to the T-72 & T-90, in many respects. For example, the Arjun can fire almost twice the number of rounds the T series tanks can, from its main gun.
  • Arjun outgunning the T-90 and T-72 in comparative trials, is akin to the Light Combat Aircraft ‘Tejas’, defeating the F-16 in a dogfight!
  • Arjun barrel offers better life when compared to the T series of tanks.
  • non-availability of spares is a continuing problem — the usage of spares was greater than anticipated. The process of obtaining replacement spares is time consuming, since there are a number of agencies involved. Limited production numbers further exacerbate the problem.
  • the first Mk-2 tank will enter operational service in 2016. With HVF Avadi looking at a production rate of 30 tanks a year, all 116 tanks will be delivered by 2020.
  • The Israeli ‘Trophy’ system is being considered for the Mk-2
