China's Mars explorer launched

And why would the Chinese want to explore far away Mars at this juncture? They should concentrate on nearer space bodies instead, like the Moon. They are trying to run before they learn to walk. I think the Chinese are flush with too much money to waste on useless missions like the failed one to Mars.

What are they gonna discover on Mars that the dozens of probes sent by the Americans and Russians already have? Are they gonna be looking for Martians? Jeeez!

I think the Chinese have got their priorities all mixed up. This failed Mars mission was probably more of a publicity stunt. What are they planning next? A probe to Proxima Centauri?

didnt the moon have already flood with US probes too? why India still explore it?

tryin to run before learn to walk? i think built a probe and ask others to carry it to another planet isnt that spectacular, but obviously it is a very great achievement by your standard.

@topic Leave it, 50 steps laughing at a 100 steps, *sigh* China dont have its own Deep Space Network, thats why this cooperation happens in the first place.

This mission didn't even receive much coverage from CCTV.

It is only a diplomatic move.

China is mostly focusing on its own Mars mission.

don't buy that garbage!!!

how many times I have heard that lame on everything China tries to reach, even in some succeeded achievements!!!

just like how people yelling on Chinese cars 10 years ago that the Chinese cannot make good cars, but see how today the Chinese cars perform better and better with quality is always being upgraded!

jealous people like that just show how shameless they are!

that tell how your Russian behavior to your Chinese partner, you always think you are the best and superior then them, just exactly what the West views on your "inferior" Russia, yet your whole "East European". If you deserve a respect form others then you must start that first with your sincere intention.

Relax, my analogy to high-school drop outs was refering members of this forum and not Chinese people. Once again some of the people making fun of Russians is like high school drop out making fun of engineers.

stop using the word "stupid" to insult others whom you don't agree with, that make you look more stupider!

When did i ever use that word? Would you like to quote me on that?

this is their 19th mars mission and all failures..this is pathetic. those idiots in charge of chinese space program should be fired for not doing their homework.

Space launches are never 100 percent safe. There is always some risk. Every space faring nation has had its share of failures. Lets' not be overly critical. Russia's space program is still very solid, even though it may not what it was during the USSR days.

Its not a failure yet. They still have 48 hours to correct things up.

Somehow, russian failed to do some important space project in recent year.

I never realize this mission would fail! This is a important part of Chinese mars exploration!

OMFG!! Shitt! I found out that russian Mars exploration had carry out 19 time since 1960, but 6 of them was launch failure, and 3 of them was exposed or orbit failure. 4 of them was malfunction at the midway to Mars. other 6 was failed when they reach Mars. So there was totally 19 of 19 failure in their Mars exploration history......
It was so dumb to cooperate with russian on Mars mission.:argh: I thought it will be all right!

Phobos-Grunt's main engine will be test fired tonight

First attempt to start the propulsion unit of the "Phobos-Grunt" interplanetary probe that had failed to eject onto a Mars-bound trajectory, will commence tonight, reports ITAR-TASS.

A source from rocket&space industry said: "We plan the first attempt to start the propulsion unit of the "Phobos-Grunt" interplanetary probe for 21:16 Moscow time (17:16 UTC)". Specialists say the spacecraft will be situated in a best point of its orbit for a proper boosting burn.

Roscosmos specialists will attempt to save Phobos-Grunt tonight

November 9, 2011, 17:40

Moscow, November 9. INTERFAX.RU - Speciatists of Roscosmos will attempt to eject Phobos-Grunt spacecraft to a Mars-bound trajectory during the night of Wednesday and Thursday's morning, told a source in the rocket&space industry to Interfax AVN.

According to him, at 23:00 Moscow time (19:00 UTC) Phobos-Grunt will pass within visibility range of the primary measurement and command centre in Baikonur. At this time, specialists will collect telemetry information from the spacecraft, that will allow them to determine the exact cause of the issue.

After analyzing the information, measures will be taken to address the problem, if it is found solvable. If possible, manoeuveres to boost into the intermediate orbit and then to escape trajectory will also be performed.

The source highlighted that Phobos-Grunt will appear in range of Russian tracking stations earlier, about 21:30 MSK (17:30 UTC), but only Baikonur station is capable of gathering the full set of telemetry information and, what's most important, to issue the command to perform the manoeuvres.

"Having the issues with the present orbit's height and electric supply of equipment, we have to perform boosting as soon as possible. But undue hurry is not desirable, as well. One error now may cost us the whole mission" - he remarked.
