NEW DELHI: India faces a greater threat from China than Pakistan because New Delhi knows little about Beijing’s combat capabilities, India’s air force chief told a newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.

The world’s two most populous nations fought a brief but brutal war over their 3,500 km (Himalayan border in 1962, and both sides claim the other is occupying big but largely uninhabited chunks of their territory.

India has also been pursuing closer relations with the United States, something that worries China.

China has a standing army almost three times the size of Pakistan’s, according to official figures and defence industry estimates, but it is the lack of knowledge about China’s military that concerned Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major.

‘We know very little about the actual capabilities of China, their combat edge or how professional their military is,’ Major told the Hindustan Times newspaper.

‘They are certainly a greater threat.’

Although India and China have signed a treaty to maintain ‘peace and tranquillity’ along their disputed frontier and agreed to find a political solution to the row, talks have hardly made progress even as their business ties boom.

India blames the lack of progress on China’s claim over the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, in particular over its Buddhist enclave of Tawang. New Delhi says it cannot part with populated areas to settle the border dispute.

Major said the Indian air force was upgrading about five airbases, of which two would operate Russian Su-30 MKI fighters.

china has 2 trillion and its just sitting around they cant really use it, also they're EXTREMELY worried about making a loss on them. also more jobs have been lost to china than to the slumdogs. today china's economy is in VERY bad shape it only grew 6% because of a MASSIVE 600 billion stimulus (18% of their gdp) recession started here and we only spent 750 billion (5% of gdp). while India's economy grew 5.8% with less than 10 billion in stimulus. oh and did i tell u... most of the pirated windows copies are made in CHINA!

the technically advanced thing... dont wanna start argument.

Once an Indian admiral said(forget the name) "To name an enemy is like making one". Its not so wise for an Indian ACM to call China as a threat specially when no tensions have been seen on Sino-Indian border as we have seen it on Indo-Pak border.
Pakistan its understandable but China i don't get it.

^^China is a threat, but I doubt China would ever attack, India should nonetheless be prepared. As long as an attack it isn't worthwhile we'll be fine. But I agree with you Icecold, we really should turn down the rhetoric, if there is a threat we should quietly address it and not make public statements like this one they will only make things worse.

the main issue is India is the only country they have not had border dispute settled with. as such, as Chinese capabilities coupled with its political clout backed by strong economic one expands, this issue is bound to crop up.

the string of pearls policy is directed at ensuring its own supremacyof seas, something Indians will not allow. As it is, as of today, IN is strongest navy after Japan even in South China sea, and its not long before chinese break that supremacy.

Look at the number of Tibetans who Fled the "great people's republic of cheena" to India.Indians save tibetans from slaughter under the hands of Chinese Military.

China Can Attack India.Once they did and they will.India and China are the Only growing economy in this part of Asia.all other small nations like pakistan, bangladesh, sri lanka are all facing calamity from internal war or from jehadis .

That's true. China is indeed a bigger threat than Pakistan. But do they need to state the obvious & invite unwanted attention? Yes. Becaus our netas are often sleeping to this fact. Many only indulge in Pak bashing & come from semi-literate backgrounds at best so their mentality is only anti-pakistan which isn't correct since Chinese are THE threat. Pakistan can be contained in case of hostilties, but the Chinese, I'm not sure, yet.

AFAIK Chinese internally identify themselves as a different race compared to india or others.this race factor also is said to have some reason.China would like to annexe north east(already trying arunachal pradesh) to Japan to bring a great mongoloid country. That's the Basic Idea they have -apart from Communism.

Perhaps the issue may or may not crop up however with statement like these, it is bound to crop up. My point was that India may prepare itself for the unseen, it does not need to highlight the issue as of yet.

Ice Cold

The war has begun long back, the stakes only higher this time.

Sugar sector they tried to enter once and also Dokala-Chumbi axis in east sikkim. they were given a show of force. fire was exchanged with no casualties on either side but message sent that Indians are willing to militarily engage them there in areas which India considers out of bounds for all.

As an offshoot something interesting

Chinese passing off fake drugs as ?Made in India? - India Business - Business - The Times of India

serves to underscore that the next war will be over resources or control thereof ..... as usual
