Dr. Medhat Mokhtar head of the National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences said "MisrSat-2" os scheduled to be launched in 2016 to that's specialised for research and development purposes.

He said - to Middle East News Today - that the first phase of work has started on the satellite by an Egyptian team he also stated that about 60 % of its components and programs will depend on Egyptian expertise, noting that it will contain modern technology and precision imaging , and will be able to upload/download large amounts of satellite imagery.

Mokhtar added that the foreign partner would have a restricted role in the review and approval of what has been implemented after the completion of the design stages , pointing out that the development of "MisrSat-2" will coincide with the requirements required for it to be used in several areas which include spatial, demographic, agricultural and industrial research.

This satellite will be used to complement/replace "MisrSat-1".

Egypt will launch 3 satellites in the coming years "MisrSat-2" in 2016, "DesertSat" in 2017, and an unnamed Russian satellite at an unknown date. Although the language used suggests this satellite is strictly for civilian use the reality is that it will primarily serve a military purpose since its the armed forces which will both fund and operate the satellite.

Spy on Israel.

Already happening. This just adds to our capabilities and gives us the technology and expertise required to build our own fully indigenous sat (that's the plan anyway).
