India unveils 'world's largest healthcare programme'

Towards a healthy India
India announced a national healthcare scheme for half a billion of its poorest citizens in a major giveaway to voters in the final budget before a general election.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said India's most vulnerable families would be able to access up to Rs 500,000 a year for hospital cover through the initiative.

Flagship protection shceme
India spends a little over one percent of its GDP on public healthcare -- one of the lowest proportions in the world -- a sum the government is aiming to increase to 2.5 percent by 2025.

"We are now launching a flagship national health protection scheme to cover 10 crore poor and vulnerable families. This is approximately 50 crore beneficiaries, by providing them up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation," Jaitley said.

Taking the pulse of rural India
The government currently provides Rs 30,000 towards healthcare for poor families, but that sum is insufficient to cover most medical procedures.

Terming the scheme as the world's largest government funded healthcare programme, Jaitley said it would take healthcare protection to a new aspirational level.

Right move
Jaitley said "adequate funds" would be provided to roll out the insurance program to 500 million of India's poorest nationwide. For tuberculosis patents, which claims more lives in the rural areas, Rs 600 crore will be allocated for the nutritional support of the patients.

Other initiatives
24 new government medical colleges and hospitals will be set up by upgrading district hospitals in the country which will ensure one medical college for three parliamentary constituencies, Jaitley announced.

Hope it works for the Indians. Asia as a whole needs this type of initiative
the problem is to make these benefits reach the poorest, that is where many schemes have failed but this govt has a good track record of giving ppl the benefits directly so that keeps the hope alive.....so we are pretty confident that ppl will be able to use it.

Its a gimmick, fake as 3 dollar bill:

Apart from 15:00 listen...

Good.It is actually doable .
But problem is whether our illiterate folks would be able to secure this scheme .

yes, not many are aware of their rights and facilities that are risk coverage schemes that are available to us. For ex, how many of us know that IRCTC provides accidental insurance upto 1,00,000 for just Rs. 1 when you book a ticket through their website?

Tamil Nadu has an efficient health plan since 2004. Now Hindi gov will force TN to abandon the proven program and follow this. That is stupid.

Also, together with this will come Hindi. All these places will have Hindi. Doctors will be required to write prescription in Hindi in addition to English. Doctors will et letters in Hindi.

Aadhar linked Jan Dhan accounts will help in plugging loopholes which were present earlier, I hope babus don't mess up the implementation of the scheme.

It must and will bee linked to Aadhar.
I doubt Jan Dhan would come into picture as the process will make use of Aadhar and GST to track the payments.

So, in practise there won't be any reimbursement to patients but a direct payment to hospitals, which will then will be tracked by Aadhar linkage.

Which health plan is that? Kindly share please.
We all are desperate to know about this excellent plan the TN poor are availing :D

Not at all excited about this.

Government was better off strengthening & streamlining public hospital & primary healthcare infrastructure while increasing the number of doctor/nursing schools rather than incentivizing corporate greed in healthcare. Massive Health Insurance programs like Medicaid were instrumental in driving up the healthcare costs in US.

The only obvious beneficiaries would be the private insurance companies who will shaft the government by siphoning off vast amount of funds on one hand and fcuking the patients by driving up the costs on the other end.
