Avalanche traps about 150 Pakistani soldiers

They have dug all the way to the ground twice..but found nothing....so unfortunate.

The "ground" is a relative term in a glacial moraine. The best they can do is to locate the co-ordinates of the building's positions, and try to figure out the direction and magnitude of potential movement based on the avalanche direction and speed, and concentrate on those areas.

Just a thought on why they are not able to recover so far --

Knowing base camp co-ordinates may not be helpful at all ; Since it is very well possible that the entire base camp may have been wiped off the ground by the sheer force of avalance and may have been deposited elsewhere..Just like what would happen in Tsunami or Tornado..

In short the rescuers may not be digging at the right place at all.

Not sure if this was discussed earlier.

Base camp was supposed to be around 80ft under the snow. The rescuers dug over 100 ft in two places and found nothing.
That means the force of the avalanche was so great that it uprooted the buildings that were made to stand an avalanche!

By the way, are helicopters like MI-17 being used in the rescue operation? Has anyone got the flight schedule?

There is no schedule for military flights. Especially for flights like these. Mi 17 has been used at least once, but it depends on conditions as well.

Mi-17, Alouttee 3 and AS-350 (those I am confirmed). Others maybe used too... It's hard to fly in such weather conditions and altitude, not the mention that the air is weak in the region.

Yesterday they said that by now there will be 50 heavy machinery plants there......
Helicopters are not being used for heavy equipment transport..Its being done by land.

COMSATS INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECNOLOGY is a public private sector university in Pak and its team of professor and students joined hands with suparco to jointly carryout the rescue activity

It is not possible to hang a heavy load beneath a chopper in those areas as the air is thin.
