Brazilian air force may buy f-18

Brazilian air force is said to be leaning towards the American F-18 Super Hornet aircraft in the selection of 36 fighter jets, according to media reports. A weekly magazine, Istoe, has published a document attributing to the commission in charge of analyzing the three aircraft (the Dassault Rafale and the Swedish Gripen), which concludes that the Boeing F-18 is best suited to air force requirements and notes several of its advantages in terms of price and benefits.

The document states that the least costly of the three jets being tendered are the Gripen of the Swedish firm Saab, the entire fleet being offered for $4.3 billion. The Boeing F-18 jets would cost Brazil about $5.4 billion for 36 aircraft whereas the French Rafale would cost a lot more at $8.2 billion.

According to the published document, Boeing has agreed to the technology transfer required by the Brazilian government to close the deal and has also offered to open a center for high technology in Brazil if it gets the contract.

Meanwhile, due to heavy budget cuts the government has suspended the tender process with defense officials saying that the final decision will be taken early next year.
 
if they are offering 8.2 billion $ thn it means india may cost 120 plane more thn 30 billion ......this is rubbish

Its the eternal "FX-2"... SU-35 is also another choice.
The Su-35 was eliminated in the evaluation along with amongst the Eurofighter. Rumors of its re-surface is just gossip tabloid-material. The main reason why the Su-35 won't be considered is because Venezuela already has 24 Su-30MK2 and are in discussions of buying additional planes (Su-30/35/50) to bolster its defense.

Well, at this stage, it's really for anyone to take home the victory.

Saab is able to provide a great industrial off-set, 100% tech transfer and would be able to offer the cheapest fighter out of the three both in initial costs and in operational costs. The fact that Switzerland insists on that the Gripen would give the most bang for the buck in replacing their F-5 Tigers is a big plus. Saab has also invested heavily in the Brazilian industry through opening a Center of Research and Innovation and letting Akaer produce parts for the Gripens even if Brazil wouldn't come to choose the Gripen. The negative parts about the Gripen is that it doesn't come in a naval version (even if Saab opened a research center in Britain) and that Sweden might not offer the same political effect as the other two.

France has had a close military cooperation with Brazil for a long time, and the biggest negative fact with the Rafale, which is "only" using french weapons, doesn't matter because Brazil already operates the Mirage 2000. Add the fact that that India just gave Dassault the order of the century (which might bring down prices and enhance Indian-Brazilian relations) and that they offer 100% technology transfer spiced up with offers of nuclear subs etc, and Dassault too is in a pretty good position. The negative parts are the hefty price and that Sweden and the U.S. already have got "dibs" on the two largest aircraft manufacturers in Brazil, Embraer and Akaer.

Boeing however has the advantage of having a HUGE poltical effect and a budget seemingly with no restraints. The Super Tucano deal for Afghanistan, the bolster of Embraers products on the United States civil plane market and Boeings aid in marketing the KC-390. The Super Hornet might be a bit too big and pricy to replace the F-5, but offers similar functions to the Gripen and the Rafale. Add a 100% tech transfer and the fact that the Super Hornet is a naval variant, and it's a great replacement.

I'm sort of hoping for a 2-variant mix. Buy the Gripen 39E for the Air Force to replace the Air Force F-5 Tigers, and the Super Hornet to replace the A-4 Skyhawks. They'd share the same engines and they'd get the benefits from a Hi-Lo mix and get the political/industrial benefits from both companies. Win/Win in every situation, except for Dassault.

Yes and no, Rusia is trying to go back in-game with the SU-35, still the main candidate was the Rafale, now the F-18 with NG following...
This is a never ending history, also Dilma Roussef already said in France the other day that the buy of 36 fighters is not longer a priority, so nothing will happen, as always.

For me what is really surprising is that some countries including Brazil have really huge Navies but their Air Force is really very small one don't what are they up to in these modern times ?

Rumors are just that, rumors. Russia can still try and pitch the Su-35 how much they want, but officials in the Brazilian air force have already stated that the comeback of the Su-35 would be very unlikely given Russias close ties with Venezuela. What if Brazil were to order the Su-35 and a few years later, Venezuela would order the PAK-FA or an even more advanced export version of the Su-35 to replace their F-16's? If a military conflict would break out, the FAB would have some big difficulties handling such a threat. And the F-X2 is important seeing as their Mirage 2000 fighters will be taken out of service next year and their F-5 fighters will be taken out of service in 2017. If Brazil wants to have an air force at all, a decision has to be made very soon in order for Brazil not to miss any industrial off-sets and tens of thousands of job-opertunities. The Air Force's F-5's and Navy's A-4's could already be rendered 'obsolete' against any developed south american air force, such as e.g. Venezuela with its Su-30MK2 and F-16 or Chile with its F-16MLU /Block 50/52+.

Well, wouldn't render its air force as small, especially not in comparison with their navy.

Brazil's decision has always swinging between Rafale and F-18SH, recently the asked for Indian evaluation report on Rafale.
 
There is no chance of a internal war on South America (Aside of Chile/Peru, but the things are cool atm, is unlikely that will ever escalate intro a war). Main threats are external UK is the top one, especially maintaining bases at strike distances based on escuses.

The Brazil FX-2 means a lot more that it may look like, what Brazil select for its FX-2 it will probably end up as the standart fighter for the Unasur.

It would not be a surprise if they went for the F-18 as the US has been applying significant political pressure for the F-18 sale so if true the Brazilians are only succumbing to this pressure. However post the Indian descion there has been a lot of chatter from Brazil wrt Rafale.

Well, that's what we in Europe said 1914, and again in 1936, and again since that. Times change and so does politics. Overestimating peace is dangerous, and all nations should have the capability to defend themselves. And I understand it's an infected matter in your country, but please leave the Falklands-conflict out of it.

Well, supposedly, all three contestants have been preferred in one way or another. The FAB (Brazilian Air Force) supposedly preferred the Saab's Gripen, Embraer preferred Boeings Super Hornet and the former president Lula de Silva preferred the Rafale. Everyone has their own advantages in their offers. Boeing gives the largest political punch by giving Embraer the possibility of entering the U.S. civil market aswell as helping Embraer market the KC-390 to counter LHM's C-130. Saab gives the most economical choice with a huge industrial off-set and being the cheapest fighter to buy and operate. Dassault also packs quite the political power behind their offer and too offers a good industrial off-set. It's for anyone to win really.
