I dont know why South Indians are not proud of being Hindu. I mean they are Hindus like us, but they do not like to be proud about it like us North Indians have been. You can see this by the fact that most of bjp votes come from north india.

You have no idea.

while development and all is fine and it is clear that no one markets himself better than modi and consequently, majority in cities/internet is tilting towards Modi (More so because of a corrupt and inefficient current govt and an increasing wave of nationalism, where we say it is OK to have a specific identity - hinduwadi etc)... However, go back to 1930s Germany and read the history... You will find a shocking similarity to what had happened - People were sick of low development, useless politics, and were developing a sense that it is OK to push for a single race identity! How that went is a well known fact.

My countrymen won't like it. But, we got to be careful with this guy! India is of Indians and NOT of Hindus or Muslims and my fear is, if we stop that homogenous trait of our country under him.

Edit: I don't think there is anyone taller or better administrator than him... But, still!

I dont mean it in an insulting way sir. Why do they not vote for bjp then? South Indians are very language-centric people I have noticed. They pride themselves mroe in their language/ethnicity, and dont like to wear their Hindu faith proudly...

They don't vote much for BJP because of lack of candidates. Local parties rule the roost.
I am more North Indian than other North Indians btw :D

Define Hindutva. :azn:

Hmm I see. Why has BJP then failed to penetrate South India then? Why do they not get proper Hindu candidates south indians can vote for according to you?

I think we should fight extremism with passion, and give no quarter.

But if you want to fight the enemy by becoming a replica, you've lost the battle. Allow more Hindu fundamentalism and - politics being what it is- the respected and erudite Hindu scholars will not become our national leaders. No, you'll see the rise of religious trash (like in Pakistan), third rate local sadhus who have no leadership to offer. Some of them are trying to ban Valentine's Day in the guise of culture. Next they will tell you your women cannot wear jeans or trousers. Then, women should not work. Etc, etc.

And my experiences in the West suggest that they are getting more cautious, more prone to suspicion, but not more fundamentalist, extremist or jingoist than they were before. There is a huge difference.

You are mistakenly transposing Characteristics of Islam to Eastern religions. Hinduism is neither restrictive, nor does it have expansionist political aims. However, it needs strengthening r as a bulwark against hostile religions.

Why do you think India is still majority Hindu, while most of the other nations fell before Islam? It is not as if the Indians in older times were nationalist or secular.....these concepts were rather unknown in those days. It was Hindus old and deeply internalized religion which prevented Islamic takeover.

Secularism is no match for religion which is an innate need of humans. For most people, the choice is not between religion and no religion - but between competing religions. Naturally Hindus would like to preserve their own ancient faith. Similarly, nationalism works against opposing political entities but is ineffective against creeping attacks through religion.

What I see here is a logical fear against what Hindu nationalism would bring along with it. But what also one can witness is Hinduism has evolved and will keep evolving and adopting. The bigger danger in the room is that of Islamic fanatics not the danger of a band of people running around closing down greeting card shops selling valentine's cards (there is some logic in there too - as in trying to stop invasion from foreign culture).

That is EXACTLY what my fear is, my friend.. when we start saying this is not good because it is foreign... India is so diverse only because we assimilate heterogenity in a very homogenous society (check how how India was formed, how Ashoka ruled multi linguistic and multi religious country)... Right wing politics of ANY kind is destructive!

Today, we will say india is a Hindu Rashtra, tomorrow, Shaiviks and Vaishnavs will start to fight for supremacy as well... We can't mix religion with nation and nationalism!

Define Hindutva. :azn:

Really don't want to give you a smart answer that I can... The Hindutva that some (well meaning) people define is NOT what our politicians infer that to be! and, yes, I know Ram rajya means peace for all... but, i promise you, VHPs and Bajrang dal kind of nut jobs will also want their shariah to be implemented...

We can have an endless debate on that topic, but I am not fighting it from 'if Hindutva is bad or good view'... I am simply saying, in a democracy, that we took together from Britishers, there is NO place for religion supremancy and you will acknowledge that these are two different things - Hindutwa and hindurashtra!

With all (actually I have none) due respect to Pakistanis, you views on our political leaders matter less than a random fish in the aartic ocean. You would be the last country whose opinion we would take regarding our political parties. So pakistanis like op need to get a life and stay away from our country's affairs.

Thank you for coming on a Pakistani forum and explaining to us your point of view. That is actually said with all due respect for being coherent and to the point.

You are right in a way.

South Indians are not "protective" about Hinduism in the same way that Hindus in UP / Bihar/ MP are. This is a bit paradoxical because the Public face of Hinduism was almost extinguished in the North while in the South, many temple remained preserved. Maybe, South India was not involved in a death struggle with Islam the way North was.

you said what's in my mind..
Islamic fundamentalism is the biggest threat and today Hindu extremists are no where near them..but Hindu extremism is a bigger potential threat India could face only because of the sheer number of Hindus in India...I see it as what China and Pakistan is for India..

Islamic extremism is what Pakistan is for India..it's the biggest trouble maker and enemy of the nation..we had constant fights and a bloody history..

China is like Hindu fundamentalism..it's relatively peaceful..no big troubles..but if it ever becomes a threat it's too big for us to handle..it's the biggest potential enemy..

so no matter what Islamic fundamentalism can be defeated because India is largely Hindu..but if the now peaceful Hindu population is moulded into extremists then there is nothing which can stop it.

Even if it is so, it's far far less dangerous than what's brewing in the name of Islamic fundamentalism and fanaticism. The war that the world is facing is due to religion - not due to socialism or nationalism, and the counter to that fanaticism will come from religious nationalism.
