What's new

China's Aircraft Carrier started Sea Trials today!

If seal trial could be finished by the end of the year, it's possible that IOC could be achieved by early 2013 and FOC by 2018.

Leaked photo of varyag at 2:30 AM the day she went out for her first test trial. Can see tugboats around the carrier.

This was also the last pic taken. Afterwards security personnel entered the room and the reporters were ordered to stop filming.

IMHO the Varyag does not represent the level of technology China is at in the field of naval aviation. It shows that they are capable of producing some of the technologies required on a carrier, but it does not reflect their full work.

The first two indigenous carriers should be the marker of China's level of progress in this field. Until they can design and build the hull themselves, we can't say that the Varyag means that China has entered the "carrier club".

I say it is 70% Chinese, except the hull is not.

Building a carrier from scratch is different than a refit. That's why renovation companies are not referred to as "builders".

Now except the hull isn't indigenous, everything else is indigenous.

Otherwise, China wouldn't start to build its indigenous in JN shipyard if they don't possess this capability.

The hull takes up much of the construction time. If the Chinese can demonstrate they are capable of doing that, then that means their carrier building would have matured to some extent.

China can't build the hull of the aircraft carrier until 2008 when it can produce top notch quality steel that matches its need.
