Interesting that you mention drone in this topic, cos in fact long range artillery + scout drone is a standard combo for artillery brigades. Recently an artillery brigade of the 71st Army Corp (71集团军) was spotted using new FX-500 (锐鹰; Sky Saker) hi-speed turbojet scout/recon UAV, replacing the widely-used decades-old ASN-206 series.

FX-500 can travel at 800 km/h, operating ceiling at 9000 m. Various mission payloads such as GPS+INS combined nav, TV recon, forward-looking IR reco, laser illuminator, synthetic aperture radar, digital camera and data transmission gear, etc. Induction of new FX-500 will greatly enhance overall combat capability of long range artillery units.

Unlike conventional small to medium calibre rockets that follow fixed ballistic trajectories, China's large calibre long range rockets of above 300mm are guided rocket that can be maneuver towards targets pin point by scout drones like FX-500. A small target like bunker or a radar can be hit precisely.

They are designed to hit the military positions on the east coast of Taiwan island and beyond.

SR5 is an export product (and designation). There is another one used by PLA with much larger calibre, the modular PCL-191 can use 370mm guided rockets at range 350 km, or 750mm Fire Dragon 480 ballistic missile at range of 500 km. These are deployed along China-India border, and are expected to use FX-500 scout/recon drone as well (instead of old ASN-206). The Army artillery brigades can cover enough strike depth in their theater as well as can advance their position with ground troops, relieving burden of PLAAF & PLARF which can focus on deep strike missions.
