North Korea Claims Successful Nuclear Weapons Test
CBS News Interactive: North Korea Threats
(AP) SEOUL, South Korea North Korea said Monday it has performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test. The country's official Korean Central News Agency said the test was performed successfully and there was no radioactive leakage from the site.

"The nuclear test is a historic event that brought happiness to the our military and people," KCNA said.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said the test was conducted at 10:36 a.m. (9:36 p.m. EDT Sunday) in Hwaderi near Kilju city, citing defense officials.

South Korean officials could not immediately confirm the report.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun convened an urgent meeting of security advisers over the issue, Yonhap reported.

The North said last week it would conduct a nuclear test as part of its deterrent against a possible U.S. invasion.

The director of South Korea's monitoring center that is watching for a test with sound and seismic detectors declined to immediately comment on the report. The U.S. Geological Survey said it had detected no seismic activity in North Korea, although it was not clear whether a blast would be strong enough for its sensors.

North Korea claims first nuclear weapon test

North Korea has claimed to carry out what its neighbours have long feared -- the test of a nuclear weapon.

"The nuclear test is a historic event that brought happiness to our military and people," said a quote carried Monday by the Korean Central News Agency, the communist state's official agency.

The agency said there had been no radioactive leakage from the test site.

Yonhap, the South Korean news agency, reported that South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun is huddling with his security advisers to plan a response.

However, the U.S. Geological Survey said it hasn't detected any seismic activity on the Korean peninsula in the past 48 hours.

The North had been threatening such a test as part of its deterrent against what it claims is a possible U.S. invasion. The U.S. has said it has no plans to invade the country it once called part of an "axis of evil."

The United States, South Korea, Japan and China have all warned North Korea, a secretive communist state, against the test.

The UN Security Council added its voice to the mix on Friday.

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea carried out an underground nuclear test on Monday, North Korea's Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

"Our science research section has safely and successfully conducted an underground nuclear test on October 9," it said.

It added that there was no leak or danger from the test.

South Korea's presidential Blue House said a tremor had been detected in North Korea on Monday.

Now what? North Korea facing economic sanctions and political pressure? Nothing more. They can take that.

There are know reports that top japanese, south korean, and US military advisers are having meeting. The South Korean PM himself is currently holding an emergency meeting.

The US wont dare attack NK or else you can say bye bye to Los angela's, san farsisco, las vegas, etc...

North is safe. There missiles can reach Japan and USA. They can sleep peacefully now.
Kashif

its a great news for all the nations that stands up to the U.S.A and a very bad and humiliating diplomatic and foreign policy defeat for U.S.A in fact its a diplomatic debacale for the american policy makers with the scandle involving ex congressmen mark foley which was giving the republicans an bad enough tough time domesticaly and on top of that, as of now with the north korean's testing a nuclear bomb has put the entire republican establishment in a very tight position coz of its failed foriegn policy .

:) Great news i wonder when Iran going to test :) .

Now sanction NK or not they had done it.

Please kaiser,
They just tested one. They have tp put that on a missile and then the missile has to travel '000s of km.

To get this all working it takes time.

If NK is attacked now with the intention of destroying their infra alone, the US led coalation is quite capable of doing it.

After the iraqi and afghan adventure they wont even think abt occupation.

That would be another compelling reason for US,SK and Japan to attack.

They tested only one, if they did at all. This probabley means that NK wants the worl to know that they are very well capabale of having nukes, and will make them. I think this might mean a bit more aid for NK.

There are know reports that NK might be preparing for a second nuclear test in the manner of which Pakistan and India did in 1998. This might lead to Japan and SK starting up its nuclear program

Remember people, scientist estimate the if within one month of starting nuclear program japan could have as high as 3-20 nukes

I think Bush & Co would rather keep this under wraps until after AFTER the election. They've been trying to push the peace and prosperity thing too much to be gambling on an oil price jump and a subsequent stock market fall.

..."North Korea must choose either to have a future or to have nuclear weapons "but it cannot have them both", top US negotiator Christopher Hill said."... (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5408246.stm?ls )

Bush will downplay a military solution , he has no other choice - his party and the country's resources cannot handle the extra burden now.

Webby,
More economic santions are not going to break the regime. Aid to Pyongyang is already cut to a minimum since July when she tested LRBM.
In late nineties famine killed over two million koreans, this time its going to get worse I'm affraid.

All have denounced the test but UNSC has yet to condemn it.
Coming 72 hours will be interesting.

Wrong!
Range remains untested and best estimates are that the missile could reach points in Alaska and no further.
Btw, they've only tested it once!

Does North Korea have an atomic reactor? I mean I wouldn't be surprised if the US took the military route on this one. It would have the backing of every one in the region. Maybe not an Iraq like invasion but, a full fledge air assault to take out everything that is significant in military numbers.

I second that.
Mating the nuke with a missile is a very difficult process, even for China it took years to accomplish that.
Testing is one thing deploying it is another.

USA wouldn't even need NATO for that, it has bases in Japan and South Korea.
All the nuclear facilities are well known, with precission guided missiles US forces could destroy most in a single wave.
Cluster bombs will do the rest.
Any intimidation on their part would be suesidal for Nort Korea.

After the iraqi and afghan adventure they wont even think abt occupation.
Bull,
Kim is not interested in conquerring or occupying South Korea, the nuke is meant to defend itself from USA.
After 9/11 the bilateral relations have gone worse, mostly because of intimidation made by Bush.
NK was called as Axe of Evil before they went to Iraq and Afghanistan.
This kind of language or intimidation isn't good for any nation including North Korea.
