» India tests submarine-launched ballistic missile - Thaindian News

New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS) India Tuesday test-fired an indigenously developed nuclear-capable submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) from an undersea location off the Orissa coast, an official source said. “The missile was launched around 1 p.m.,” the source said of the sixth test of the 700-km range Sagarika missile.
Since the Indian Navy does not have a submarine capable of firing an SLBM, the test firing was conducted from an underwater launcher positioned 50 metres under the surface of the sea and 8 km off the Orissa coast.

Prahlada, chief controller of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) that developed Sagarika, said earlier this month it was also readying for a “crucial” test of the missile from a submarine.

“We have asked the navy for a submarine to enable us conduct the test,” Prahlada - who uses one name - told reporters during the DEFEXPO international defence exposition here Feb 16-19.

However, this could be a while away as Russia is yet to respond to the Indian Navy’s request for loaning an Akula-class submarine that is capable of launching SLBMs. The navy’s Russian-made Kilo-class submarines and the German-designed HDW submarines do not have the capability to fire such missiles.

The success achieved last year with exo-atmospheric (outside the atmosphere) and endo-atmospheric (within the atmosphere) anti-ballistic missiles, as also with the surface-to-air Akash missile, had apparently encouraged DRDO scientists to test the Sagarika again.

Powered by a turbojet, the missile can carry a 500-kg payload. It is 8.5 metres long and about a metre in diameter.

Very Huge Feat achieved by DRDO and enabling India to fulfill its third and last Nucler tried. :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

Thats a good success.

So India might have developed a Nuc ballistic sub by 2009.

That means they will have this thing operational by 2009 or 10.

Pakistan should also look forward to develop nuc sub:coffee:

It is highely unlikely that this SLBM get operational by 2009 or 10 since it success completely depends upon ATV as well as Scorpeans. ATV sheduled to prowl within the water by this year end or earlier next year, by time ATV complete its test in the water it would take another couple of years for the integration of Sagrika. So my guess till 2011-12, we can complete operational submarine with SLBM.

Indian Public sector Defence companies are no good. Apart from ISRO,i really dont have faith in others.

DRDO recruits the worst engineers.

They should outsource work to Tata,l&t .DRDO software engineers dont know anything.

we have wasted 10 years in this sagarika project.Public sector has doomed india.
we should have imported like pakistan did M9/M11 missiles and created many versions (shaheen, ghauri).

And we have taken 25 years to develop agni.

We are yet to prove With ARJUN Tank. But i dont rely on DRDO scientists until they outsource work to indian private companies.

this is a nice achievement for india. does pakistan have any plans for slbm? i know that we have plans for slcm, but we can use the same concept of launching from tubes for ballistic missiles.

Beta, DRDO is premier defence organisation in India and one of top defence sector unit all over the world, when it was first coneived during 70s the project there were no creadiable private sector companies capable to handle any big ticket. DRDO has saved our countries on many occassion from becoming hostage to foriegn country for import of weapon system. Had not DRDO then we could not developed stretegic ballastic missile like Agni. It was only after the liberlisation of Indian economy, private sector emerged with great pomp and noise.

They should outsource work to Tata,l&t.

It was only after the liberlisation of Indian economy that this TATA and L&T establise themseleves in the market, since before liberlisation there were no private sector giant which were capable to handle the defence projects which was handlled by DRDO.

DRDO software engineers dont know anything.

This are the similar software engineers which enables india to pioneer several critical defence technology which only developed countries can dream off.

we have wasted 10 years in this sagarika project.

Have any other private sector giant in India have ability? or history of developing long range ballastic missiles? other then DRDO.

Public sector has doomed india.

Yes, but it has teach us very hard lesson to fulfill our amibition of becoming self-reliant.

we should have imported like pakistan did M9/M11 missiles and created many versions (shaheen, ghauri).

But India has taken the oath of becoming super power of 21st centuary and to realise this amibition, one has to self-reliant. Infact there was no need of importing missiles from others since we had converted our space launch vechile into the missiles.

And we have taken 25 years to develop agni.

absolutely false, first Agni missile inducted somewhere around 1999-2000.

Project was first envisage during 1983 in form of IGDMP from scrath and at very shoe-string budget. Show me a single countries which has excel ballastic missile projects in lowest possible time.

We are yet to prove With ARJUN Tank.

Arjun has already proved itself in a previous test, but our army is overshadowed by Russian influence and hence they are poised to go for T-90 even when these T-90 are riddled with severe problem.

But i dont rely on DRDO scientists until they outsource work to indian private companies.

Outsourcing of work has been going from last five years, several private sector companies have been included in several defence projects. Regarding your comment about DRDO scientist which has made us pround on several occassion and gather golbal accolade for India.

Indian missile test to spur arms race in region: Afzal Tahir

Updated at: 1200 PST, Wednesday, February 27, 2008
KARACHI: Pakistan Navy Chief, Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir has said that the Indian seabed missile test would spark a new arms race in the region.

Following the inaugural ceremony of a utility ship at the Karachi Shipyard here, Admiral Afzal Tahir in a chat with the media said that the Indian seabed missile test would trigger arms race in the region and added, “It is sensitive issue and Pakistan has an eye on it.”

He said that Pakistan was a key-ally in the war against terrorism, but its mandate was limited. The Naval Chief said that Pakistan would not become an ally in the Iran war, as Iran was a neighboring country, with whom, we have strong cultural ties.

Its being soo long since after the improvement of the relations between the two nations, we heard a statement like this from our side. This means that this test indeed disrupts the balance of power in the region.

We might be seeing a response to it in a few months time as rumour was still there about a possible version of Babur to fired from underwater. Coming months will be interesting.

Was thisthe development that might give Pakistan the excuse to deploy theSubmarine launched cruise missile. We have to wait and see. Any bets as to the timescale.

Pakistani defence projects are much to secrecy and not much is known about them. However the immediate response from the pakistani Naval chief says it all, we might be seeing a naval version of Babur pretty soon.

First, Congrads!
