France to help India realise high-speed train dream

Bullet trains in India is still viable for journey for 500-1000km but not suitable for 1500-2000km long journey because in that case people mostly prefer flights. That's why there would be no high speed rail between Mumbai and Delhi.
but not all them can afford to fly.

but not all them can afford to fly.

My point was for travelling to Lucknow-Varanasi to Delhi or Chennai to Bangalore or Ahmedabad to Mumbai people will mostly prefer bullet trains when compared to flights. And our expanding huge middle class can afford that.

Do you think the fare for this train will be same as our present train? It is going to be same as at least low cost flight. No logic in connecting the metros where enough flights are available. Rather connect those points (medium distance)where lot of people travels but sufficent flights are not available. Ex-Chennai-Vijaywada; Kolkata-Asansol etc.

No logic in connecting the metros where enough flights are available.

Imagine a situation where at 200 kms/hour between Chennai and Bangalore you cover the distance in 2 hours in high speed train - Would people prefer flying or taking a high speed train?

I think China is the only country where Maglev trains are running commercially today. Despite the losses which forced other countries to shut down their maglev lines, China is still operating them. I would love to see partnership with China in this area.
The Maglev is not really popular because of the cost and the route length.
It's best for India to work with Alstom because they are faster then Shinkansen when it comes to average speed and running them economically. These days Chinese High speed trains run at speed of 300 km/h because running them faster is not economical.

Exactly who want to fly between Chennai and Bangalore and that route going to be too much popular after looking at the rail traffic traffic between Chennai and Bangalore.

Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro) and Oriental Consultancy with Parsons Brinkhoff India has been selected to prepare the pre-feasibility study on the proposed 664 km long Hyderabad -Vijaywada-Chennai route for running the high speed train.
The consortium will submit the report in seven months. The study is expected to cost the railways about Rs 3.5 crore.
Japan’s high speed trains Shinkansen operate at a speed of up to 300 km per hour and are known for their punctuality, comfort, safety and efficiency. Japan was the first country to build dedicated railway lines for high speed travel.
The six rail corridors that are under study by the Government are the following:

a) Pune- Mumbai- Ahmedabad, completed by Systra, Italferr and RITES.

b) Delhi- Chandigarh – Amritsar, not yet selected

c) Delhi – Agra-Luknow-Varanasi-Patna. Under finalisation by Mott MacDonald (UK)

The move comes after Indian Railway Ministry has decided to set up the National High Speed Rail Authority (NHSRA) that will develop six high speed rail corridors in India by 2020.

Speaking on the sidelines of the International Railway equipment exhibition (IREE) organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) recently, the Carlos Basagoiti, official of market development department, Talgo said, “India is one of the huge market for us and the announcement of high speed rail networks has made us visit India.”

Talgo is eyeing the $7 billion (Rs 33,105-crore) market for supply and maintenance of high-speed trains in India, it is learnt.

The company is already supplying high speed trains that run more than 350 km per hour to countries such as US, Germany, France, Russia and Italy.

Indian Railways has already given the feasibility study contract for three high speed line to Systra, France , which is working on Pune – Mumbai – Ahmedabad 650km line, Mott McDonald, Britain, working on Delhi – Agra – Lucknow – Varanasi – Patna 991km line and Eneco, Spain, who is studying the Kolkata Howrah – Haldia 135km line.

The feasibility study for the other three corridors of Delhi – Amritsar 450km line, Hyderabad – Chennai line, and Chennai – Bangalore – Ernakulum line is yet not decided.

All the six corridors will be developed in public-private partnerships model. According to an estimate, cost of per km line for high speed rail corridor will be about Rs 100 crore, if that is taken as the bench mark, the Pune-Mumbai-Ahmedabad will cost more than $ 15 billion.

I read the news two Days ago that Bangalore-Mysore high speed corridor will be included with Chennai-Bangalore-Coimbatore-Ernakulam-Thiruvanathapuram route.

Trivedi may announce high speed trains in Rail Budget

High speed trains connecting the national capital to Jodhpur and Mumbai could be among the highlights of the Rail Budget 2012-13, which will be announced by Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi next week.

The 591-km-long Delhi-Jaipur-Ajmer-Jodhpur route is slated to be taken up for pre-feasibility study for introducing bullet trains, which run at a speed of 350 km per hour, and an announcement to this effect is likely to be made on March 14.

Trivedi, who appears to be keen on introducing high speed trains in the country, could also announce a proposal for induction of trains sets, which run at 200 km per hour, on the Delhi-Mumbai route.

A train set consists of a high horse power electronic locomotive with about 10 modern coaches and is estimated to cost Rs 200 crore.

Upgrading of signalling and telecommunication system, essential for prevention of accidents in the high speed corridor, is also expected to be announced by Trivedi in his maiden Rail Budget.

Green initiatives are also likely to get a big boost this time as a proposal for manufacturing as many as 2,500 environmental-friendly toilets could be included in the budget.

The budget is likely to feature proposals for improving passenger amenities, including catering service at stations and trains.

Trains can lower the Carbon footprint. Flights cannot. With every international fuel price hike, flight fares will go up. For that reason alone, Trains are a superior mode of transport.

Whatever may be the high speed trains - the compartments need to have huge glass windows and the pantry cars should be serving the traditional chais and samosas and vadas. Maintain the Indianness as this is the charm of the train journeys in India.

although any technological step is welcomed but bullet trains and infrastructure needed for them will
be an costly affair rather than govt shud strengthen the current network and improve it specially maintaining secure and healthy environment . anyways good step:tup:

Not really. Think about it. How many people travel by air in smaller towns? It is emerging but still Railways is 10 times more. A 2,000 Km journey for high speed trains would be an excellent option for reasonably well off people who'd like to travel in comfort.

Its great that a nation of about 60 million assist a nation of 1.2 billion to attain its dreams. That's absolutely incredible.

Well done France for assisting India.
