India: Basmati export floor price may be lowered to counter Pakistan move

Market tricks are all India has as it cannot compete in taste and originality.

Really? 1 farmer sent a floating request to BHU. 1. One.
TRICKS . You cannot trick Asians into choosing a inferior rice. We pay premium Indian price because Indian Basmati is superior in EVERY way .
You cannot "trick" people into paying more especially Indians Pakistanis Sri Lankans etc. We all are very astute regarding price and yet we pay more for better quality of Indian Basmati. There is nothing in Pakistan to compare with

Lower the price as much you like. The Indian rice just doesn't taste as good
It really does not!

Good initiative by Canadian government. Indian government helps by exempting tax on income from sale of farm produce. Out of every rupee earned by farmers, 21 paisa is subsidized. Farm subsidies form about 2% of India’s GDP. High amount of farm subsidies, farm loan waivers put excessive burden on Government finances reducing space for capital expenditure.
Indian numbers cannot be trusted. India has a deep and long history of lying about and faking numbers. This trend is deeply enshrined into their psyche.

Yet, we are growing 6 to 7% a year. All our growth engines are at full throttle.

Rather than reducing the price, if India and Pakistan cooperate with each other, India can buy all the export stock that is available in the Pakistan market and sell it at $1200. It would have been win win for both of us.

India and Pakistan don't even have the ability to work even for mutual benefit. There have been times when there is tomato/onion glut in one country and shortage in another and vice versa stll they cant work together on such a thing. 2022 was tomato glut in India with farmers literally destroying their crop and severe shortage in Pakistan and this year was the opposite with India having severe shortage Even the most hardcore enemies often find common sense but not India - Pakistan.
South Asian mentality is that of gossiping aunties, and it reflects in diplomacy too. That is why British were able to take over so easily.

Do you want to open trade with India? The last I know on this - we stopped trade because of India annexing jammu. Are you saying we should reverse it?

happy to burst your bubble. What you've been buying as Pak rice is just the Indian rice relabelled by your fav Pak trader.
Indian wholesalers sell their lower quality stock to Pak shops at a discount

Both countries should allow trade of raw materials and agricultural products.

Basmati export floor price may be lowered to counter Pakistan move

India will lower the basmati floor price to $850 a metric ton, down from $1,200 a ton, to help millers and traders ship out the rice grade, said the sources, who didn't wish to be identified as they are not authorised to talk to media. Last month, India fixed the floor price, or the minimum export price (MEP), for basmati rice shipments at $1,200 a metric ton.

Suraj Agarwal, chief executive of RiceVilla, a rice marketing and exporting company, said: “Current MEP of $1,200 per tonne (Rs 100/kg) is comparatively higher than the average export price of $950 tonne (`80/kg). The new crop of basmati, which is known as 1509 variety, has started to arrive and if we don't book export orders at this point, our only competitor in basmati rice — Pakistan, who has set its MEP at around $1,050 — would improve their share in the global markets.

Sounds like a race to the bottom. If both countries could stop beating their chests at each other and along with other countries form the Basmati Rice International Cartel, (BRIC 😉 ) they could probably sell the stuff for $3000 per ton, pay the farmers better and everyone makes a living

(Even better maybe some of the farmers could then afford to explore new ways of making their tiny 3 acre family plot actually work - like verticle farming, rather than have to exist on a crop that needs hand planting and replanting, careful flooding and large inputs of fertilizer and pesticides.)

But instead each country is heroically undercutting the other in a lemmings-like leap to poverty. As in "I would rather starve than have you thrive along with me". And some erstwhile intelligent people on this forum are cheering this thinking on!🙄

People don't consider nutritional aspects when it comes to rice. Only taste. For nutrition they look to other things.
The hybrid Pakistanische product offers best of both worlds.

If it is cheaper branded as so-called Pakistani-er then every Pakistanis know that it is not real. Genuine cost real money. Pakistan market cannot sell genuine at loss.
