India offers electricity at Rs15 per unit

I found some alarming news for myself and for others to look at:

Thar-Coal project to produce cheap electricity: Dr Samar

ISLAMABAD: Renowned scientist Dr Samar Mumbarkmand on Saturday said the country had third biggest coal reserves which could be utilized for producing cheap electricity.

Talking to Pakistan Television, he said that scientists were working on the Thar-Coal project to meet the growing demand of the electricity in the country. The estimated cost of the project is $115 million, he said.

The Thar-Coal project will yield 100 Mega Watt (MW) electricity, he added

He said that 40 per cent electricity in the world is generated through coal.

Dr.Samar Mumbarakmand said besides producing of cheaper electricity, 100 million barrel diesel and gas could be produced through Thar-coal which would be sufficient for 30 years.

Thar-coal field has enough reserves for 500 years, he said.

He said that foreign countries had shown keen interest in the project.

He hoped that after the success of the project, foreign companies would come forward for investing in this sector.

Dr.Samar said that the massive support of government was available to continue the project.

He said that gasifires have been introduced which are being effective and result-oriented.
It is the government’s top priority to improve the energy sector, he said. Dr.Samar said that there is a serious need to focus on utilizing coal which is available in the biggest quantity.

He said that investors can be obtained 20 per cent profit after investing their money in this sector.

The scientist said: “It is a cost effective project which must be implemented in letter and spirit for overcoming the energy crisis in the country.”

He said that the project will start producing gas by August this year. He added that the project will also yield cheap diesel.

“We will try to use the Thar water for irrigation purpose, and for this, we are working on it,” he said.

wtf man why india is buying coal mines in indonesia, afghan, africa and aus when we have this huge mine right at oour door. :cheesy:

just let india in 1 bn $ funds will be transferred within a day.

Realistically transferring losses will be enormous if electricity has to be transmitted from china .. It may be upto even 80% losses approx ... Wagah Attari is more realistic and would be win win situation for both India-Pak , It would act as a CBM too ... In future If pak manages to have surplus I am sure India having deficit , i see no harm in India buying Electricity if it helps citizens accross the borders !!!
Very long distance transmission is HIGH VOLTAGE DC transmission with no or very little loss. It's the infrastructure and wiring over that long distance would be mostly

This guy is a bit weird. In one source he is saying it can produce 200 MW for 700 years
and in the other he saying it can produce 100 MW for 500 years
.
Sometimes scientist do weird things to attract funds. BTW 200MW is not enough. I bet your capitals full scale requirement would be more than that. 700 years :D cuz many scientist think that coal and oil reserves will be empty in 200/250 years at the rate of current consumption

Pakistan has decided in-principle to import power from India: Pakistan power minister - Economic Times

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan government has decided in-principle to import up to 500 MW electricity from India, with the World Bank agreeing to fund the construction of infrastructure needed for trade in energy between the two countries.

Water and Power Minister Syed Naveed Qamar said Pakistan has made an "in-principle" decision to import electricity from India to meet its growing energy requirements.

He made the remarks during a meeting yesterday with a delegation from the Indian firm Global Energy that was led by Harry Dhaul, who is the Founder and Director General of the Independent Power Producers Association of India (IPPAI).

Pakistan is facing difficulties due to the shortage of electricity and the "early import of power from India will help in bridging the demand-supply gap", Qamar said.

The country may initially import up to 500 MW from India, he said.

"It is our desire that modalities, tariffs and terms and conditions for the import of power be finalised at the earliest, so that the project may be started shortly," Qamar said. Trade in electricity will enhance economic ties and bilateral relations, he added.

During the meeting, it was agreed that Pakistan and India will build a 45-km 220 kilovolt transmission line within six months following the signing of a formal agreement.

The agreement will be valid for five years, after which it can be extended for another five years or more.

Qamar has directed the Power Ministry, National Transmission and Despatch System and Central Power Purchase Agency to finalise terms and conditions and to submit an initial report to him by next week.

In a related development, the World Bank has agreed to fund the infrastructure needed for trade in electricity between India and Pakistan, a senior unnamed official of the Power Ministry told The News daily. The official said the World Bank had expressed its desire to fund the infrastructure during a recent meeting with top Pakistani officials.

So it's the private player's trying to sell their share electricity to Pakistan which they are entitled to sell in an Open Market.
