China appears to have launched its first Type 054B guided missile frigate – a bigger, more advanced version of the Type 054A warship now in service.

Photos from a state-owned Shanghai naval shipbuilder circulating on Chinese social media platforms suggested that the next-generation vessel had not only adopted the advanced phased radar systems of the last Type 054A batch but also the stealth mast of the Type 055 destroyer – China’s most powerful ship of its kind.

The new vessel entered a pool at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a Shanghai-based subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), on Saturday, according to a photo posted on the Sina Weibo microblogging site.

The CSSC has yet to announce a launch date for the 054B, even though another photo taken on Sunday showed the frigate had been decorated with many red flags suggestive of the Chinese national flag, suggesting the authorities may be set to organise a formal ceremony.

Construction work on another Type 054B vessel is also believed to be nearing completion at Guangzhou’s Huangpu-Wenchong Shipyard, another CSSC subsidiary.

Photos posted by Chinese military enthusiasts last month showed the hull of the warship being rolled out from a dry dock, ready for launch into a pool.

“It seems like shipbuilders in Shanghai and Guangzhou are competing to launch the first Type 054B frigate,” Lu Li-shih, a former instructor at Taiwan’s Naval Academy in Kaohsiung, said.

The hull of the Type 054B is about 147 metres (482 feet) long and 18 metres wide, with an estimated displacement of about 6,000 tonnes, according to information posted by former US submariner Tom Shugart on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

With an extra 2,000 tonnage of displacement compared to the 054A, the 054B might be powered by an integrated electric propulsion (IEP) system developed by a team led by the PLA’s top naval power engineer, Rear Admiral Ma Weiming, Lu said.

The system would give the vessel more room to test new and advanced ship-borne weapon systems.

“The ultimate goal of using the IEP system is to equip the warship with high-power weapon systems like coil guns,” Lu said.

“The new frigate also [appears to have] adopted the advanced active towed sonar technology used by the Type 055 for anti-submarine capability, hinting that it might be an escort vessel of the PLA’s Type 075 amphibious assault ship,” he added.

Beijing-based naval expert Li Jie was of the same view as Lu, and said the new warship could decrease the operational costs of the PLA Navy.

“The operational cost for the Type 055 destroyer is very high, because of its advanced design,” Li said, referring to the 12,000-tonne giant warship regarded as second in power only to the US Navy’s Zumwalt-class stealth vessel.

“Bigger propulsion power means the Type 054B can sail further afield, while its better anti-submarine capability means it could replace the Type 055 as a mini destroyer to protect the Type 075 to form a small strike group for a mission in high seas.”

Shugart’s estimate, based on satellite images of the Shanghai shipyard, put the new vessel at more than 10 metres longer than the Type 054A.

“The longer deck is designed to load Z-20 anti-submarine helicopters or drones,” Lu said.

“The Type 054B may play a role as a key partner of the Type 075 in a possible war over Taiwan.”

Zhou Chenming, a researcher at the Yuan Wang military science and technology think tank in Beijing, said the Type 054A is powered by diesel engines and cannot keep pace with China’s most advanced warships in aircraft carrier groups.

Only sea trials will prove whether the upgraded version will achieve the desired results, “especially relating to the IEP propulsion system”, but this will take time, Zhou said.

However, he dismissed online speculation about plans to build up to 18 Type 054B frigates.

“The PLA navy will only order more Type 054B vessels after everything goes smoothly [in the trials].”

China Navy launches new Type 054B frigate in Shanghai

Naval News August 2023 Navy Forces Maritime Defense IndustryPOSTED ON MONDAY, 28 AUGUST 2023 14:51

According to information published by 163.com on August 28, 2023, Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding launched the first Chinese PLA Navy's Type 054B frigate in Shanghai.

The Type 054B frigate, measuring 147 meters in length and 18.5 meters in width with a displacement of around 6,000 tons, is distinguished by its fully electric propulsion system.

This system enhances the vessel's power conversion efficiency, reduces energy consumption, and subsequently improves its navigational performance and combat power. This innovation places the Type 054B among a few frigates worldwide utilizing a fully electric propulsion system.

The ship is equipped with a dual-face active phased array radar system. Combined with the integrated RF mast technology, identical to that on the Type 055 destroyer, it enhances the ship's air situational awareness.

With this radar support, the frigate's air defense capability is expected to match or even surpass the Type 052C destroyer, making it comparable to leading European destroyers like the Type 45 and the "Horizon" class.

In terms of weaponry, the Type 054B's primary armaments are similar to the Type 054A, including a 32-cell vertical launch system that can flexibly accommodate HQ-16 long-range air defense missiles and Yu-8 rocket-assisted torpedoes.

The frigate is also armed with two quadruple Eagle Strike 83 anti-ship missile launchers, a close-in weapon system, and an HQ-10 short-range air defense system.

The Type 054B might be fitted with a new 100mm main gun, which offers clear advantages over the conventional 76mm gun in terms of range and power.

This enhancement allows the Type 054B to better execute sea and shore bombardment missions, amplifying its combat prowess and diversified strike capabilities.

They will certainly be up with Usa navy very soon. I would say they are already there. Usa has a offensive navy force but China is on similar level as being an defensive naval force. Soon they will concentrate on navy aviation, better submarines, a few more aircraft carriers and they can challenge the Usa. The only lacking aspect is Usa has allies such as India, Japan, S Korea, Australia, Europe whilst China is behind. They don't really have close military, defence and economic relations except for a few nations.

If not for global domination, a country doesn't need these many "allies". besides, if China and Russia can form some kind of military alliance, Russia can carry more weight than all the US allies combined.

I agree. For asia China is fine, noone can really challenge them militarily but if China wants to expand their trade and economic relations to continue their growth then they will have no choice but to establish close military treaties with friendly nations, this is because the rivals of China will destabilise or even invade these nations to harm Chinese economic interests.

Russia now is fighting the whole west alone, all by itself, pretty imprssive, China still remains its neutral position, but if push comes to shove, China may upgrade its partnership with Russia.

Photos that appeared recently on social media provide our best view so far of the first of China’s new Type 054B frigates. With a host of advanced features, the next-generation warship continues a rapid program of expansion for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy, or PLAN, with experts predicting that the frigate could become one of that service’s most important vessels in the future.

The latest set of photos to emerge show the first-of-class Type 054B, which is apparently yet to be named, at Hudong Shipyard in Shanghai. The vessel appears almost complete, with red pennant flags arrayed along its length, as is customary for an official launch ceremony. It’s unclear when the photos were taken, but as of August 27, there were unconfirmed reports that the warship had been officially launched.

Regardless of the exact status of this particular vessel, the photos do give a very good idea of the appearance of this warship and shed light on many of its features, although there are many details that remain to be confirmed.

The War Zone spoke to Alex Luck, a journalist who closely follows the PLAN, and the Type 054B in particular, for this thoughts on the new photos.

“So far, what we can see is that a 32-cell vertical launch system [VLS] is installed on the bow,” Luck explained. However, as he pointed out, we will need to wait for better imagery to understand what kind of VLS is actually fitted. It could be the so-called universal vertical launch system, or UVLS that’s found on the Type 055 and Type 052D destroyers, and which uses both hot- and cold-launched missiles. Another option is the VLS used by the preceding Type 054A frigate, which can launch HQ-16 surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) and Yu-8 rocket-assisted torpedoes.

Previous photos of the Type 054B suggested it was fitted with a 100mm main gun, in a change over the Type 054A, which is armed with a 76mm gun. The change of gun is now confirmed, although there remain questions here, too. “There are some visual similarities to the existing H/PJ-87 — itself a licensed development of the Creusot-Loire 100mm Compact — that equipped the sole two Type 054 frigates and various older destroyers, but it’s unclear what the exact relationship is between the new gun now seen and the older model,” Luck explained.

With longer-range air defense served by SAMs launched from the VLS, destruction of airborne targets at closer ranges is handled by two different close-in weapons systems (CIWS). An H/PJ-11 11-barrel 30mm Gatling gun can be seen in front of the bridge, while an HQ-10 SAM launcher is located on the single hangar. These weapons are roughly similar to the U.S.-Mk 15 Phalanx and the RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) arrangement seen on U.S. and some allied ships.

For anti-surface warfare, it might be expected that we would see angled launchers for one of the many Chinese anti-ship missiles (AShM) located amidships on the Type 054B. Currently, however, these are absent.

“The fact that [anti-ship missile launchers] have not been fitted before the launch of the Type 054Bis cause for some speculation that there is a second VLS in that position,” Luck assesses. Another set of VLS cells in this location would have a precedent on the Type 052D and Type 055. Once again, however, we need to wait for better imagery for confirmation of whether more VLS cells are installed. In the meantime, “the majority view assumes slanted AShM launchers instead,” Luck explained.

The sensor suite of the Type 054B is likely also not fully installed, although the primary radar is a prominent, double-sided, rotating active electronically scanned array (AESA) on the main mast.

As expected, the frigate will carry a bow sonar, and the vessel also has fittings for a variable-depth sonar (VDS) and a towed-array sonar (TAS) at the stern.

Other equipment includes box-like Type 726 launchers, one of which is mounted on either side of the aft section of the superstructure. These 24-cell launchers can reportedly be loaded with flares, cartridges full of radar-blinding chaff, active decoys equipped with small radio-frequency jammers, and even anti-submarine rockets armed with small depth charges. As such, these launchers can provide protection against incoming anti-ship missiles, but can also be used to engage submarines, hostile torpedoes, and combat divers.

At this early stage, there has been no evidence of aviation trials, which would not be expected until after the warship goes to sea. However, it is assumed that the Type 054B will host the Z-20F, a multirole maritime helicopter that has much in common with the U.S. SH-60 Seahawk, including a very similar overall appearance. The Z-20 would provide a critical part of the Type 054B’s anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities but would also undertake utility missions and likely also anti-surface warfare.

Bearing in mind the Chinese military’s growing interest in uncrewed platforms, it would also not be a surprise if the Type 054B class also eventually operates some kind of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drone, like the type that has already conducted trials on the aircraft carrier Shandong, as you can read about here.

Finally, the signature-reduction features built into the Type 054A design should be noted. The vessel has a stealthy-looking design that is clearly intended to reduce radar cross section, through measures such as a clean superstructure and overall shaping. In this respect, the Chinese warship can be compared with the French-designed Aquitaine class frigate, which adopts similar signature-reduction principles.

As for the role of the Type 054B, Luck predicts that the new class will effectively be a continuation of the previous Type 054A. That means it will primarily perform ASW, “with a robust anti-air warfare and ASuW role as secondary, general-purpose objectives.” Luck notes, however, that the warship’s exact capabilities in the anti-air warfare and ASuW roles will require a final confirmation of the types of weapons and launchers that are actually installed.

Either way, Luck assumes that, as an escort, the Type 054B’s primary competency will come in the shape of improved ASW compared to the Type 054A, likely including superior acoustic performance (quieting measures) when operating in that role.

It is also interesting to compare the Chinese approach in designing the Type 054B with the U.S. Navy’s own Constellation class frigate. Although this number could grow, the Navy currently plans to build 20 of these hulls, which are larger than the Type 054B, at 7,291 tons and 496 feet long. While the U.S. warships are described as being multi-purpose, the project manager has said the Constellation is “primarily an ASW platform.”

The scale of the Type 054B program remains unclear for now, although production is known to be underway at two locations: Hudong Shipyard in Shanghai and Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard in Guangzhou. Construction of a second Type 054B is already well underway at Guangzhou, with launch expected before the end of the year.

Based on the production run of the preceding subclass, it could well be prolific, although it may well take time to approach the 40 or more examples of the Type 054A that have been built so far, at the same two shipyards. At the same time, due to advances in munitions and sensors capabilities, the potential for a frigate of this kind to overlap with the some of the capabilities of a destroyer are clear, taking pressure off those higher-end assets.

AA1fTEXO.img

Modified versions of the Type 054A have also been completed for export and the Type 054B may well also be an attractive proposition for foreign customers, too. At the same time, the Type 054A hull was adapted as the Type 818 used by the Chinese Coast Guard and it’s possible that a modification of the Type 054B, with its larger dimensions, might also be of interest to the expanding and increasingly capable Coast Guard fleet.

An unclassified graphic published in 2022 showing the full breadth of Chinese ‘naval’ forces beyond just the PLAN. Office of Naval Intelligence

Indeed, the size difference between the Type 054A and the Type 054B is such that there were previous suggestions that it might be designated Type 057, representing an all-new design rather than a continuation.

Overall, the Type 054B appears to be a major advance over the Type 054A, even though we can’t be sure exactly what all its weapons and sensors fit will consist of. However, the new vessel is significant larger, offering considerable scope to add new capabilities at a later stage.

So far, only estimated data is available, suggesting that the Type 054B is around 480 feet long, compared to 440 feet for the Type 054A, and with a displacement of around 6,000 tons, compared to less than 4,000 tons for the Type 054A. The Type 054B is also notably wider than its predecessor, with a beam that’s closer to that of the Type 052 destroyer.

While many more details of the Type 054B are still to emerge, the design is clearly an upgrade of the prolific Type 054A. Those two classes, as well as the Type 056A corvette, look set to eventually constitute a highly versatile surface fleet that will be suitable for a wide range of missions, both around the coasts of mainland China and Taiwan, but also for projecting maritime power further out into the strategic South China Sea, the greater Pacific, Indian Ocean, and beyond.

With the prospect of another major production run, the Type 054B will also likely be a factor in what the U.S. Navy has identified as a huge disparity between Chinese and U.S. capacity to build new naval vessels and total naval force sizes. As The War Zone recently reported, the Office of Naval Intelligence considers that Chinese shipbuilders are more than 200 times more capable of producing surface warships and submarines.

The chart below gives at least a basic idea of just how much the PLAN surface combatant fleet has expanded in the space of just 10 years:

Combining quality and increasing quantity, the Type 054B could therefore be seen as another indicator of the growing and worrisome gap in fleet sizes between China and the United States, as well as being symbolic of Beijing’s expanding naval capabilities at a technical level.

China reportedly launched the first hull of its new-generation frigate, allegedly designated the Type 054B, in Shanghai last week, with observers expecting it to be an advanced but also cost-effective versatile vessel for far sea operations.

Photos emerged on social media show that the first Type 054B has been launched at Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai, US-based news website The Drive reported on Monday.

Calling the frigate one of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy’s most important future vessels, The Drive said the Type 054B is likely a continuation of the previous Type 054A, as it is expected to primarily perform anti-submarine warfare mission with anti-air warfare and anti-surface warfare roles as secondary, general-purpose objectives.

It will likely host the shipborne version of the Z-20 helicopter, which would provide a critical part of the frigate’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities, the report said.

Compared with its predecessor, the Type 054B is larger, measuring about 147 meters in length and 18.5 meters in width with a displacement of around 6,000 tons, Navy Recognition, a dedicated naval news website, reported on Monday.

The new frigate is equipped with a dual-face active phased array radar system plus an integrated radio frequency mast similar to that on the Type 055 destroyer, Navy Recognition said, noting that this enhances the ship's air situational awareness and air defense capability.

Similar to the Type 054A, the Type 054B likely has a 32-cell vertical launch system that can accommodate HQ-16 long-range air defense missiles and Yu-8 rocket-assisted torpedoes, as well as two quadruple YJ-83 anti-ship missile launchers, according to Navy Recognition.

Instead of two 1130 close-in weapon systems equipped by the Type 054A, the Type 054B is armed with only one close-in weapon system, but is added with an HQ-10 short-range air defense missile system, the report said.

Another major change is that the Type 054B is seemingly fitted with a new 100mm main gun, replacing the Type 054A’s 76mm main gun and offering more range and power. This enhancement allows the Type 054B to better execute sea and shore bombardment missions, amplifying its combat prowess and diversified strike capabilities, Navy Recognition said.

Navy Recognition among other overseas media reports suggested that the Type 054B is likely equipped with a fully electric propulsion system.

China has not officially announced the launch of the new frigate or its details, including its name and capabilities.

It is normal that China develops new vessels amid technological developments and as its navy make strides toward becoming a blue-water navy, a Chinese military expert who requested anonymity told the Global Times on Tuesday.

Overseas media reports might not be accurate, but more details could emerge as the ship would eventually enter service, the expert said.

A far sea-operable frigate is generally characterized by its versatility, reliability, cost efficiency and comfortability, the expert said, stressing that not all advanced and expensive equipment should be hoarded on a frigate when destroyers are available.

Another hull of the Type 054B is under construction at Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard in Guangzhou, The Drive reported.

The new Type 054B frigate could be mass produced just like the Type 054A frigate and the Type 052D destroyer, as they are expected to accompany aircraft carriers, amphibious ships and destroyers in far sea voyages, analysts said.

Well, that's a very generous assumption to China.

The problem is, and something OP @beijingwalker will not tell you is that. China have its limits on Navy, because that's depends on the size of the coastline.

Setting aside whether or not Chinese Naval Tech is on par with the west (I can't say as there are no combat record of Chinese Navy) the major and probably the most serious problem is China do not have a collective defense structure, because China have no peer allies. Maybe Russia will back up the Chinese but in case you are wondering, most Russian naval asset are ties to the west near the Med, Black Sea, the Baltics and the Altantic Ocean, Russian pacific fleet virtually non-existence.

Now going back to the coastline, China have just 1 coastline without many outlying islands, which mean there are only limited space to build port. Traditionally making China a inferior on developing a Navy, because you can build however or whatever ship you want, but you have to have a home port to support them, otherwise it won't work, and in this case, you are talking about 83 US naval station vs 53 Chinese Navy port. And that's before we count US overseas port, in US territories (like Guam, Puerto Rico) or US Naval Base in foreign country (like Rota, Spain, Sasebo, Japan and so on). Just because the US does not need a big fleet in peace time, does not mean they don't have a surge capacity, on the other hand, US allies all have room to surge in time of emergency, which mean there are more possibility of growth to US and its allies than China in this sense.

The Chinese Naval district is separated into 4 fleet and the US 7 fleet (another 3 fleet can be mustered by reactivating Ready Reserve Fleet and US Coast Guard asset. Which mean Chinese number is always going to be outnumber by the US. Because once you build and staff all 4 fleet, then you are done, unless you can somehow start servicing ship inland, you can't build anymore even if you have resource and money to build them.

That is the major Achillies heels for Chinese Navy
