Basmati export floor price may be lowered to counter Pakistan move

India will lower the basmati floor price to $850 a metric ton, down from $1,200 a ton, to help millers and traders ship out the rice grade, said the sources, who didn't wish to be identified as they are not authorised to talk to media. Last month, India fixed the floor price, or the minimum export price (MEP), for basmati rice shipments at $1,200 a metric ton.

Suraj Agarwal, chief executive of RiceVilla, a rice marketing and exporting company, said: “Current MEP of $1,200 per tonne (Rs 100/kg) is comparatively higher than the average export price of $950 tonne (`80/kg). The new crop of basmati, which is known as 1509 variety, has started to arrive and if we don't book export orders at this point, our only competitor in basmati rice — Pakistan, who has set its MEP at around $1,050 — would improve their share in the global markets.

Excellent move. India can afford to squeeze Pakistan economically.

You Indians are idiots to say the least, you've been fighting Pakistan militarily but the best fight you could afford is financial or buying some military generals.

Indian government looks out for its farmers unlike your country leaders.

Keeping your generals to bleed your awaam is in our interest. We don't have to buy them. They are corrupt and they don't have the jazba to fight a conventional war. They use proxies like Ajmal Kasab to do jihad. They are expendable.

Indian military might is the reason your major budget is diverted towards buying weapons. You want to keep parity, please don't stop now.

The Indians are so full of themselves.

Indians reducing floor price, good for them.

There is ample demand of basmati rice in the world.

Yes that's exactly why the farmers were protesting in India because the government looks after them much better than pakistan. Duhhhh

It was a stupidity driven by politics. It was to lessen the government burden and phase out subsidies and make it market driven price control. Farmers can make more money if price increases instead of minimum price guarantee fixed by government. In the long run doing away with subsidies will help grow our economy.

They were protesting because they have become very dependent on government subsidies and they feel let down if they are removed. That is the reality. It is same with reservations and quota system. Once implemented it is hard to remove them even if the objectives are met.

But what you've said is true. Our generals have ripped Pakistan to bankruptcy and international isolation. This army is worth what they've earned and produced in 70 years. If you'd try to harm my country, know that entire Pakistan is standing in its defence but if you let these soldiers ruin this country then rest assured, they have and they will continue to do that.

All the wars were started by your country and have nothing to show. You lost half your country in the process. We have our priorities straight. To grow our economy. We don't worry about Pakistan. You guys are just irritant in our progress.

I agree, Pakistan is robbed by its pseudo defenders.

They've harmed Pakistan on the equal scale as India would harm Pakistan. Pakistan Army is the best thing that happened to Pakistan from Indian point of view.

Burdened by debt and unable to eke out a living, many farmers in India turn to suicide

The country where 30 farmers die each day
