India, Russia sign pact for Smerch rockets

New Delhi: India and Russia have tied up for a joint venture to manufacture Smerch rockets.

A memorandum of understanding for starting the joint venture was signed between India's Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) and Russia's Rosoboronexport and Splav SPA here on Monday, the Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.

The technology for the five versions of Smerch rockets will come from Russia.

"OFB signed a MoU for a joint venture with Rosoboronexport and Splav SPA to manufacture five versions of Smerch Rockets based on the technology received from Russia," a ministry statement said.

Smerch rockets are a hi-tech weapon system with a range of 70-80 km.

"The MoU, duly approved by Defence Minister AK Antony, has been signed by three parties in New Delhi," it said.

After indigenising the technology of Smerch rockets, OFB will attain new heights in manufacturing of the advanced rocket system, it added.

Russia is India's largest defence partner with over 70 percent of Indian armed forces equipment coming from that country.

The two nations already have a successful joint venture in the design, development and manufacture of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

They have also tied up for the joint design and development of the fifth generation fighter aircraft and the medium transport aircraft.

will it be the new Tornado Version or the old BM-30 ??

Why are we stil buyng this when we have the Pinaka ??

Is it about Smerch rockets production only (9M55K, 9M55K1, 9M55K4, 9M55K5, 9M55F, 9M55C, 9M528) only or entire system production and development...

Will it include 9A52-4 Tornado (Russians are replacing BM-30 Smerch with 9A52-4 Tornado), so whyn't push for this?

Because PINAKA is unguided. SMERCH can work as tactical ballestic missile.

But when we are developing PINAKA-2(120 km guided) than what we will do with SMERCH????:what::what::what::what::wh

We design technology for supersonic cruise missiles. How the eff is it difficult to make a guidance system for Pinaka and extending its range?

Why the hell is DRDO still hell bent on importing like this?

No one became a power by importing weapons and eating national wealth..

These shyteheads are doing the same nonsense over and over again.

We know how to make an MBRL.. we know how to design a ballistic missile and even bloody send a rocket to the moon. But still we have to freaking import MBRLs for some dirty ministers' bottomless stomachs.

Cruise missile tech is differ from MBRL. PINAKA is too small for fitting the guidance s/s. + this will increase its cost. So IA is happy with PINAKA.

BUT now we need to choose b/w SMERCH & PINAKA-2, due to this decision.

IA also complain to Russia due to defects in those s/s.
(In response we get TOT hahahaha........).

Dear, they are the articles is about ToT.. means drdo will get experience with those 80km+ rocket and even use it in our pinaka..

But they should go for limited number of smerch, if our pinaka-2 project is successful then leave smerch and go for pinaka.. will help in maintaining cost...

On August 27, 2012 in New Delhi, India’s Ministry of Defence-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for creating a Joint Venture (JV) with Russia’s Rosoboronexport State Corp and Splav SPA, also of Russia, to jointly-manufacture five versions of rockets meant for use by the 42 Smerch-M MBRLs now in service with the Indian Army. The OFB’s Ambajhari-based military-industrial facility will undertake final assembly of the rockets. The fuzing mechanisms and sub-munitions will be supplied off-the-shelf by Splav SPA, with the remaining components of the rockets being produced from locally-produced raw materials, based on ToT from Splav SPA. To me, such JVs will neither make India self-reliant in the production of rockets for Smerch-M, nor will it enable either the OFB or DRDO to acquire the know-how necessary for indigenously developing new-generation long-range MBRLs. The money instead should have been better spent on either conducting R & D for an indigenous 120km-range substitute of the Smerch-M, or on the ARDE’s on-going project for developing the 60km-range Pinaka Mk2 rocket (the Pinaka Mk1 has a 37.5km-range). For those interested, below are details of the five types of rockets to be built by the OFB for the Smerch-M MBRL.

My friend, I know the mechanisms and roles of both MBRLs and cruise missiles.

My point is that when we are capable of designing and developing strategic weapons that have a deterrence factor, why the hell are we importing MBRLs which are nothing but advanced artillery?

In fact, we have even made our own MBRL of short range.. why can't DRDO or L&T simply extend its range?
