End sale of defence equipment to Pakistan: Think-tank to United States

Council of Foreign Relations is not some no name think tank that is out to make a name for itself because it does not have to, it's well respected within policy and government circles. Their words carry weight.

Larry Pressler anti-Pakistan amendments didn't help him at all, he lost the election anyway.
Would be interesting to see how much Indian money is doing rounds at Council of Foreign Relations.

Ahead of the visit of Pakistan army chief Gen Raheel Sharif, a top US think-tank on Friday asked the Obama Administration to end sale of any defence equipment to the country if it is not willing to "rein in terror". "The US should demand that Pakistan meet its obligations as a state to tackle terrorism emanating from its territory, in both India and Afghanistan," the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), a top American think-tank, said in a report. "If Pakistan is not willing to rein in terror, Washington should be prepared, at minimum, to end US taxpayer funding for defence equipment sales and reimbursement of coalition support funds," CFR said in the report prepared by top American thinkers drawn from various sectors including Alyssa Ayres, Ajay Banga, Nicholas Burns, Ashley Tellis, Charles R Kaye, among others.
Recognising the challenge to US-India relations posed by US policy toward Pakistan, as well as the drag on India's rise presented by the risk of conflict with Pakistan, the Task Force report recommends that India for the sake of its own future pursue an improved relationship with Pakistan. In parallel, the Task Force asked the US to demand that Pakistan tackle terrorism and prepare to cease US funding for defence sales and coalition support funds should Pakistan prove unwilling, said Richard N Hass, CFR president. The US is planning to sell eight new f-16 fighter jets to Pakistan. The new fighter planes will add to Pakistan's sizeable force of fighter jets which include more than 70 F-16s and dozens of French and Chinese attack aircraft.
In its more than 90-page report, the Task Force found that US policy towards Pakistan is one of the main challenges to India-US relationship. Indian officials remain skeptical that the US can ever fully be trusted as a security partner when they see Washington appear to acquiesce to Islamabad's continued inaction on terror groups that have targeted India and the US, the report said.
The CFR report comes days before Gen Sharif's visit to the US during which he is likely to meet top American defence, military and political leadership.

Yes and forget our help when it comes to Afghanistan. USA is stuck with us for really long time.

Yes, Americans have been whining about the sales since 2001, but nothing comes off them.

Hi,

A tragedy has happened in France----a real horrendous act---but also a tragedy to the anti pakistan cause by India---.

So---this report has also met its untimely demise.

The utiity of pakistan is increasing by the minute for the world-----, India can bit-ch and moan as much as they want to---but I think that Gen Shareef's visit just took and upturn of 10 notches in importance.

Pakistan Zindabad---.:pakistan::pakistan::pakistan:

It looks like a pressure tactic by Indian biased lobby just ahead of our army chief's visit. It won't carry much weight. It is a good thing that there are a lot of rational, responsible and pragmatic people in US government. So we don't have to worry about this think tank.

This was a new low for you. It is indeed abominable how you used the tragedy to score a point - even when the corpses are still warm.

You don't need a report by a think tank to see how things are going for Pakistan-US relations. Yes, US is offering Pakistan military equipment, but the choice is very limited these days. PM Sharif came for a summit and he was offered a paltry 8 F-16s? And it was an offer to purchase them, not a gift.

And the problem Pakistan has is not with President Obama, but with US Congress, many of whose members are not keen on Pakistan. They stopped the transfer of Perry-class frigates to Pakistan Navy, and tightened the purse strings on CSF reimbursements.

So I agree US will continue to have a military relationship with Pakistan, just at a lower gear.

LOL the trip will later result in selling or gifting more militarily equipment to Pakistan just like Air Chief visit resulted in 8 F16s:D
That is not the purpose of the visit - the purpose is primarily discussions over Afghanistan, the recent issues between the Afghan government and Pakistan, and the way forward.

F-16's have never been 'gifted' - Pakistan either paid for them or offset the cost from CSF funds already allocated for Pakistan

The drama that you try to create about pakistan----makes you guys look like a total thoughtless fool.

A new low or a massive high---what difference does it make----it has increased the importance of my nation that you are at war with----.

Didn't you guys go crying to the world about the one's dead in mumbai---the one that you guys were involved in helping carried out by not stopping the terrorists even though the information was being given to your country directly almost live broadcast----
