India announces additional USD 20 mn aid to flood-hit Pak
New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI)

India on Tuesday announced an additional USD 20 million assistance to Pakistan which is grappling with the worst floods in recent history of the region.

The announcement by External Affairs Minister S M Krishna in the Lok Sabha comes in the wake of Pakistan's readiness to accept India's initial aid offer of USD 5 million which is to be routed through the United Nations. "As a more concrete assessment of the damage inflicted by this natural disaster and the urgent needs of the people of Pakistan emerges, Government has decided to increase its assistance to Pakistan from USD 5 million, announced earlier, to USD 25 million," he said in a suo motu statement.

Of the total aid, USD 20 million would be contributed to the 'Pakistan Initial Floods Emergency Response Plan' launched by the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian efforts, he said. The balance USD 5 million would be contributed to the World Food Programme for its relief efforts in Pakistan, Krishna said.

He noted that India had offered USD 5 million aid to Pakistan during his telephonic talks with Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on August 13. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a conversation with Pakistan Premier Yusuf Raza Gilani on August 19, had conveyed that India was ready to do more to assist the neighbouring country which is facing the worst floods in the past 80 years.

Pakistan was reluctant to accept the aid and agreed only after a nudge from the US. However, last week Pakistan conveyed to India to route the aid through the UN.
"We cannot remain unconcerned with this grave humanitarian crisis of enormous magnitude in our immediate neighbourhood," Krishna said. He noted that the recent floods have been described as the worst in that part of the region in the last 80 years.

According to the latest UN figures, 17.2 million people have been affected by the floods which have left 1,600 people dead. More than 1.2 million houses have been damaged or destroyed besides widespread damage to infrastructure, Krishna said. "All the four provinces of Pakistan and ***************** Kashmir have suffered the consequences," he said.

Hope it is getting processed early...a lot of time has been wasted in d first one....the politicians should think about the people first...

It really hurts when people call our genuine humanitarian efforts 'nautanki'. But anyway it is understandable.

After all,

pride
ghairat
honour
izzat
dushmani etc.

are luxuries which the poor and the suffereing can never afford.

Ego is a privilege copyrighted by the rich. The poor and the needy are always left to suffer the honour and ghairat of the rich and the provided.

Dost ye paisa hamare khoon pasine kee gaadhi kamai hai. Ise dariya mein daalne itna asaan nahin hai hamare liye.

Hum bas yahi ummeed karte hain ke ye paisa un tak pahunche jinke liye ise bheja gaya hai.

good confidence building measure..considering the anti-india jehadis are concentrating in northern areas this offer will soften the image of India into more humane rather than an ugly witch with horns. And those chest thumpers, Pakistan has also sent material aid to India after tunsami!

1.Sorry. No matter how much India gives the Terrorists - of course Pakistani "Non-State Actors" will continue their Terrorism

2. India accepted it in good grace and did not ask for it to be "routed" via UN.

3. India is unfortunately one of the world’s largest debtor nations of earth (Really? So the World is on Earth?)

Here is the table from the Indian Reserve bank which claims that Bharat is fifth in external debt. Most analysts know that the claim ( US $ 229.9 billion (22.0 per cent of GDP) paints a rosy picture and the real debt is more than a tirllion Dollars. The debt is also growing exponentially.

Excellent, thank you India. Thank you.

That is what a Poor Nation with 600 Million defecating on the “Roads, Foot Paths etc." has done for its Rich Neighbour. Think how many Poor Indians have sacrificed a chance to use a Proper toilet.

Any case you are A Gentleman and A Scholar. Wish the Pakistani Government had more of your type.

Not sure how good will it be for us..however as one member said Neki kar Driya mein Dal..

It would be better if China waives the loans or write off the debt when external debt is creeping around 54Billion USD.

Right activists are busy asking for a waiver, hope at least Chinese accept it.

1. GoP's stand vis a vis India
2. India's contribution to humanitarian help to PEOPLE (irrespective of nationality) who may perish in large numbers if help does not reach them in time

In my view are two separate things and should be treated as such.. This contribution should be treated as a contribution towards mankind and not towards Pakistan. No strings attached means no strings attached.. Period.

Apologies if this view offends anyone.

I could not have said any better!

Yes indeed - it is for the People of Pakistan.

It's not that simple mate. There's one very important string attached to this money. It should reach the people it is intended for.

If, god forbid, it is found that this money is stacking up the wads in the closets of the Zardari's, The Sharif's or the generals...Well...that will be the last nail in the coffin of Pakistan's international image.

To my Pakistani friends, remember, use it well. Any other thing required, we'll be happy to oblige. After all, when some tragedy befalls a family, it's the duty of the eldest son to come to the aid of the family.

To my Indian friends, let's have a big heart. If we want to be recognised as a global power, we must be willing to bear the responsibilities as well, be it Haiti, Africa or Pakistan.

Mera Bharat Mahan,

Jai Hind!

So another 20 Million down the drain, the only thing we get in return is some thankless idiots rants.

Not sure how good will it be for us..however as one member said Neki kar Driya mein Dal..

India should help flood affected people in Pakistan, not because doing so will help India's image, or that we can afford to help, or for any other reasons.

The only reason we should help is because it is the right thing to do, simple as that.

Some people in Pakistan will appreciate India's help some won't, but that shouldn't be a reason for not helping out the victims.

India and Pakistan are neighbors and no amount of hatred or vitriol can change that fact. If we don't help Pakistan in this moment of need I would be ashamed of being an Indian.

Let's not let false egos and comments of ignorant few get in the way of providing help!!!
