On December 8, 2012, at the 41st General Assembly of the European Olympic Committee in Rome, it was decided to hold the first ever European Games. The Assembly was attended by 49 National Olympic Committees. Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, has been awarded the rights to host the inaugural European Games in 2015.

Azerbaijan is getting more integrated into International and European organisation and society as a result of development in all fields in Azerbaijan. Europe does not give such events if you are ready in some respects not only for structural aspect. If we consider the neighbours around Azerbaijan and their situations, we can say that Azerbaijan has a credible position in International arena.

That is the proud we as brothers are sharing after all hard work Azerbaijan has made on her own.

Some info:

- The Budget: $1.25 billion,
-
Official brands in organisation: BP and Tissot,
- Venues for different events: 15 ( one of which is Baku Olympic Stadium with Fifa and UEFA elite stadium standarts)
- Games : 249 in 29 sports,
-Participaters: 6,000 athletes from 49 European countries,
-Accommodation for athletes: 1042 apartments with 7510 beds
-The Broadcaster: The International Sports Broadcasting (ISB),
-Visa obligation: NO

Kardeşlerimizi tebrik ederim.(Congrats to our brothers)

Lets hope that all those facilities will be used after the competition, otherwise its just a waste of money.

Well, the spent money is not just about sports venue.
1) There is a concept called "public diplomacy" in the modern politics. it means influencing the public of other countries and use it to expand relations in higher levels. Clearly, Azerbaijani government is very familiar with this concept. That's how we can understand their investing in such events. Now, Azerbaijan is gaining a face which is not just being an ex-soviet country, but is a country that is integrating into Europe and international arena, and conducting Eurovision, formula one, european games, ... can all be understood in this way. what Azerbaijan is spending for this events, is rewarded by multiple times.
2)These infrastructure are necessary for any decent country in international scale. They can be used to conduct other tournaments in different levels as well.
3)The facilities are usually used for multiple purposes after the event finishes. for example, host cities usually transfer housing to university dorms, venues to the venue of national teams, conference rooms to international conference rooms used for international conferences in any major, ...

1.) I'm well aware of that. But the European Games are pretty low level (still a start) and the only thing Eurovision has lead to in Germany is that people are now aware that there is a dictatorship in Azerbaijan and that free press and the freedom of thought are not welcome.

2.) Agree but what is it good for if its rotting after those games like in Athens?

3.) Lets hope so. Otherwise you spend billions just for a few reports in newspapers and the TV. You could have that cheaper ;)

That's why I am saying that conducting these games are important. before Euro-vision and such stuff, we were not even on the map for many people, or was considered as another Kazakhstan if you have seen the movie "Borat". Now, Azerbaijan's image is changing gradually, and has improved, IMO. We need to change that image.

Well, I doubt it. Azerbaijan requested to host olympics before, as well. I am sure our chance for hosting next olympics would be considerably better if we conduct this event in a decent way.

Well, I have traveled to some host cities of previous olympics, and they all have done the same thing. I doubt if it would be different in our case. Anyway, cheaper ways like investing in Athletico Madrid club with just 10-20 million euros was done as well, and it was a successful investment.
For me, it's just a path that we need to pass through it to have progress in future. it will need spending money, and lots of efforts, but it would really worth it ;)

many of the facilities are temporary , only the needed ones are permanent

The two-day programme will see 62 delegates from around Europe visit Baku 2015 venues and attend workshops for updates on all of the latestEuropean Games preparations, BEGOC's official website reports.

Several Baku 2015 directorates will make presentations to those attending, including senior staff from Sport, Transport, Press Operations, Broadcasting and Communications.

“The support and co-operation of those attending this Seminar will be vital to us in educating the continent about how exciting the inaugural European Games in Baku will be next summer, and also to help raise awareness of our work here in Azerbaijan.”

In total, more than 1,000 journalists from across the continent are expected to attend the Baku 2015 European Games along with communications officials from each country.

Mr Adrian Bassett, Director of Communications for the British Olympic Association, said: “This weekend is an extremely valuable opportunity to learn more about the European Games and understand exactly how Baku 2015 will operate during Games-time.

“For many nations, this will be their first time competing in Azerbaijan and so it is important to visit the country and be fully prepared for what will be a fantastic event for our athletes next summer.”

More than 6,000 athletes will compete over the 17 days of competition next year, with newspapers, websites, radio and TV stations all committed to covering the Games.

Mr William Louis-Marie, Baku 2015 Director of Communications, said: “It is very important for us to ensure the National Olympic Committees feel fully involved with Baku 2015, and we are working closely with them to make the first ever European Games a resounding success.

“The Seminar represents an important chance to ensure we are communicating effectively with the National Olympic Committees, their athletes, the media and the fans from across all of Europe.”

to people who say this is a waste and such
this is not just about building new stadiums ,
its also about other critical projects

for example :

Baku Olympic Stadium is being built on what was once contaminated land and the nearby lake
(Boyukshor ) which is highly contaminated is now going through the same process
as well as new roads and bridges are also U/C
