Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau began a week-long state visit to India on Saturday night, but social media users were quick to point out the frosty reception he has received from the Indian prime minister
.
Trudeau and his family were welcomed on the tarmac, not by the leader of the world’s largest democracy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but by Indian Minister of State for agriculture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. For context, Modi has personally greeted leaders from the US, the UAE, and Israel on their respective state visits.

However, one user highlighted that this may not be that unusual, and that diplomatic protocol doesn’t necessarily call for such an official welcome.

Except obama, Israeli PM and UAE crown prince broke protocol and personally greeted indian PM at the airport during his visit to the respective countries. Nothing unusual if he reciprocated it back by personally receiving them.#Trudeau #JustinTrudeau

Trudeau’s visit is ostensibly aimed at improving ties between the two nations, with a particular emphasis on trade, given that they exchange $8 billion of goods a year. Trade between the two countries has doubled in the last 10 years, but India’s Foreign Ministry says that figure still “does not reflect [their] true potential.”

Looking at the gleeful #Trudeau family at #TajMahal and a deeper look at his agenda in India, it looks more like a nice week long #familyvacation than an official visit, thats what you get for supporting #Khalistan #TrudeauInIndia @TarekFatah @sushantsareen @MakrandParanspe

Trudeau is lucky he didn’t have to call Uber #KhalistanlovingPM #TrudeauInIndia https://twitter.com/vikasswarup/status/964870423446827008 …

It also marks the Canadian PM’s first visit to India since taking office in 2015, despite the fact that 1.4 million Indians currently reside in Canada, making up roughly three percent of the country’s total population. Trudeau, accompanied by Sikh members of his cabinet, is scheduled to meet Modi in his home state of Gujarat on Monday to discuss issues such as civil nuclear cooperation, space, defense, energy, and education. However, allegations have been leveled against members of the Canadian cabinet of supporting violent separatists in India.

#Trudeau seems to be viewed in #India with about the same enthusiasm as malarian mosquito

#Trudeau deserves this welcome. His and his parties views on Punjab/ Khalistan are wrong and provocative. @narendramodi shouldn’t even be meeting him... @CandiceMalcolm https://twitter.com/candicemalcolm/status/965145545860726785 …

“There seems to be evidence that there are Khalistani sympathizers in Trudeau's cabinet,” Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh told Outlook India magazine earlier this month, as cited by The National Post. Both Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan and Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi, two of four Sikhs in Trudeau’s cabinet, vehemently denied the allegations. Sikh separatists have pushed for an independent state for decades, which will place Trudeau in an awkward position during his visit to the Golden Temple, the holiest site in Sikhism, and the scene of a massacre of Sikh separatists in 1984.

Modi visited Canada in 2015 and gave a speech to 10,000 members of the Indian diaspora in Toronto.

Did Trudeau get snubbed in India? Canadian PM arrives with the family for week of talks to improve the two countries' relationship... only for Indian PM to send a junior minister to meet them

  • Trudeau touched down in New Delhi on Saturday night with his wife Sophie and their three children
  • His three-year-old son Hadrien stole the show as he struggled with a large bouquet of flowers
  • Trudeaus were met by a junior agriculture minister and not the PM - a move considered by some as a snub
  • It is the start of a week-long visit during which he will have talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi
  • They are expected to discuss how they can improve relations between their two countries
  • Certain India officials believe Canada has been too comfortable with Sikh separatists who want an independent Punjab carved out of northwestern India
  • Despite the 1.4million Indians living in Canada, Trudeau has never visited while in office
  • The country's trade with India on a yearly basis is only around 8 billion Canadian dollars

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took his charm offensive to New Delhi on Saturday, arriving in India with his photogenic family for a week of talks with the country's leader.

Things didn't get off to a great start though, with Twitter commentators quick to point out that the country's PM Narendra Modi failed to meet them at the airport and instead sent a junior agriculture minister.

It was a far cry from when Obama and leaders of Israel and UAE made the trip to the world's largest democracy with Modi patiently waiting for them on the tarmac.

The trip signals Trudeau's intention to improve Canada's relationship with India amid allegations from Indian officials that Canada has been too comfortable with Sikh separatists who want an independent Punjab carved out of northwestern India.

While it’s long been a matter of contention between the two countries, the fact Trudeau has a large contingent of Sikhs in his cabinet, all of whom are traveling with him, may be adding to the tension.

The two countries also trade meagerly, exchanging around $8billion of goods per year, and Trudeau has not been to India since he took office despite the 1.4million Indians who live in Canada.

On Saturday night, he started by bowing his head and clasping his hands in respect while disembarking his aircraft.

Laying on the charm: Justin Trudeau arrived in New Delhi on Saturday night with his wife Sophie and their three children, three-year-old Hadrien, nine-year-old Ella-Grace and 10-year-old Xavier

The family received a warm welcome from their hosts and reciprocated with keen waves and wide smiles as they disembarked their plane

hey bounded down the steps to greet crowds who had waited.

Hadrien, who was dressed sweetly in a denim button down, stole the show as he struggled with a large bouquet of flowers that was given to the family by someone in the crowd

His father laughed and smiled as they made their way slowly as a family to a waiting car to be whisked away.

Trudeau will spend the week talking with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about how they can boost their relationship.

They will focus talks on civil nuclear cooperation, space, defense, energy and education.

During his visit, Trudeau will meet with top business leaders in Mumbai and visit key Indian monuments, including the Taj Mahal in Agra, the Golden Temple in Amritsar and the Jama Masjid in New Delhi.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi greets Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan after the prince arrived at an air force base in New Delhi on February 10, 2016

At Davos last month, while President Donald Trump supported new tariffs on imports, Trudeau and Modi came out forcefully against a drift toward protectionism in the global economy.

In 2017, two-way merchandise trade between Canada and India amounted to $8.4 billion, split equally between exports to and imports from India, according to Indian media.

Canada mainly imports pearls, organic chemicals, pharmaceutical products, textiles, bicycles and motorcycles from India.

It exports vegetables, paper, fertilizers, wood pulp, iron and steel and precious stones to India.

Before his talks with Modi begin, he will visit the famous Taj Mahal with his family on Sunday

He will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi (right) on Monday. Modi is pictured on Saturday talking with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani

He is still busy finishing talks with and signing agreements with Iran's President Rouhani. Leaders of the world have to get used to the fact that there is a finite amount of time Modi can spend greeting and talking. He will be there to sign all agreements reached with Canada. Meanwhile Tredeau and his family can talk with ministers and state heads. Meanwhile he can do a bit of sightseeing.

No matter the excuse, Canadians aren't going to be happy about this, especially Indian Canadians. As a Pakistani, this warms my heart, because anything that messes with Indian foreign relations is funny. As a Canadian, I'm livid because my PM got snubbed by a nation that my nation has given a lot of importance to.

If they say anything against pakistan india would give them importance too

But Modi is famous for breaking protocols,

Insult to Canada and all Canadians PM received by unknown Agri Minister....

Why Canada should have any issue with it? i am sure balance of trade is in favour of bharat as with US, so its bharati loss if they don't warmly receive the guest.
