New Delhi, Feb 16: Former
army chief retd. Gen V K Singh
has said that the Indian army
"will never carry out a coup, it
will only defend the nation".
Replying to questions from Rajat
Sharma in India TV's show Aap
Ki Adalat, the former general
blamed some bureaucrats and
some army officers for planting,
what he called, wrong
information in the media about
the movement of two units of the
Army near Delhi.
"Today, I can reveal that some
bureaucrats and some army
officers had planted this baseless
news. These two units were part
of routine mobilization, and if
you remember, there were some
developments in Maldives 6-7
days later, these units were
meant to go there", said the
former COAS.
Asked what could be the motive
behind planting such news, the
retired general said, "it's very
clear. A man (Gen Singh) stands
up against the government, and
you want to defame him. You
want to coerce him. That could
be the only motive".
The former COAS also alleged
that a former Principal Secretary
to the Prime Minister was given
a plot by the owners in the Tatra
truck scam, and the son of a
senior Planning Commission
appointee stayed in their guest
house for one and a half years.

Indian army will never carry out coup, ex-Army chief Gen V K Singh tells Aap Ki Adalat

Its both good and bad news.

Army is meant to defend the country but at the same time, the army must also keep the politicians on their toes and force them towards good governance.

The Indian politicians have fear of anyone and behave as if they own the country. Some aggressive partial interference by the army will keep the politicians in check.

He said lot of interesting thing about pakistan also.

sorry the full video not available yet.

In our country Region is preferred over Religion. And then we have a huge diversity. It will be very difficult to convince a Bengali soldier to revolt against a Civilian govt for a Marathi Army chief.

Are you really that stupid??? Ever read our constitution? Ever heard of divide o power`???

None of our achievements would have been possible without the stable democracy we have. The army does its job in defending the country from any outside threat and will just STFU in any internal or political affair.

No thanks sir, no need for any such intervention. We as a democracy need intervention of only one kind, that is people's mandate.

It's good news for us, even Indian politicians are war mongers, if a military dictator ever comes to Delhi, we will surely see nuclear war happen.

I think India needs a spell of martial law to throw our bloody corrupt politicians into the dungeon. They could borrow the SOP from the Pakistan Army as they are past masters in coups! :P

Army will never encroach upon political power, unless it sees that the union is in trouble. That is not a likely scenario, but a possibility exists. If regionalism gets out of hand, then this same Army will be called upon to intervene.

I am afraid Indian politicions arent war mongers . I dont think Musharraf was an Indian politicion or was he ???

1) Indian politicos are not war mongers. Quite the opposite, actually. Often the army has wanted to go to war, or begged to do cross border strikes, but been denied permission by the GoI. One notable instance was the 2002 kaluckac massacre, when LeT militants from across the border attacked and brutally massacred people in a tourist bus, mostly families of Indian soldiers. The army was outraged and begged permission to raid and strike training camps across the border, but were declined. The massacres of 24 Kashmiri pundits in 2003 (again by the self proclaimed liberators of kashmiris) was another incident. After the chittisingpura massacre of Kashmiri Sikhs, Sikh groups lobbied the GoI to retaliate, but the GoI declined. GoI has been anything but warmongerers. If Indian politicians are warmongers, there will be war. Pure and simple. Because the army will have no choice to act on their instructions and go to war, just as they have no choice but to NOT go to war, as the govt orders.

2) Don't worry about the possibility of a military dictator in delhi. This is India you are talking about, where the military is, and has been subservient to civilians in all its recorded history. (The only exception being some 320 years before Christ, when the only military coup ever in India took place.) There is a bigger possibility of a military dictator assuming power in mars, than in India.

Is shiv sena not a political branch of hindu army of india?

col. prohit was a humble worker.

As they say, "Naa nau man tael hoga, naa radha naachegi". :enjoy:

Army will never come into power. For us Army has to be for security, not governance. If something bad happens, we blame govt. AND Security agencies.

India doesn't have a hindu army, and shiv sena is a regional (maharashtrian) political party like many others. It is not the political branch of any fictitious army. So many mistakes in such a small post - very commendable.

Just because your religion keeps forming armies every now and then (lashkar-e-this and lashkar-e-that), doesn't mean that other people behave the same way. Be at ease in your mind, because there is no hindu army, no lashkar-e-Hinduism.
