Dhaka Metro rail: Also a show of local engineering might

I am a bit surprised that you want to send dunces off to university when they do not have the intelligence to benefit from higher education. Anyone below the top 20% is a dunce in my opinion.

As a rough rule of thumb, the top 10% of the population are unable to even begin to comprehend STEM university level subjects such as Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering and Computer Science.

There is absolutely no need for any of them to be at university when the ones just below them can do their A-Levels for 2 years and then start work in the respective fields like professional jobs as accountants and software engineers.

Others even lower down could be learning a trade like plumbing, mechanic, hairdressing etc at either 14 or 16.

We have lowered university standards so much that even not so bright people are getting into medicine - I want to make it that only the top 5% of 18 year olds are allowed to do medicine here in the UK and they would need to score A*A*B as a minimum to get in. If that means the state pays all their tuition fees and also a living grant of 10K a year to attract this calibre so be it.

The other thing is most of the dunces going off to university will never pay their loans back and so it is costing the state vast sums of money to "educate" them. Spend that money on increasing the quality of those doing stem subjects and medicine. That is a far better use of the state's limited resources.

In an increasingly knowledge based economy - it is important to master a subject area.

And to hone critical thinking skills.

If you cannot get 30% to that level you will not reach very high income status.

One step at a time. Expecting BD to design and build the first ever Metro rail by themselves would be ridiculous. Using local raw materials is a great start.
I tell you one thing even though foreign companies build millions of km of metro rails, BD people are inept enough not to be able to build even the next 1 meter of a railway line.

We are just unable to put into place the needed organizations, institutions, or correct technical manpower to do such a thing.

- The British built 2800 km of railway in BD before 1947. How many meters did we build by ourselves? The truth is not even 1 meter.

- The British built the Hardinge steel Truss Bridge in Pakshi over the Padma about 120 years ago, but could we DESIGN and build even a one-span truss bridge?

- Korea built the Jamuna Bridge. But, could we build the Padma or any other similar bridge by ourselves?

So, it is wiser not to imagine wings will suddenly appear to us and we will fly over the sky. It is impossible. Big talking is the only quality we have and this is why BD remains the international basket case always begging others to do even tiny things, let alone bridges or railway lines.

Blame your beloved Zia and his illiterate wife…

For flooding our country with Madrasas!

Is there any surprise that none of our universities rank anywhere?

Before dreaming of building bridges by yourself - get at least one uni up the international ranking!!!

You are a confused soul. We are celebrating small steps - you are the one demanding BD to sprout wings and match Korea today.

You're arguing with yourself!

This is clearly the first time BD firms have even been able to deliver this much of the project. This is positive news and the first step in the right direction.

Not sure why some people are turning this thread into another wailing tear-fest.
Some people are born whiners, you can never satisfy them even if you give your life at their service. If we want the most modern metrorail with the latest technology, then we must need foreign help who are best at that. We can not take risk of buggering off such a massive and crucial project by handing over it to construct to the novices and first timers. Those who are whining that Japanese money and technology were used instead of Bangladesh doing by itself are living in a ganja's paradise.

I am satisfied that, with all the bulk construction materials provided by Bangladeshi companies and also most of the construction workers and mid level engineers are from Bangladesh, most of the spending of this project are absorbed by our local economy and adding to our GDP. It is true, the top officials in this project are Japanese and Japan also providing metro train coaches, but these are not the costliest inputs. Most of the money is spent on giving compensation to land owners, buying bulk construction materials, giving tax to Bangladesh govt. and giving salaries to thousands of Bangladeshi workers and mid-level engineers means that most of money circulated within our economy. This will make repaying back the loan a lot less painful compared to if we had to secure all those construction materials from abroad by spending Foreign reserves.

And we also can be confident that our construction materials are top grade that even the quality- conscious Japanese put trust on them. This will give us confidence to use local materials in all future projects and also help to export to other countries.

And also give confidence to foreigners that our materials are tried and tested.

Which means we can start exporting these materials.

These "experts" crow day and night that BD cannot yet build it's own mega projects like Padma Bridge and Roopur nuclear power plant.

If they thought for even a minute, they would realise that for BD companies to be able to carry these projects out then they need to gain the initial experience by getting involved in these projects in BD first. Only in the last decade has BD been starting enough of these huge projects for BD companies to gain this initial experience.

Now we are seeing BD companies slowly learning how to make some of the "sub-systems" of these mega projects and then eventually over the next 2-3 decades they will be able to design and construct these kinds of infrastructure all by themselves.

BD should aim to get to the level where it can build all its own infrastructure by mid-century.

@UKBengali you are talking nonsense!

Making YouTube clips is much harder.

If only the illegal Indians were sent back - we could launch a mission to Mars!

@UKBengali you are just a Indian shill and your buddy @BananaRepublicUK is a RAW double agent!!!

Hardinge bridge was constructed 120 years ago. I wonder how much was the cost of it.

That bridge is still standing after 120 years ! Fine example of British Raj engineering !
The problem is you can't give the ontract to local folks , if you do how the heck the thives are going to steal $ to take it overseas !

Yes there is a learning process in mega projects.

THE CHINESE SAYING GOES, "THE JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILE STARTS WITH THE FIRST STEP."

Dude, don't take this the wrong way but do you have a learning disability?

BD started from SCRATCH in 1971 and suffered a terrible first decade due to the war of 1971 and that Pakistan had stolen all the money from the central bank and killed as many of the intellectuals as it could get its hands on..

Now you are seeing what an independent BD is capable of as it is the major sub-supplier to the Padma Bridge project.

It will build on this and supply even more materials and expertise to other infrastructure projects over the decade.

In time 2-3 decades from now it will design and build all its own infrastructure but it is some time away at this moment.

Stop being like a 5 year old child who demands instant gratification and step back and think a bit more before typing posts of litte or no value on pdf.

He is the type that came over to U.K. when Britain opened the flood gates to immigration.

My uncle hired many into his restaurant. They went to college and some even graduated.

They read a lot of newspapers and watch online videos.

And have very strong political views - active in politics! Have opened BNP and BAL political chapters in every town/city!!!

But they cannot think for themselves.

And ofcourse, struggle a lot with English!!!

Semi educated Bangladeshis are the worst people on earth!!!

Btw, I find his regurgitation of famous quotes and anecdotes really irritating!

Rote learning at its worst!

Well a 5 yrar old can probably do a decent job learning to make complex objects with Lego over time.
No one wants instant gratification but wants to see people are getting a better return.

Indians have been assembling their fighter jets since the 60's, less than 20 years after independence.
When you have so many projects to float, you are certainly in a better position to negotiate a better deal. Only Japanese Metro deals were favorable.
All the overpriced Ruppur supporting projects went to India.
The Chinese brought their own cement to build Padma bridge.
I would like to see more involvement of local companies for providing materials and services as we don't have enough foreign currency for concurrent mega projects and also to help develop local talents. There is nothing better than hands on training.
