Bangladesh navy buys two Ruag Do 228NGs

By Greg Waldron

The Bangladesh navy has purchased two Ruag Aviation Do 228NG aircraft for maritime patrol and rescue missions.

The Do 228NGs will become the navy's first fixed-wing aircraft, said Ruag. The deal also includes crew training services and aircraft maintenance on-site in Bangladesh. Both aircraft are due for delivery in mid-2013.

Ruag said that the Do 228NG is a modernised version of the Do 228-212 that first flew in the 1980s. In the maritime patrol application the aircraft is useful for detecting oil slicks, performing border and fisheries patrol duties and conducting environmental research, it said.

Ruag will perform the final assembly of the aircraft and make customer-specific installations, such as radios and navigation aids, at its Oberpfaffenhofen factory near Munich, Germany.

Alexander Müller, Ruag's vice-president military aviation Germany, attributed the Bangladeshi selection of the Do 228NG to its "cost-effectiveness and ease of use".

The Bangladesh navy last year signed an order for two AgustaWestland AW109E Power helicopters.

That is correct. HAL produces the Dorniers in Kanpur for the IN and ICG plus a few for the IAF. With locally made maritime search radar, it has been found to be a very successful SRMR and MPA platform. They are flown all around the coast and have participated recently in a number of successful Anti-Piracy missions.

Care to explain?

By the way the source is not BD.

Explain what?

Popeye is not saying that India is building your Dorniers completely..but mere the fact that India license produces the aircraft.

The Non BD source that you are quoting does not mentions this...

The supplier of the structural components of the fuselage, wing unit and tail plane is Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) in Kanpur (India). This company has been building Dornier 228 aircraft under licence for the Indian market for many years now, and is RUAG’s most important partner in the Do 228 NG project. The new aircraft are finally assembled and fitted in the factory in Oberpfaffenhofen.
RUAG - Production Do 228NG

And mate..the above information is from Ruag website itself. So get over the Indian part of it and lets rather discuss on how these dornier's will help your forces and improve their capabilities.

Dornier has farmed out the Do-228 line to HAL long ago. The Engines come from Garrett. May be he is not clear about that.

Well seems they'll only be used for maritime petrol
and rescue objectives which seems unlikely.
For rescue missions the navy obviously would use
Augusta Helis.

Seems the aircraft can be configured to perform cargo
transportation thats all. Nothing special......

That was not the point, my Nokia is made in china
so is my HP, whats the big deal?

What are you talking about, man? Who wants to know about your Nokia, your HP, or your shoes. Where did they come from?
Why are you going around some bush?

The point is the deal was Between BD navy
and Ruag Aviation.

From Ruag website.

Following customers in Japan, Norway and Germany, the Bangladesh Navy has purchased two modern Do 228NG (New Generation) turboprop aircraft. The aircraft will be used for maritime air patrol and rescue mission along the countries’ coastline.

The two Do 228NGs are the first fixed wing aircraft to be purchased by the Bangladesh Navy for patrolling its coast line. For this purpose, both aircraft are being equipped with special equipment for maritime air patrol operations. This includes radio and navigation aid and other selected systems as well as rescue equipment.

Cost-effectiveness and ease of use seal the decision in Do 228NG’s favour

With the Do 228NG, RUAG Aviation has asserted itself against the competition. "The cost-effectiveness and, despite its sophisticated technology, ease of use sealed the decision in favour of the Do 228NG," enthuses Alexander Müller, Vice President Military Aviation Germany. In addition to the two aircraft, the contract includes comprehensive pilot and aircraft maintenance training for the Navy ground crew on location. Delivery of both aircraft is scheduled for early summer 2013.

The Do 228NG is a versatile turboprop aircraft. Alongside transporting up to 19 passengers, it can also be configured as a special mission version for various purposes including maritime air patrol. Thanks to the latest sensor technology, the aircraft is ideally suited to detecting oil slicks, controlling borders and fishing, and carrying out environmental research. The Do 228NG is a completely modernized and improved version of the Dornier 228-212, RUAG Aviation carries out final assembly, integration of customer-specific equipment and delivers the aircraft from its Oberpfaffenhofen facilities near Munich (Germany).

Guys chill...its nothing that serious we should bang our head on.

Can anyone provide the specifications of the Donier?

Its good to see that navy is developing its air-wing. Probably, these planes will be stationed in the forward air-base in Chittagong, keeping an eye on the maritime boundary. We had Agusta Westland before and were supposed to have Z-9 Harbins, which was supposed to come from the frigates we were supposed to buy from China.

Anyone has any update on that?
